/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - ENGINEERS EDITION
What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them
How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush
>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

I impulsively bought these Del Toro loafers because they're having a big sale. Almost 200 off for them
I really wanted some suede loafers and something Blake stitched because I like my loafers to be light and flexible
Should be here next week

I need a boot that's fine in snow/slush/rain (think clearing the driveway in new england at the most extreme) that doesn't look like dogshit if I wear them inside. Do yall have any suggestions?
I was thinking of blundstone thermals but idk if that'll be too hot when it's not winter. Might be asking for it to do too much.

Of course. There's even an LL Bean clearance store near me.
I think I can do that for my snow/rain boots and then a nicer pair of chelseas for when I want style. Thankfully my office doesn't care too much about dress code so the bean boots will probably work. Thanks!

Astorflex greenflex maybe, though for that price all you're getting is suede and crepe soles.

>has anyone ever bought used footwear before?
Yes, but "used" has a big scale. I've bought boots that were used for photoshoots which hardly showrd signs of use. Boots that were used once or twice before the owner either realized he got the wrong size or didn't understand the break-in period.
Once I bought a heavily worn pair of a boot I wanted for cheap, used it a couple times until I was sure about sizing and then resold them for double what I paid for them.
I always disinfect the inside, regardless.

Been there, done that. They don't look refined, they don't look rugged, they aren't comfortable. They're in an awkward middle ground. Anyway just get the clarks. You'll get sick of them so don't spend any more than that.
>>
>>18637010
Weird
I wear my desert boots several times a week and have had them for a couple years. I love them because they're super comfy, there's really nothing to them but some leather and a sole, no reinforcement, no toe/heel counters, no lining.
I have completely replaced sneakers with desert boots and then I wear my "real" boots whenever I feel like it

>>
>>18637026
Crepe soles are not comfortable and in the wet they are extremely dangerous. I don't know where this meme ever came from. My chukkas are gone but I also have mali desert boots which I resoled with vibrams christys and they are much better with a wedge than they ever were with the shitty crepe.
>>
>>
>>
>>18637043
I live in arizona you think I expected it to rain? I've fallen down wearing the boots probably 4 times because on wet concrete they just immediately slip and slide. That said even the slight heel is horrific in crepe, worse than even a normal shankless heel and you certainly can't stand in them for 6 hours without foot pain like you can a wedge sole.

I inspected some bean boots at the mall and they had terrible workmanship. Jagged cut line on the leather where it meets the rubber with visble clear epoxy squeezeout everywhere. Then I looked at the keen workboot version and they had the same thing. Is there a duck boot without trash quality?

Regular maintenance is brushing with a pig bristle/coarse brush to restore a hazy shine and brushing a horse hair/fine brush to sharpen the shine.
When they don't shine up or they're looking/feeling dry, I apply very little Pure Polish cleaner/conditioner by hand, as opposed to on a cloth, let it set and then brush with the two brushes. The pictures are after cleaner/conditioner and brushing. For reference I've been using the same container of Pure Polish for all my boots and shoes for the last 4 or so years.

Hey guys, my cheap €40 boots are starting to break after 2 years and I've decided to invest in some better quality boots this time. I lurked this general for a bit to get a feel for what to look for and what to avoid but I could use some help.
This is roughly what I'm looking for:
>My budget is around €300-400 (can stretch to €500-600 if you think it's justifiable)
>Leather
>Re-soleable
>Function over form
>Lining(?)
They're mostly for casual use during colder months, I live in Sweden right now where the temperature can drop to -15C (5°F) but even so my feet rarely get cold so not sure if the lining is necessary.
I like to walk to work most days, it's 4-5km both ways (3 miles) so nothing crazy, and it's all on asphalt (or snow) if that matters, other than that they'd be used for the occasional walk in the forest.
Anyone got some pointers? Picrel is kind of what my old boots looked like (I liked the look), they were super comfy and I never got sore feet even after walking for a couple of hours even though they were the cheapest chinamade trash from a discount store. I wouldn't mind something similar but I'm open to most suggestions.
Thanks.

Navy, most shades of darker blue can work. Olive too, but it can look a bit milsurp LARP-y depending on the boot. Darker shades of gray too. If the black boot is a tea-core you've got a bit more flexibility once it starts getting worn in

lmao no that's the most outdated incorrect advice out there. people have been parroting this nonsense for decades
when it's rainy/snowy I specifically wear my boots because they're tough, warm and have a good sole
leather can get wet just fine. even suede. worst that can happen is it dries out and you just apply some conditioner. just let it dry out and you're fine
>>
>>
>>
>>18639254
You don't want your leather to be wet for long, so you should let them dry before wearing them again if you've been under the rain or snow.
Water may also affect the color depending on the leather. If you're concerned you can always apply wax beforehand as the other anon said.

