Has anyone installed home security systems in their houses? what do you recommend and do you regret it?
>inb4 gun
I come from a country where firearms are illegal unless you are a farmer. I am a bit unsure about the cheap camera's which connect to your phone (additionally I am a bit of a snob and would rather spend good money on something which lasts) any recommendations would be great I am open minded. Definitely prefer hard-wired electrical devices, could have it installed by my electrician relative so installation price is not an issue.

unless you live in fucking caracas, joburg or the south side of chicago all of your home security shit is pretty much a meme and unnecessary. CCTV is always a good idea though.

You want Reolink cameras, all the other brands suck (Ubiquiti is an OK alternative if you already have their network products. I recommend buying an NVR (Reolink makes them) if you're a techlet or just setting up frigate if you are a /g/tentooman.
Whatever you do, don't buy other brands and for the love of god don't use cloud storage.

currently shopping as well, I've settled on a reolink POE camera kit. I'm not super paranoid so I'm only doing like 3 cameras, just need to figure out how to install them on the soffits as it's a 2-story house. I don't like the idea of getting up there with a ladder but it seems that's my only option.

install hidden cams that look UP near front door, so you can give local cops a FACE pic, not pic of top of some punks Hoodie.
have them pointed cumming and going from front door.
chances are local cops will know their real and dozen "street names"
IMO important part is cam with WWW connection that can't be easily ripped out, so some battery backup over cell phone.
motion activated CCTV and upload to cloud over cell phone connection, using spare cell phone and data plan.

amerimutt here what country prohibits firearm ownership outside of farmers??? as per home security you need to be more specific. what is the most likely threat you are going to be facing? are you trying to make a castle or are you simply trying to put one layer between you and neerdoweller numero five hundo from stealing your amazon goodies?

OP here.

I will have a look at your suggestions now, thanks.

Trestle and planks is the safest option, you can usually hire them from construction equipment hire shops for quite cheap and for only a day

honestly very smart idea I will seriously consider this.

I am from Australia, I mean people in Gun clubs can have them also but it is a lot of paperwork. The main thing I would be dealing with in my city is a lot of youth crime
>kids under 18 break into house
>steal car
>take car on joyride and set it alight.
Additionally it is just nice to be cautious, I am a carpenter so my doors already have some nice hardware and deadbolts but if people really want to get in they will. If someone were to get in I just don't want them to get away with the crime so I will definitely invest in some CCTV (non-cloud) I don't want a castle, but I don't want just ONE layer. The only layers I can think of are:
>gun
>CCTV
>dog
>??
I definitely don't live in Joburg/Chicago/Sao Paulo

Clever, I might have to look into this.
Regarding the possibility of a camera getting ripped out: I don't know if other brands have this feature but I use

battery cams which have an anti-theft alarm so they'll start making a very loud and obnoxious noise if they are moved from their position. I know it works because I forget to disable the fucking thing every time I take them down to recharge them.

Home Security is a necessity from where I'm from, do I regret it? No, neighbors usually comes and asks footage from me if there's an incident that happens that's in range of my cameras.
>what do you recommend
It really depends on your house, just go with any CCTV as long as it has it's own DVR, can't say whether you should go for an analog or networked ones, it'll all depend on how you'll be setting it up.
I'm already using bullet type cameras, wanted to experiment using a cheap PTZ camera I found at a flea market, it says it a lenovo brand but looking through it is actually from another chink brand Jooan, currently struggling to flash a different firmware onto it as the PTZ doesn't respond to any of DVR I use, even tried using ODM but to no avail, and no I ain't installing that chink Cam720 shit

Ausfail, fairly easy/simple to get a firearms license. You are definitely not allowed to store the firearm loaded inside your house, especially if you live in suburbia. Firearm stays locked in one cabinet, ammo stays locked in another cabinet until you head to the sporting range. Firearms are not to be discharged in city/suburban limits outside of firing ranges. Rural/semi rural farmers etc are allowed to use them on their properties for pest control etc.

Can't say I've done it, but it doesn't seem like rocket science. Most home security systems these days configure themselves and run on WiFi.
A lot of people air tag their car and get a Google door cam, kind of cursed, big brother tech, but people do it because it works.
Putting remote opening devices and key locks on sheds and external gates is easy, putting bars or security screens on doors and windows isn't particularly hard. Motion sensing lights are a no brainer.
Then you've got soverign systems which run if there's no power or internet, battery powered cameras, lights. Wired cameras that can't really be hacked.

Installed one of these POE systems a couple weeks ago, love it compared to our old basic wifi cameras. Came with more than enough ethernet to run all 6 cameras and could be installed in a single day as long as you don't fall off your ladder.
Also recommend getting these screw in wire clips to run the CAT6 and toolless Ethernet connectors so you can cut off the excess wires.

Only problem with these DVR systems is a lot of them don't have WiFi built in and you need to use one of these adapters if you arnt plugged directly into a router.

Mine is set up out in a shed next to the house and it doubles as a wifi range booster.

I've got a raspi running frigate NVR and some amcrest cameras, all plugged into a 5 port POE switch with cat6 cables. you could use any computer/NVR device as the brain, but raspi is low power and frigate is still able to do object detection/recording without subscription, phone app, or wifi.
some automation is possible, so I have it message me a photo on detection; turning on lights or speakers should also be possible. tailscale lets my phone connect to raspi so I can check cams from offsite. it took a bit of technical troubleshooting, but chatgpt is helpful.
I am mostly object detecting myself, but peace of mind is nice and I can check on pets while I'm away.
