Get some Selsun Blue. Some Head & Shoulders. Some Denorex. The tingling lets you know it's working.

what works for me is I wash the dirt and oil out of my hair with normal shampoo, then I put dandruff shampoo on. just enough to spread it over my head and rub it into my scalp, i.e. I use it like medicine not to wash my hair. then I wash my body. then I take one of those rubber scalp massager things and rub any loose skin off my scalp while I rinse out the dandruff shampoo. if I want conditioner, I put it into my damp hair after I dry off.
I looked it up on mayoclinic.org and there's like 5 different types of medicine you can get in dandruff shampoo (without a prescription, anyway) so I bought the cheapest version of each and tried them all. they all worked better than regular shampoo, but the coal tar shampoo was easily twenty times better than everything else. for me, anyway. I just bought the cheapest on scamazon because the only tar shampoo at my supermarket was Neutrogena and $$$. the cheap stuff works great. it still costs more than my regular shampoo so that's why I use only enough to coat my scalp and normal shampoo to wash.

Dandruff is not just dry skin. It's caused by a fungus. To treat dandruff you have to use an antifungal
This is what I used and it cleared my dandruff up extremely fast. I use it once a week as a maintenance thing and I haven't had dandruff since I started using it.
Head and Shoulders DOES NOT WORK. Do not waste your time with it. Get Nizoral, or see a dermatologist and get what they recommend, but only an antifungal will actually get rid of dandruff

Then "dandruff" the fungal disease you speak of is not the cause of all flakes. Because Head & Shoulders and other over-the-counter dandruff shampoos DO work for a number of people. Maybe you just had some sort of extreme case. But if everyone needed to see a dermatologist over it and the regular shampoos didn't work we'd know. And people like me would not have had success so easily. So if you're correct, maybe I didn't really have clinical dandruff fungus, but whatever I did have was cleared up by store brand OTC dandruff shampoo.

I have bad hygiene, can that make my fungi worse? also I heard depending on the type of dandruff you need to use different types of products, is this true?

I don't know. I just know the other guy is wrong. He had a real bad case of something that normal shampoos wouldn't cure. I just had something mild and normal like millions of other people. You probably don't have fungi. But STOP having bad hygiene. What the fuck? Bathe every day like a responsible adult.

Are you changing your tune now? If it was fungus then why didn't I need some prescription shampoo from a doctor? You can't have it both ways. Either dandruff is fungus that OTC shampoo kills or not. But Head and Shoulders works for most people. You're going to have to walk some of your bullshit statements back.

you don't need to see a doctor to get an antifungal you retard. that's just what anti dandruff shampoos are
Head and Shoulders uses zinc pyrithione as its main antifungal ingredient. H&S is an antifungal
Nizoral uses ketoconazole as its main ingredient
Selsun Blue uses selenium sulphide as its main one
All of these things are designed to kill the fungus causing dandruff. You pretending you have dandruff but no fungus and you don't need to go to a doctor because you can get these OTC just proves you're a fucking retard with absolutely zero clue what you're talking about

Are you >>18645544 or not? If not I don't care what you have to say. I was responding to that retard. Read >>18645671 again carefully and you'll see I didn't specifically deny it's a fungus. If you're not the Nizoral dude than you have no business arguing with me. If you are, you lost the argument and you're changing it.
Either way, I don't have dandruff and I haven't in 20 years and this is pointless to argue about. I just wanted to post old commercial stills and tv clips. I have no dog in this fight except to argue against people who speak in absolutes like "H&S DOES NOT WORK". Because that's clearly false. You agree with me.
Good day, sir.

These are unironically the best two answers itt. If you don't want to see a dermatologist, then try Nizoral for a month (use lightly and only every other day. Once dandruf clears up use it once or twice a week.) Don't use any other shampoo unless your skin is particularly oily or you work a very dirty job. Just thoroughly rinse your hair with water in the shower. You don't want excess sebum nor do you want to blast it all away, your scalp is a delicate ecosystem and you're looking for balance. If you want to condition your hair as well either use 50% diluted vinegar or some very light oils like argan or jojoba. But first focus on dandruff, once that's controlled you can look for conditioning strategies. If the dandruff doesn't clear up with Nizoral then you have more complicated issues and you really should see a dermatologist because it could be something like psoriasis which requires medicine to treat.

I've been using this alpecin double effect shampoo for about a year. The anti-dandruff effect works for me, and I think the caffeine has probably helped with hair quality/thickness, but that's more subjective
