Its been a while since i read Invincible. It didn't hook me before, and didn"t this time either.
The show is better if only because it feels like a fully realized idea rather than a 3rd or 4th draft like these issues are.

Give them a reason for drama to happen, and make it rare enough to have impact.
This is something I think these sorts of modern shows and comics miss.
You need levity and low points to make the high points feel more impactful.

The Invincible comics sort of towed the line between doing the light-hearted domestic superhero thing Ironically and Sincerely. And that's what I really loved about them.
It wasn't afraid to just have funny storylines and issues (at first)

Maybe if the show was a full 26 episode 22 minute apiece season like in ye olden days, they could swing that easily, but nope. We've got eight episodes every year or two if we're lucky, so if any scene stops the plot and characters from moving for even a moment, it's a much larger disappointment. (which isn't an issue with the audiences, but the showrunners)

The show seems intent on trying to rewrite the series as if it was planned out from the start.
In this scene, it's just a joke that gets turned into a minor plot hole later. In the show, it's now an intense internal struggle now that Nolan knows that he's going to have to choose between his heritage and his new home soon. It's everything he's potentially built up for the past 20 years finally coming to fruition, and he's subconsciously scared for it.

The show has a serious bad habit of just removing comedy entirely for the sake of what they think is a better story. Powerplex was the biggest example from last season. He showed up a few times as just a joke that Mark awkwardly just walks away from without a second thought. Yes, even as the guy gets his family, and then himself killed. It's that kind of bleak dark humor that set it apart from the standard Marvel comics.

Invincible is pretty mid. Compared to something like martial law and miracleman it's not nearly as ambitious but it's readable at least.
