Let us read every TMNT comic ever made. This is going to be a long one.

Really I don’t get why #1-4 were the mega-hit they were.
The Marvel comics of the time they were parodying had blood and violence, and there were enough out-there sci-fi comics slowly clogging up the LCS. Though TMNT brought out a lot more.

>>153162216
Sweet! Reading Usagi made me want to read the original Mirage turtles.
>>
This is the reading order I am using, btw. I guess Multiversity no longer exists.

I find the whole April has always been black narrative funny because here she is introduced with a black man (who is later White in adaptations) and is clearly not black.

Having the right timing is everything.

It’s an (internet) pop-culture line. People don’t care enough to check it and it just sinks into the culture war swamp.

That's all well and good, however

I remember this speech from the 2003 series and it wasnt until recently I found out it was lifted directly from the comics.
>>
>>153162272
Reading up on it, it seems like a lot of people wanted more manga type comics, the name itself grabs attention on the comic racks, and the low print runs meant sheer word of mouth was the main marketing method and when you have more spirited fans recommending it, it gains enough attention of Mark Freedman who then got them a toy deal that is really what started it all. Kinda weird looking up his name doesn't turn up much but it seems like he is a very key-figure but even he didn't know it. There is some footage of him talking to Eastman and Laird, saying in three years this toyline would be gone and that was the expected life of this IP and that was what he was offering them through working with them. Though I'm not a Turtle guy, I just looked a bit of this up.

Thanks OP!
>>
>>153162216
I guess it's fitting to have this next to the Usagi Yojimbo storytime, but oh boy is it going to be a challenge to keep up with both simultaneously.

Triceratons are so fucking cool looking.
>>
>>153163711
Man, if those are still around they must cost a fortune.
Luckily Brother Vinni makes resin knockoffs
>>
>>153162275
Purple dragons this early? Wow, never knew they were OG enemies, no wonder they're shoved into basically every TMNT adaptation.
>>
>>153162278
Oh hey, the TMNT movie referenced this exact page.
>>

>Ow_the_edge.png
>>
>>153162323
There's something about the way Splinter drawn here that's very...off-putting. Like he's drawn in a more realistic way than the turtles.
>>
>>153162329
I will never get over this Splinter origin being the original canon version. Not only is it such a goofy, cartoonish element to an otherwise gritty comic, but it's also the origin adapted into basically every version of TMNT thay goes for a more serious tone.

The more lighthearted adaptations stick to the "human turning into a rat through mutagen" explanation, which is significantly more reasonable than Splinter being the predecessor to Ratatouille. It's such a strange situation all around, though I'm not gonna lie and say I don't appreciate the irony of it all.
>>
>>153162336
Oroku Nagi? Huh, I wonder why his name was changed to Saki in adaptations.
>>
>>153162309
hilariously small manhole cover
i bet their shells woudnt fit
>>
>>153165135
>>153162351
Ah, Saki was the brother. So I guess adaptations merged the two characters into one as a way to smooth out the story, then.
>>
>>153162365
Lmao, this whole backstory is goofy as hell.
>>
>>153162386
It's interesting how this version of Splinter explicitly raised them as killing machines for the sake of revenge. Every other version is the exact opposite, where their martial arts was taught out of giving the Turtles a means of self-defense, and mostly to AVOID the Foot.
>>
>>153162393
...delivering a message to challenge the Shredder? You guys are assassins, what the hell. Just kill him in his sleep or while he's occupied, like how Shredder did to Yoshi.

>>
>>153162458
>>153162463

>>
>>153162488

>It seems the Shredder...has been shredded!
https://youtu.be/7uW47jWLMiY?si=kCJlVpl8J9bo_8uM

Also it's really funny how that actually gets referenced in the later seasons of the 2003 series' intro.
>>
>>153165280
Wait, that's what happened?! I thought he just fell to his death. So they didn't even kill them like they were trained to, he was hoist by his own petard like a Disney villain.
>>
>>153165295
Yeah. In panel three, the gernade is falling with him, and that white splash in panel four is the explosion. Later, they'll talk about him being blown up, and I had to go back to check.
>>
>>153162570
Oh wow, I was not expecting Mousers in just the second issue. In every other version the Mousers are treated as an "oh SHIT" moment, and are always a tier above the usual goons they fight.

>>
>>153162792
That first panel is gorgeous.
>>
>>153162817
Man, what a strange issue. You think issue 1 would set the tone for a grittier sort of TMNT, but issue 2 feels even sillier than the 80s cartoon at points. Reading the issues back to back is such intense tonal whiplash.
>>
>>153162800
Kevin and Peter were inspired by Frank Miller who in turn was inspired by Kazuo Koike who had a school and his top students include: Tetsuo Hara, Hideyuki Kikuchi, Yuri Horii, Keisuke Itagaki, Takayuki Yamaguchi, and a certain lass by the name of Rumiko Takahashi

I'm not your boss (and you're looking at over two weeks' worth of storytime so it'll be a bit of a wait), but I think you probably would have gotten better uptake if you had started this afterwards. Now I don't know, it'll be weird to just jump in with the Triceraton arc.

>>
>>153169703
Every time the mirage turtles show up in crossovers they're treated with a level of serious and gravitas that simply did not exist outside of the first issue and the build up to Northhaven

The reality is the series had more in common with the cartoons than they'd like to admit
>>
>>153165109
The cartoon version is way more direct
>Shredder hates Hamato Yoshi and turns him into a rat
in the comics
>two Japanese guys like the same woman
>the bad Japanese guy attacks the woman so the other one kills him
>then the bad Japanese guy's brother kills him
>then his pet rat sees this and gets revenge on the killer
I guess if they were going for the endless cycle or revenge it would make sense but for a first issue it's a lot of back story.

I wouldn't really say less hammy(pretty much the only version of Baxter Stockman I can think of who isn't at least a bit of an egotistical ham is the Mutant Mayhem version) but Mirage Baxter is definitely a bit half-baked compared to later versions, though excusable considering how early in the franchise we are and how he was essentially a one shot character here
>>
>>153163238
I feel dumb for not noticing this until now, but it's really funny that the Turtle with anger issues has a name that to Wrath. Raph's entire existence is based on a PUN.
