I like how this encapsulates the problem with PD in that a lot of people who use PD characters would already be able to do what they do under parody. Not to say PD is bad more that most people are very uncreative with it.

This kind of reminds me of a conversation I had involving Disney, and specifically their "princesses" while Disney owns the rights to Disney stuff they technically don't own the right to old tales they used. Like Alice in wonderland, snow white, little mermaid, various other grimm fairy tales.
>>
>>152365815
Well yeah, most people know that (or at least they SHOULD know), the problem is that due to their popularity they often become the 'definitive' version for a lot of people. Which isn't inherently Disney's fault it's just that a lot of people are scared of trying to compete with them in the same way a lot of studios didn't want to compete with Jurrassic Park and make their own dinosaur movies after it became a huge hit. (There was a plan to make an adaptation of the Topp's Dinosaur Attacks! cards a la Mars Attacks! but the creators didn't think it would live up to audience expectations).

Show me a creative use of PD characters, then.

Generally? We still get some decent Sherlock Holmes, Lovecraft and Conan the Barbarian stuff. In the case of the former there is plenty that does a straight continuation to more outlandish interpretations. In terms of /co/ media there's a Rocketeer comic where he teams up with Popeye and Tintin, which even if it's not amazing is at least attempting to tell a story and not just do an extended Family Guy/Robot Chicken skit which is what a lot of people seem to want to do.

This looks incredible but it's not even out yet. Most of the ETAs on its Kickstarter are circa 2022.

Pitch the inevitable Betty Boop horror movie.

Lmao
I played a demo at MAG, 4 years doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount of time on an indie game but I have no clue how much is left.

She’s a succubus, it’ll be better than the 4 Popeye horror films by default.

That's a shame, I liked Mars Attacks! and dinosaurs with that same vibe would have been fun. Wouldn't beat JP in sheer $ made, but they'd have my few bucks.

Very odd pairing, but I'll always give credit to Wormwood for being a right wing culture warrior that can actually tell jokes.

Yes, also a correction to what I said, it was actually shelved when JP was announced and the writers felt that competing with Spielberg was a lost cause, they did consider reworking it as a parody afterwards but ultimately canned it. Shame because it could have been a great movie especially if they kept the whole Saurian Satan angle. Still, the point stands in that people get cold feet when a movie threatens to overshadow everything… or they do The Asylum route and make a cheap knockoff to cash in. You know now I think about it it is bizarre how on the one hand Hollywood can be desperate to compete (see all the multiverse/shared universe projects that sprouted and died to compete with the MCU) but at the same time can’t seem to bring themselves to make something based on a subject that is PD - like say pirates in the wake of the success of PotC series. I suppose it really does come back to the idea of completely owning an idea that drives them.

People who think about public domain in terms of "using characters" are all extremely retarded. Public domain means you can freely distribute works, it doesn't affect trademarks. If you just want to copy a character from somebody else's work, you can do that already.

This kind of humor you should be able to laugh at regardless of your politics. Or conversely, I don't think humor that only serves to validate and reassure your current opinions is very funny (like Stonetoss). These were both good punchlines I didn't expect.
