Hello! I am Jason Yungbluth, cartoonist and creator of Weapon Brown, Clarissa, Deep Fried and many cartoons for MAD magazine. (Proof: https://www.whatisdeepfried.com/2026/02/03/proof/)

My Discord admin, who is twice as smart as Rain Man and 3X as autistic, has told me that since the likes of Todd McFarlane will never show up in /co/ I can celebritymax my stats just by running an AMA here!

So, um... fire away!

I don't believe the charges. He should not allow the media jackals to hound him out of office!
>>
>>152364176
Do you read anything current? What are you into?
By the way, you should give your admin a bonk to the forehead for making a thread this early. It's a bit early compared to prime time

My boy said I would gt a good crowd here! (Also: I am banned from most major forums for being too fukkin' real!)

FOX BOOBS

SO HOW MANY SEXY ANTHROS DO YOU DRAW? (either commissioned or as a hobby)
>>
Isn't there a way to verify your identity to get around these captchas? I thought I did this once...

As many as are purchased! ORDER NOW!!
>>

Hey man, I support you, and I purchased Weapon Brown like 10 years ago.

I just saw Iron Lung last night, you think you wanna make an indie movie or an Indie Cartoon sometime? I would sit through a Weapon brown movie.

Also Popeye is up for grabs, go make a Popeye.

lol no, you have to do these captchas every few times unless you watch to suck up money for a 4chan pass!
>>

Just came to me one day in high school, and later a story started to assemble itself. I was always a fan of the animated Peanuts specials, so I guess it was inevitable.

technically you're not supposed to advertise here, but if an anon brings it up organically (i decided to click around your website) i guess you might be able to hype it slightly?

Well then... I invite everyone to poke around my website and perhaps find the sale. Poke it right in the belly and make it giggle! I will not curse Jesus if someone links it on their own as long as it doesn't get this thread removed.

Almost certainly! But since it was a commission for Bob Iger, they want to keep it hushed up.

What made you want to do this, promoting something new? Did Epstein send you (How sure are you your Discord admin isn't Epstein)? Also what's your fav Mad Magazine work, not necessarily something you did but in general?

You should have done this like 10-15 years ago when Clarissastocks were high

How long did it take for you to get good at drawing? Any tips for aspiring artists?
>>

>>

How long does it take from start to finish to make such a piece? What are the steps involved?
>>
>>152364080
thanks for doing this AMA by the way!
>>
I appreciate you coming here just for an AMA and not coming here to drunkenly defend cheating in your wife with transgirl porn stars like a certain Image comic writer did some years back.

What would you say is the work you're the most proud of? Or one you wish people would talk about more?
>>
i've seen people complaining about back pain or arm pain from drawing. do you get the same?
>>
>>152364080
Any plans for an animated Clarissa adaptation?
>>
>>152364481
This probably took 12 hours, all told. I start with a thumbnail sketch, then print it out and work over it, then transfer that sketch to the final paper by having a printer reproduce the sketch in blue line, then tight pencils, ink and finally, half a bottle of whiskey.
>>
>>152364080
Favorite cartoon?
Favorite comic book artist or illustrator?
>>
>>152364553
I'm proably most proud of Deep Fried, my least loved project! I have been trying to kill it off for years with a storyline called The Hero's Journey that just keeps going on and on!

Clarissa Ruins Thanksgiving, Stuffed Friend and Family Portrait are comics where I really think I exceeded myself, and I love the way the Weapon Brown graphic novel turned out.
>>
>>152364592
Bill Sienkiewicz, John Byrne, Frank Miller, Barry Windsor-Smith And Frank Quitely are my biggest influences. Favorite cartoon? Animated, I'd say right now it is a toss-up between Adventure Time and Primal.
>>
>>152364557
From time to time, but it all has to do with posture.

>>
>>152364080
what was the job interview/application process like when you first applied to mad magazine?
>>

Actually, I just bombed every editor with my work all at once by mail and as it happened they were launching a new feature that my work was well-suited for.

