If the whole show was as edgy as the pilot it wouldn't have been allowed to air. They had to tone it town to make it more reddit/tumblr/bsky friendly to allow it to succeed. But adding excess optimism and wacky randomness just turns it a comfort show for snowflakes at the expense of REAL comedy and REAL adult themes that made the pilot really exceptional.

Just be glad the show only had enough time on the air to get only partially RickandMortyified before creators saw the writing on the wall and pulled the plug.

Their announcement said it isn't the end of their collaboration. So I predict they'll pitch a "Not Smiling Friends" show that does a slightly different brand of comedy but with constant callbacks and nods to their abandoned golden goose (or jokes intentionally drawing attention to the fact this is NOT Smiling Friends). So what was the point of this character? The pilot built him up as some kind of eccentric weirdo and major character but then after essentially an entire season of nothing they just turned him into another straight man. A Allan Adventure feels like it could've starred Charlie instead and nothing would have changed.
