I'm getting conflicting information online whether it's acceptable to wear a white button down shirt open with a t shirt underneath. I thought it looked good on me but what's the consensus on this?

I've never thought about this, but after looking at your stock image it does look kind of weird if you unbutton the shirt to show the t shirt underneath. I usually wear white t shirts underneath my flannels or oxford button up shirts to offer some muted color contrast with the shirt that also happens to match with my converse/vans. That said, if you try to wear a white tee under a white dress shirt, the chances that the shades of white are exactly the same are very slim, which ultimately makes it look weird. You need some contrast. To achieve this, wear a different colored button up shirt with a white tee, or just wear a white button up with no white tee underneath.

Naw, that's trash. You're wearing an Oxford like a jacket. It might have worked for teenagers in the '90s, but even then they made it a point to use different colors and patterns. Not plain white.

Yeah, an open plain white shirt on a white t-shirt is some trailer trash degeneracy. Wear proper patterns and colors you faggot. Better yet, wear a flannel shirt because it will look more like a overshirt than just a regular shirt. Wearing a basic bitch white buttoned shirt open will just look sloppy, like you forgot to button up your shirt.

I think its kinda cool, wear it if you like it, personally i would try wearing it with a black undershirt for contrast, but that's assuming you can't see the black t shirt's sleeves through the white shirt.

I don't know, I tought because its white, it's going to be more versatile than a pattern or different colors. I was thinking of a minimalist style like a white t shirt goes with everything. I almost never wear button shirts (due to being short and they are always way too long) just t shirts so branching out I gravitated to the white button down.

your main problem is seeking permission in the first place. as soon as you notice yourself start caring about clothes you have to follow your intuition over mens fashion sludge content and your idiot peers who will call you gay. you're in an in-between phase where everything "extra" you want to do seems gay. if you do this layering thing and you have a bunch of accessories and cool pants, everyone will accept the undershirt as one of the tamer aspects of the outfit. the worst thing you can do is not commit. if its not normal to wear an undershirt in your area, it needs to be paired with something else intentional and not normal. Also white on white is so boring. If the undershirt was leopard print and the shirt was zebra print that would be pretty cool. if they're both gonna be the same color you could consider making the materials different i.e. silk, corduroy, leather. silk undershirt with a leather shirt is epic

I forgot to mention that usually the shirt is cropped and a little extra wide. It doesn't matter if the shirt has structure, think about how normal flannels and an undershirt are. Here's some other materials and patterns you can use with this combo to achieve layering contrast
woodland camo
duck camo (aka frogskin)
argyle
plaid
brand monograms
cow print
giraffe print
genuine fur (plastic fur sucks for various reasons)
silk velvet
embossed leather (like gator and snake patterns)
gemstones
rhinestones
glitter
patches
pins
since I mentioned jewelry some materials to look into are sterling silver, gold, moissanite, pearls, bone, ceramic, wood. you can mostly plug searches into etsy and scroll until something good comes up and look into the seller

I'm more into minimalism and high quality aspect in clothes. I want to dress plainly, mainly focusing on the perfect fit on my body and high quality construction and material that could last multiple generations. I don't want to own a lot of clothes, just a few items that I could cycle through and put on without thinking about if it works well together.

That's how I usually dress, my wardrobe is full of shirts but I wear stupid t shirts underneath, I think it works on me because I'm a 6'2 lanky dude and I wanna give the impression that I'm a nerd or a loser.
Ditch the plain colors, you will look like a fag, even more than me, instead go for a more aggressive style and don't be scared of mixing textures and patterns that you wouldn't have thought before of using, make yourself look interesting.