Lying filthy scum. I’ve even told this guy previously and he started prostrating and apologising for his error. I guess another payment has been sent to his account so he’s ready to boldly lie again. Jesus have mercy on his soul.
Meermins are not uncomfortable and they’re good quality especially for the price. No one is ever gonna get the Whites Semi Dress. Deal with it.
>>
>>18640744
I have a scar on each of my ankles from wearing my Meermin split toe derbies I used to own to a work conference. I thought since I would be seated most of the time it would be a good way to break them in.
I absolutely destroyed my feels and they got big bloody blisters that eventually turned into scars
I have never, in all my years of wearing "nice" footwear, including PNW and Red Wing boots, brands notorious for tough break-ins, had as bad an experience breaking in shoes as I have with Meermin
And they're not only only Meermin shoes, since I assumed it was a one-off thing and got another pair on a sale. Nope. Those were brutal too, but not as bad
I learned my lesson. I will never waste time with any brands known to use plastic heel stiffeners. Leather or leatherboard only, or unlined.

>Soloshitters
Wtf? I bought some Solovairs last year and they have been phenomenal, noticeably better construction than the Doc Martens they were replacing.
Why are they considered verboten?
>>
>>
>>
>>18641179
As you probably know Solovairs are the original makers of the classic Doc Martens and they still make them like they used to whereas Doc have skimped out on quality. What you probably don't know that is that the original Doc Martens were still shit and they were only ever popular with British street culture because they were cheap. They're the kind of boot that a factory would give to the guys they suspect will quit or get fired before needing a second pair. They're some of the most overprice meme brands around along with Timberlands, who also should be on the no-no list for the record.

If you are referring to the seam at the back of the heel, it is there to make lasting easier. It makes the upper follow the last better. However, it is a one more step in construction, and marginally effective. Closed seam in particular is a seam with many steps. Skiving, stitching, opening the seam, taping. You can see in the development of the US Army jungle boot how it was dropped in iteration. A well made buttcrack, in my opinion, is a mark of care in patternmaking.

Are there any boots that look like Meermin/Thursday boots but aren't Made in China crap and don't destroy your feet?

There's like one excuse if you want them, and it's this: you want bright red or bright green boots with your punk fit.
That's it, mane. They're bad boots. I'm wearing a pair right now.

They’re made in Spain and they’re leather. >>18640744

Their being from Meermin was more about cost and opportunity - They had a GMTO with the shell I wanted for just the cost of the markup of the shell. A lot of makers have a cap toe boot, so it's just about finding the pattern you want and the ability to get it in Horween Shell Color 8.
I would not recommend the burgundy "Heritage Shell" from Meermin. Poor quality material and really uneven coloring.

Meermin has offered Horween in GMTOs in the past. They still have an old offering advertisement on one of their websites.

I've had my Jim Greens for 2 years now, very happy with them.
I stopped caring about keeping them super clean after ~6 months because these are my every day boot now. Very comfortable.

I did really like they way they looked new, but it'd be impossible to keep them that way.

What do I think about this boot? Looks cool but not sure what I think about unlined suede even though I guess it’s quite thick suede. Would have preferred fully lined I think. Same leather as this guys

Everything. Really they only have the moc toe in common
Different last, different leathers, different welts, different soles. The 1907 is a lot chunkier, the 875 is narrower
In my opinion the 875 is the much better looking boot in every single way. I find the 1907 to be pretty ugly
875 has loads more color/leather options
The 1907 last is much more forgiving and accommodating of different feet shoes. The 875 is narrow and simply doesn't work for everyone

I’m very tempted to buy these. I figured they’d be a good everyday boot. Are they a good sneaker replacement? I own a pair of RW Iron Rangers, but I mostly wear them during winter, early spring, and late fall.

I have to stand around outside waiting for public transit. I think I'd be fine if I was walking.

I haven't, I have a pair of smartwools I can try it with.

Fuck, man. That sucks. I have only one recommendation based on my time in the shit. Just be careful because cold, sweaty feet are a way worse than just cold feet.
>>
wtf? a 2 years ago I bought some TLB shoes and they were $439, now they're $575?
I got some Carminas a few years back and they're $200 more in price
people are always like "why is the quality shoe industry dying? why are there no cobblers anymore?"

same, I'm pretty set on the african ranger in the brown full grain leather
>>18642404
is that so?
I'll think about it since I would sometimes wear them during the wet season

It's not all that bad, it's cheaper and faster than driving, but my route is the least reliable one in the state so sometimes I'm waiting longer than I planned freezing my balls off kek. It's only really a problem because it's been the coldest, most bitter winter in a couple of years. I'll keep the hotfeet in mind but they may be actually be overkill.

Yeah but wages haven't gone up. Classic stagflation
Everything costs way more, no one is earning more so people buy less
People buy less so brands have to increase prices even more, and then they've completely priced everyone out and they go out of business
That's what's happening to every good footwear brand that isn't cucking out and moving production overseas
>>
What brands should I consider? Everyday boots for being casually social and the office. Nothing very fancy. Preferably arch support for a regular arch without needing an insert.

both are fairly casual boots that should work in an office, unless you have a dress code
if you are allowed to wear jeans to work, both should be fine
the mp has a lower heel and has an almond toe shape so it's more dressy that way