(Come on, man! I counted those spikes right!)

do you prefer this captcha, previous captchas, or those google captchas where you have to find traffic lights and cars?

What was with the Achewood and Sluggy Freelance cameos in Weapon Brown? Why the webcomic references in a story drawing from newspaper comic strips?
>>
>>152364080
>clarissa
How does it feel knowing that this board worships clarissas dad as a hero?
>>
>>152365399
I mostly stuck with print-newspaper strips, but I think the references you cit were in Aftershock, where I expanded the cameos to include web strips. Webs strips may very well be the future, baby! But still, I think newsprint is poised for a comeback!

>>152365506
Let's hear it from the horse's mouth. What exactly does lobsterhands mean?

I had a livid discussion with an anon about it after the other thread. I maintain the position that it means a stiff, pincer like grip with zero emotion and he was adamant it meant that Clarissa had tried to yank it off at some point or at least harm dad.

2 questions

Do you like any cartoons? Have you watched any recent animated shows like the owl house or hazbin hotel or smiling friends?
>>
>>152365637
It's more like I haven't arrived at the correct ending. However, I only just recently realized that one thing that has been holding me back is a story about Clarissa's mother. The ending, I'm sure, lies beyond that.
>>
BTW, since I am showing off ALL my work today, if there are any Star Trek fans in attendance maybe you will want to read my FIRST EVER FAN FIC!

>>
As someone who knows you only for Clarissa, I'd like to ask what was the inspiration behind it (if any)? The whole juxtaposition of a very dark topic with dark humor sprinkled makes it morbidly enjoyable to read through, but also hard to recommend it to anyone.
>>
>>152364080
What materials do you use for penciling and inking, and what paper do you prefer to draw on?
>>
>>152365997
The immediate inspiration was a TV movie called "Something About Amelia". I remember watching it and thin king "It's going to be an awkward Thanksgiving at their house this year!"
>>
>>152364080
Did Clarrisa's dad ever go to the Island?
>>
>>152366053
Higgins black ink, crowquil pen, Staedtler pigmaliners (.03), Copic markers, Strathmore 500 series Bristol (smooth).
>>
Who is the best girl in Weapon Brown?

>>152366089

I use blue colerase too.I have local printer run off my blue-line sketches from PS documents on paper I provide him.

For likenesses: I would recommend the book The Mad Art of Caricature for lessons on how to see faces correctly. Bottom line: Always pay attention to the spatial relationships between each part of the face. Ignore what you "know" about how the features ought to look. See them as abstract shapes. Try drawing from your reference upside down! It is a good way to distance yourself from your existing habits.

Any plans to put the first Weapon Brown graphic novel back in print again? I loved reading comic strips in collections and the paper as a kid, so I've always been a huge fan of the idea; I would love to own it in print but I missed out on the print runs before. Might have to nab Aftershock before that goes OOP too.
Thank you for your time Jason, /co/ is more of a hellhole than it used to be (at least on the cartoon side) and I commend you for stopping by

Love your art! And your stories are interesting. But your writing is a mixed bag: sometimes exciting, impactful and funny, sometimes it just loses all steam. I think it's due to poor pacing? Generally, I think you're much stronger at shorter stories than long format ongoing stuff.
>>
In the early 00s I got a stack of mad magazines from the 70s and 80s from my grandmother and a few Al Jaffee compilation books. Haven't read the modern stuff but it was definitely formative for me
>>
>>152365891

I mean, /co/'s one of the more 'stable' boards, I suppose. And we do legitimately appreciate when people who've actually 'made it' shoot the shit. Fuck it, I'll bite.

If there was a major IP you could choose to do the next 'big thing' with (big graphic novel, run that shapes a character's public perception, character redesign, etc.) what would it be? Doesn't have to be cape stuff, could be design lead for a big cartoon series, etc.
