i had a youtube video playing in safari on my ipad and lost track of making new tabs and it crashed my browser, but the problem is is as it crashed i heard one of my speakers crackle and break. i cant hear any sound come out of it or anything, what happened? i didnt realize something like that was possible and feel like i got really unlucky that something as dumb as my browser crashing damaged my device and im probably going to spend money to get it fixed or a new one if i cant get the warranty to help.

How does Windows compressed folder work?
I *copied* over 150 000 text files at >10 KiB per txt into a compressed folder.
Looking at the properties of the folder the "size on disk" is 37% of the real size of the txt files.
Great.
However! Looking at the disk itself the free space on the drive went down 400% of the real size of the txt files.
What is going on? Is Windows quietly compressing the files over time and I will eventually get the space back? Or wtf is this, the CPU's System Idle Process is at 99% so it's not exactly working hard it seems... The task manager doesn't show activity on the disk either.

I'd start with the wiki
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPython
python can be implemented in different ways, there is not just one interpreter (or compiler if you compile your python code). CPython is the main or "reference implementation"
Think of how libaom-av1 is the reference, while other av1 implementations exist such as libsvtav1 or av1_nvenc

Is running Docker on Windows a bad idea? Most popular images I need (like Plex) say they're unsupported and a bad idea due to the way Windows interacts with docker. I was hoping to play around with Docker to see if I should replace bare metal installs but guess I can't, unless I run a linux vm > docker > container which seems silly.

I recently purchased a Samsung G95SD 49" MegaMonitor. It appears that the only way to change source is:
>hit the home button on the remote
>*black screen, wait a few seconds*
>now I'm on some kind of a smart TV thing with a bunch of ads for TV shows i don't care about
>scroll all the way left for the menu
>scroll down to connected devices
>press right
>*black screen, wait for it*
>press right again
>*black screen, wait for it*
>press right again
>now i'm on the right input. hit enter
>*black screen, wait for it*
>screen shows what I want it to show
my old monitor cost about 5% of what this monitor cost and it just had a button on the monitor that i could press to change source
am i doing it wrong or is this just another example of Samsung being awful? remote has buttons for netflix, youtube and prime video but no button to switch source... thinking i ought to ask my congressman to bring the boys back home and leave these fuckers to get nuked.

I don't understand why the streaming services offer the option to buy movies when then the movies can disappear if the licensing changes. There should be a way that if that happens then you get your money back or something.
For what I read there is no way to buy movies digitally and not have those problems. I don't like buying Blu-rays because then I would start buying more and more movies that I like and then I will have so many plastic cases stored in boxes. All of this when we should be able to buy them digitally but without the problems that I mentioned before.

any idea how I can get around discord's age verification process while retaining my privacy (they just had a huge leak of user ID data after they said they had deleted it)?
I've tried ai faceswap programs on my machine (deep-live-cam, etc.), I have a 5090 but none of the programs work, it's python clusterfuck because some of those programs are kinda old, onnxruntime is utter fucking trash. The ones that do work use my cpu instead which makes it really, really slow and unusable.
Is there an easy way to create a face or change my own and control it? They ask you to open and close your mouth in the scan.

