The only baffling religion is atheism, because statistics on suicides and requiring psychological aid can tell us which one only causes misery for its followers

Eh, in story God is egotistical and abandons His heavenly duties to live on Earth (despite the story hammering us with Earth being filled with awful crazy shit) and initially MC wants to tell God that He should ensure that things people believe in matter
Dunno how it went because I dropped it at some point (Saint Killer's backstory issue?). Maybe I also skipped parts of story

Men's lives being so unfair and harsh really shouldn't have been set up by a god that truly loved his creations, but it is, nobody else is willing to step up to the plate, therefore a real man does so because they alone can handle it. How's that so difficult to understand?

That's like saying parents should allow their kids to do whatever the fuck they want with zero reprimands EVER

When people call some belief a "religion" it typically means either an organized religion, like an institution or church. Or it might be a "lifestyle" if it's a deeply motivating factor in your habits. It's all semantics. You can call any set of behaviors a "religion" if you want to use it as a slur.

I wonder what a rightwing Christian man like John Wayne would think if he ever saw his persona being used in such a way. It's like using Charlton Heston's picture for an anti-guns flyer.

The ENTIRE point of the comic is that this attitude is fucking terrible, and constantly fucks Jesse over. Every problem he has in the comic is because he tries to act stoic and macho and it's retarded every time.

Not really. It's pretty firmly established that Jesse's masculinity is something he should be proud of. The only problem that Ennis seems to have with Jesse's bravado is that he doesn't believe Tulip can handle herself. And even then she berates him for a page a few minutes later they're back together after he sheds a tear. It is Cassidy's "charming roguish Irishman" personality that Ennis REALLY has an issue with.

The problem with people like Ennis is that they're not questioning or opposing the existence of the divine (specifically a creator deity) out of any sense of rationality or logic, but because they're either too self-centered, have hangups towards their parents over MUH RELIGIOUS TRAUMA (or their parents being jerks in general), or have average IQ.
A curious person who struggles with finding an answer to the question of "why does God allow bad things to happen" will find what they're looking for in either Buddhism or Gnostic Christianity. But the average atheist is NOT curious: his lack of interest towards the world and people around him inevitably results in him becoming bitter, alienated, and resentful, enough to the point of declaring "God's not real" as a coping mechanism, when all it does is expose how lacking he is in vitality and conviction. To be atheist is to display to the world how ignorant and stupid you are.
>>
>>
>>152372053
It's better than Atheism, anon. Instead of being stupid enough to go "WAAHHH I HATE YOU GOD" and not be able to make sense of how the Bible wasn't created as a singular narrative, you can go "I hate the Demiurge"
>>
>>152371980
>>152372080
Most people who describe themselves as "atheists" actually mean that they specifically do not believe in the Abrahamic deity, which is a fair position to hold. Their beliefs past this are too broad to generalize; you have your paganistic spiritualists, your pseudo-shintoists, the "I have a vague sense that things happen for reasons" almost-Buddhists, moral relativists, Darwinists, etc. It's not really fair to slight them for semantic reasons, because "atheist" is the easiest way for them to communicate: "I think that going to church is bullshit," which is generally the point of conversations that would bring it up in the first place. They're technically agnostic. The only real atheists, by the literal definition of the term, are nihilists and nihilistic Determinists, and they are a very rare breed.
>>
>>152371980
It's funny, people are probably more atheist than ever before, even with growing religious return to Christianity movements. God or the supernatural just is increasingly not a factor in people's lives in a legitimate way. And yet even people who are effectively atheist would find the pre-2010's approach to western atheism really cringy and embarassing in that it's largely just, as
>>152372192
said, obsessively anti-Abrahamic. These days, if a person doesn't believe in any sort of deity actively, they simply just don't concern yourself with caring, for the most part. Ennis atheists are obsessed with disliking organized religion, Christianity in particular.
>>
>>152371980
Your arguments against atheism come off as projection and you can easily be accused of the same lack of curiosity, hangups, and coping mechanisms.
>>152372080
Atheism is not a hatred of God or a demiurge, it's a lack of conviction.
It would be silly to hate something that doesn't exist.

I agree with you that God is an abusive sadist, but we have to make a distinction between the God of Judaism (OT) vs the God of Christianity (NT). The atheist takeaway of YHWH as a monstrous tyrant comes from contemporary perspectives on the characterization of God within the Bible narrative as if it were a singular and designed as such from go.
The "reason" why God is a huge asshole in the OT/Torah is because the current Bible we have today is in fact a Frankenstein's monster of various stories and tradition from the Middle East over a thousand years ago. When it comes to YHWH specifically, he's not just one God, but the amalgamation of the Canaanite pantheon when the shift to Monotheism occurred. YHWH assimilated El, Baal, Asherah, and the rest of the gods that the Canaanites and Phoenicians worshipped. On top of that, by the time the Torah was being formally compiled together from a handful of independent sources, it had already been around six hundred years of straight YHWH worship. Nevermind how the Jews pulled from different cultures and their religious practices (Egypt, Greece, etc).
God is not a crappy asshole within the context of the NT because this is not the same God as the one found in the OT. Early Christianity was extremely Gnostic, and they all made a point of distinguishing that there were two Gods: the abusive jackass who rules over the material world vs the one who rules in Heaven/the Pleroma. One is selfish and moronic, the other is all-loving and kind. One traps souls, the other frees them.
Even if you don't subscribe to Gnostic Christianity, Gnostic ideas are not only entertained by Orthodox or Catholic theology, but also by Jewish perspectives (an angel made the universe). Corinthians 2 even suggests that Satan is the god of this world.

It is already answered in Christianity. God wants us to demonstrate that we can outrank the angels and sit on thrones alongside His

Ever heard of Life Eternal?
Let me mathematically explain it to you
X / INFINITY = 0 for any X that is a natural number
And Christianity has the simplest way of getting good life eternal. Regret your sins and believe in Christ, no need of any karma purification ritual or other outweighting deeds

It's like the spirit of Elvis in True Romance.

Going to take this thread as an opportunity to blog post. I'm depressed by how bad my memory is as it pertains to media. I hate my life, so I use escapism to obtain joy. I read Preacher as a teenager (maybe 16 or 17), I am now 26 and I can barely remember anything about it. I remember the MC's power, his vampire on again, off again friend, who at some point betrays him, the military guy and, Assface. I remember there was some arc where the MC was a sheriff in a small town after he got his eye injury and, the military guy almost getting raped in a crawlspace by rednecks, but past that I remember next to nothing despite reading this entire comic. This disturbs me deeply, its not just Preacher, but most everything I've read and watched past 3 or so years in the past. Is this due to speedreading and not taking the time to try and remember the details? Am I simply retarded for caring at all?
