The only thing that didn't age well from this era are the high heels. Everything else is totally timeless. The narrow belts are peak effey too.

Gives me comfy nostalgic feelings of my late grandpa who was a business owner.

Riley was definitely one of the best dressed in his day, but being from Detroit, the Lakers were the enemy. plus as a kid I didn't know anything about fashion. the Pistons had Chuck Daly, a schlub that looked like his suit was off the rack. which was a good fit for Detroit, at least. I did like his haircut.

I appreciate you for saying that.
>>
>>
>>18617095
That'll never happen. It's easier to stealth advertise team merch by having the coach wear it (eg. that years team shirt that has different company sponsors on it from last year).
>>
>>18617341

in the NFL they're contractually obligated to wear team/league merch. Belichick used to wear the shittest hoodies available as protest.
>>
>>18617407
delete this

>>18617341
even in chess they're wearing blazers with advertisements on them. no I won't post an example.

>>18614685
grey pants, grey sport coat and light blue shirt, I would've thought this combination would wash out the person wearing it, but somehow it doesn't? is it the red tie?
>>
>>18614683
i think a big part of what makes these photos look good is the vintage/nostalgic camera grain, and that all the photos are candid, taken when he's in motion/doing his job. idk if it's just me but you just look cooler when your suit jacket is unbuttoned, hands on hips, in pockets, etc. taking a mirror selfie with a modern smartphone camera in an idle stance and you'll look like a square no matter what
>pictured: paul westhead, the guy who gave pat riley his job
>>
>>18617248
You are right. Just like Pat's Italian suits.

I always had a feeling that was the case. That sucks.

>>

>>18617678
Damn, these take me back. The coach cards were the most boring I thought. But I had Blazers shit everywhere back then. And they were so good. They almost made it every year there for a while. Clyde the Glide.
>>
>>18617692
This.

>>18617407
That is some fucking BULLSHIT. I haven't followed pro sports really as an adult, and it seems to have all gone to shit since I was a kid.
Remember Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday? You're telling me he would have to wear a sweatsuit or something with NFL logos on it?? It may work for Ditka, but it didn't for fucking Tom Landry.
And they hire lip readers to try and figure out the plays so these guys have to cover their mouths... shameful shit.
>>
>>18618589
yeah, the Lakers took the west every year, but the Blazers were good. I saw Clyde play the Pistons with the same team that became the bad boy team. I think it was Rodman's rookie year

based if you ask me, but that's because I wear it in this way
>>
>>18618591

Mike Nolan of the 49ers got around it by getting Reebok to make a suit for him, but I think they banned that as well
>>
>>18619026
He's a big guy.
>>
>>18619258
Smart guy. Too bad the league decided only cheap chinese poly garbage (marked up 500%) instead.
>>
>>18619258
Reebok? That's not even a sports team thing. What exactly is this rule? They just can't dress nice? Or they have to wear something that a big advertiser makes?
You need to clarify this now, because it's getting too confusing for me.
>>
Did Phil Jackson dress well enough to be recognized?
>>
>>18619315
I don't know exactly but Reebok was probably a sponsor of the league of his team. And yes, one anon mentioned above that coaches were forced as part of their job to wear the tacky sports clothes.

It must have helped that he was taller than his players. Psychologically I think he could get away with a bit more. In fact, I'd be surprised if there were any really short NBA head coaches. I think being former players has a lot to do with it. I don't believe all that stuff about height dynamics since historically there have been so many short dudes who accomplished so much, but in this one scenario it seems like you'd have an edge. I'm just probably thinking that though because the Bulls won so much under PJ, but 90% of that was Jordan alone.

This thread makes me feel like I'm 11 again and back in my old bedroom.

How do I mimic this style without being too formal?

>>
>>18620638
Drop the tie depending on context. Could also swap the jacket for a wool sweater. If a jacket is appropriate the less padding in the shoulders (I.e. soft tailored) the more informal and versatile. Mix and match trouser/jacket colours and textures. Loafers are also very casual.

they literally have to wear something with visible logos. it's in the contract, they have to do it
>>
>>18619947
>skinny fit

this is one of the worst things i've ever seen
>>
>>18620945
that's saying a lot around here
>>
>>18620945
I made that post to ridicule the fit, not to celebrate it. In case you didnt know.
>>
>>18620944
they should allow logos embroidered on the jacket the way schools that require uniforms have their crest embroidered.
I mean, they won't because they want people to see the coach wearing a team item that people can buy from the NFL store, but my way would be a decent compromise.
or like the black coaches could wear one of those giant iced-out medallions with the team logo. I guess that's only effay from a certain perspective, but at least it would be more fair.
>>
>>18621044
not him but yeah, we got it.
sick burn, too
>>
>>18620259

actually most coaches are slightly-above-average height former point guards, as they needed to know the Xs and Os in their playing days instead of just being a giant grug who puts ball in hoop
>>
>>18621276
..are you
...are you implying that only whites are smart enough to coach ball?
>>
>>18620523
Do ya know do ya know do ya know?

That Mars Blackmon 'Do The Right Thing' crossover was weird. I didn't realize until years later that it was a movie character.
>>
>>18620944
Just ANY logos? Obviously it has to tie in with the team or a sponsor of the NBA.
>>
I'm pretty late to the vintage armani obsession so I've got a question. Where should the label break be for it to actually look accurate or does it not matter as much?
>>
>>18621680
Checking back now realizing I typed label instead of lapel like a freak
>>
>>18621793
Both work actually. Coats have labels too. And if it's Armani I'm sure that label is half the fucking value anyway.
>>
>>18621680
Yes it matters
I can't remember when and in which direction sadly. I'll go digging.

>>18621885
In every photo it seems that the lapel break happens right at the waistline of the pants. I only ask because I've seen a lot of jackets second hand that either have higher or lower button placement (therefore higher/lower break)
>>
>>18617407
Why doesn't he just wear a baseball cap with a logo? Or is it specified that it has to be a hoodie or something
>>
>>18621680
Generally the top button (on a 2 button jacket) would marry up with the waistline of your trousers.
>>
>>18619478
>>18620944
was having the team logo or an nfl lapel pin not enough for these fucking jews?
>>
>>18625858
Of course not. Merchandise is a ridiculous money maker. The cost to profit ratio must be something sickening.
>>
>>18614683

Why Vintage Armani Looks So Good Now:

Finally a GQ article worth reading.

No store (unless their a speciality store) would. You'd have to find a tailor who either makes older styles, is willing to M2M you one or luck out in a thrift store.
