I don't think she needs to be this idealized all-american girl next door. I like when she has some edge, and has some trouble adapting to Earth and American customs.

More or less the typical take on her. Only have her be Supergirl when she's a teenager. Then she takes a hiatus from the hero stuff to go to college and when she comes back, she decides to do her own thing rather than just look like the girl version of Superman and steps out of his shadow and becomes Powergirl.

Obviously we can have nuance, the problem is whenever modern writers try to examine the tragic aspects of Kara's character they almost always go full tilt in the other direction. It's not impossible to write a version of Kara where she's able to maintain her hopeful Pollyanna-type demeanor AND acknowledges the weight of the tradegies she's endured, it's just difficult. So writers just give up and instantly default to rewriting Kara's character (often to the point of unrecognizablilty) so that it's easier for them to address the full scope of her trauma. It's lazy.

Conner works because he's gotten years and decades of development and context. Cir-El was just a few stories that didn't last long. And some of those only got written because someone had a fetish of putting three teenage girls in spandex into puppy piles constantly.

What's fun about characters like Supergirl is that they're vague and non-integral enough that you can sort of just reimagine and reinterpret them however you'd like. It's a strength in this instance, as you can bounce from the DCAU's teeny bopper to the CW's Clark Kent (Female) to the Gunnverse's strung out party girl without it ever feeling unnatural or unwanted.

I see her “nihilist” phase as part of her origin story. Like with Spider-Man being driven by anger initially after Uncle Ben’s death, until finding greater purpose by becoming a hero. I also find it interesting when her trauma manifests as anger issues like in New 52 and MAWS. It makes her feel like a real person, whereas “classic” supergirl just feels like I’m watching Bo Peep where every episode is indistinguishable and inconsequential from each other. I guess it just depends on your taste really, and what you want out of comics
