Is Curt Swan really the best Superman artist, all things considered?

I have a special fondness for the Byrne era because it's when I started reading.

Probably depends on who you grew up with. A lot of really old Superman fans still cling to Wayne Boring. Younger fans prefer one of the recent artists.
Curt Swan, particularly when inked by Murphy Anderson, but also when inked by George Klein or Ray Burnley, turned out great stuff for a long time.

Byrne's one of my favorites due to nostalgia but some of the anatomy is straight up Rob Liefeld level.

I've been reading through Bronze Age Superman and while Swan is still good he does feel a bit antiquated by the 70s, the first Garcia-Lopez story I got to felt like a jolt.

Really glad it's finally be properly collected. for as much as people rag on marvel 90s DC was really good

I managed to pick up a good chunk of floppies from that era through various swaps and stores but it's far from complete. Really wish I was more of a DC reader back then but I was riding the marvel hype train.

The best part about collecting Superman is that they printed hundreds of thousands of them and nobody wants them since 90s kids don't care about Superman so you could easily compile a pretty good collection just scouring 50 cent and dollar bins at your LCS. y.

You mean Jamal Campbell? Haven't read his stuff but I don't like when comic art tries to look like 3D models. They're not going to beat computers at their own game so they shouldn't even try. Comic art should be more spare and elemental.

Yeah, there were a few books I had to pay A LITTLE more for but on the whole I got a lot of these for a song. Honestly there's zero reason any comic from this era should ever go for more than a few bucks.
>>
>>152366635
Off the top of my head I think the only triangle era comics that go for a little more are the first post-crisis Flash race issue, the first handful of Doomsday appearances, and the first Bloodsport. But even then I don't think any of them go for more than say, 20 bucks. There are a few issues of Superman Adventures that go for a little bit.

I always liked Perez’s Superman. To me it had all the elements I liked in other Superman art without any of the elements I didn’t like.

McGuinness continues to be one of the most unsung comic talents of the last 30 odd years. How one man could have fingers in so many pies and still fail to be a household name is beyond me. It's nothing short of tragic.

Honestly if I knew how and why things get popular I'd be a far richer man. A lot of people deserve more credit then they get when more famous ones do far less and get it.
>>
>>152367037
He's just one of many 90's talents who deserved greater recognition aswell. I cant help but day dream about all I'd have him do if I had the money to burn. I really hope alot of former DC talent makes an attempt to do something of note with the DC trinity when they lapse in a decade. Just imagine a creator owned series with material from McGuinness, Bogdanov, or even Chris Sprouse. A man can dream....

Yeah, Emperor Joker is that bizarre kind of edgy you can really only get away with in direct to video. Though that said I'm shocked they didn't make a lot of stories. You'd think Kingdom Come would be a huge pull but I guess doing that in proper Ross style would be more expensive than they'd like. More batman Superman arcs would have been fun though

>>
>>152367396
BATB attempted an adaption of it but Superman was cut out from the picture altogether. It really only borrows the idea of Joker getting 5th dimensional powers, everything else is original.
>Though that said I'm shocked they didn't make a lot of stories.
The sad truth is it's too late now. Most stories adapted past 2015 end up horribly butchered. Gotham by Gaslight, Superman Red Son, etc. It's almost impossible to imagine a Kingdom Come adaption as a result. The best we have to go off is TDKR.

It doesn't help that the TomorrowVerse movies have what must honestly be the blandest style I've see. There were aspects of Man of Tomorrow I did like and I'd say it's probably the best of the lot but it just feels so dull a lot of the time. And the other movies are even worse. the animation and direction just lack OOMF and their filmed in the most simple way possible. X-men 97 kind of has a similar issue where it almost feels like a flash (the animation not the scarlet speedster) movie

It's hard not to mope in light of these developments but I cant shake the feeling that DC is out to commit total brand suicide even now. You'd have to go back to 2018 to find a DC release (comic, cartoon, or otherwise) with anykind of fanfare behind it. It's been a steady decline in quality ever since.

Steve Rude draws a nice, clean Supes, very reminiscent in his style to a less - let's say, art deco or fifties inspired design aesthetic than the late Darwyn Cooke. And I wouldn't mind a prestige limited series drawn by Rude for 3-4 issues, but I'm fine with his variant covers and don't need more or consider him amongst my top three/five or anything like that.