What is the threshold at which a temperature is actually harmful to a PC or laptop for it to be at for more then a few seconds at a time?
If my laptop stays between 70 and 80c while playing games, is that going to meaningfully reduce it's lifespan if I play games for an hour or two at a time once a day or so?
>>
>>107951220
Encrypt it with a long, randomly-generated (no cheating, keep it random) passphrase
Depending on how paranoid you want to be, you might want to think about getting your laptop snatched while it's open, or about cameras or microphones in your room, or about backdoors in your CPU. Though if it's just to protect against your girlfriend seeing your pony porn then it doesn't matter
>>
>>107951470
Not necessarily. Encryption of existing data is basically equivalent to overwriting it with random data (from the point of view of the disk, that's literally what you're doing, even if in reality the data is not "random" but rather you're reading as you go and using an encryption algorithm). Due to wear levelling, SSDs will very roughly speaking try to avoid writing to the same physical area twice in a row. So if your SSD is half-full and you encrypt it, it's entirely possible all the encrypted data will go on the other, unused half, and all your unencrypted data will still exist on the memory chips completely unaffected.
The true safest way is to set up encryption before you begin using the SSD, so you only ever store encrypted data on the disk and therefore secure deleting doesn't matter.
The second best way is probably to try overwriting it several times over, though even that isn't a guarantee. If you don't need to reuse the disk then physical destruction (including comprehensive destruction of the flash chips themselves) is also generally quite safe.
>>
>>107951913
>why
Why do they do it? Because they get money. If the licensing changes it's not their problem, they already got your money anyway.
Why are they allowed? Because you agree to the T&Cs. It will almost always spell out in detail how you're buying a license to view the movie from the service and the service and the movie's original publisher and everyone involved all reserve the right to alter the terms of the license or revoke it entirely from you for any reason at any time. Don't like it don't pay for it basically.
There's been some hubbub recently about Steam putting a clear "you are buying a license, not the actual ownership of the game" on their store checkout page or some shit, but that's just to make it more visible; the actual legal agreements whenever you buy something digitally have always been in place and you've always had to agree to them to complete the purchase.
The exceptions are the few and far between DRM-free stores that allow you to download the item (song, game, etc.) freely without requiring any online license or connection to use it afterwards. But the few that do it generally market it pretty loudly, because it's a lot less profitable than the normal way so their entire business model is carving out a market niche by appealing to those customers that truly care, thus sacrificing some profits in return for gaining customers without having to directly compete head to head against the established giant platforms.
>>
>>107951978
You do need steam and it does run on linux
No idea otherwise, check out the thing that had all the tiktok videos being spammed everywhere of pajeets being able to face swap to any kind of normal-looking person in real time.
>>
>>107952229
>What is the threshold at which a temperature is actually harmful to a PC or laptop for it to be at for more then a few seconds at a time?
It's called "tj max" and it's the temperature at which the PC or laptop will automatically instantly shutdown. You don't need to worry about it yourself
>If my laptop stays between 70 and 80c while playing games, is that going to meaningfully reduce it's lifespan if I play games for an hour or two at a time once a day or so?
No, not meaningfully. Not unless you're planning on keeping it for the next 20 years or something: the processing power will likely become obsolete, or a laptop will fall apart, usually long long before the actual processor will start experiencing old age.
>>
>>
>>107952340
I've never had a laptop last me more then 3-4 years before the keyboard started to malfunction or the GPU shat itself, and I'd like this one to last me more like 5-7 years.
I didn't even really play many games on them, but I did perpetually have like hundreds of internet tabs open and leave the laptops on for weeks at a time. I imagine the temps for the CPU were between 50-60c most of the time.

How do I make google serve me easier captchas? I've been suffering though what feels like max difficulty captchas to post on 4chan from my PC for like a week. Every time I have to do three sets of complex captcha challenges in a row. But when on my phone, I get much simpler challenges.
There has to be like a website or something where you can show google you aren't a bot and then get a browser cookie that lets you have easy challenges for like 48 hours.

If you've been watching videos then you should know how poisonous and time consuming it would be to do so. You're better off buying some old jewelry and melting it down.
But that's the easy part. You also need to know lost wax casting and then how to finish and set the "gems" in the ring. If done properly you're looking at many hundreds of dollars in tools, equipment, and consumables. Expect to fuck up and recast the ring multiple times to get it right.

As shitty as it is it's not like DRM is new. You needed a way to remove it from DVDs and blurays too if you store to take your physical collection on hard drives. At this point in time the encryption is fairly broken/weak on streams so it's trivial to remove it most of the time with the exception of some 4K content. That doesn't excuse your complaints about disappearing access. These are simply the methods we must resort to in order to archive what we paid for.

That sounds like typical Samsung smart TV behavior. The way to deal with it is to buy a cheap HDMI switcher that comes with a remote, connect that to one input, set it to that, and chuck the Samsung remote in a drawer. Also if you can get away with it, delete your wifi network from the TV or change its password on the router. Otherwise there's a decent chance your TV is watching what you watch.

Replacing dead notebook cooler fan. I'm halfway done, just done removing the dead one and I'm about to make a sandwich while waiting for replies. Two questions:
The original had 3 wires, the replacement has 4. The connector is the same, it fits on the MOBO and and the MOBO does have four pins for all the contacts and all. Question is: I'm gaining something out of this fourth pin, what is it supposed to be? Speed control? Tachometer? Lm_sensors would give and RPM reading before the fan died, so I assume I had a tach before? But then it would speed up and slow down depending on the temps so I also had PWM? But all that with three pins? What gives? I'd always have ground and positive, right? Could it be that before it was ground, PWM and tach? Does that exist?
Anyway, the more pressing question is about tape. The original had some silvery fibery tape thing to direct the air into the fins. I had to cut that out, it was caked up after I dunno, ten fifteen years (I got this used). Was that tape any special heat resisting or reflecting or whatever fancy tape? I'm about to replace it with electrical tape, it's all I have at hand right now. It's still early caturnday here so if I get replies soon enough I might be able to go out and get something else.

I want to buy or make a NAS as backup option for the personal documents I wish to secure (family photos, contracts, etc). Currently I have a couple of disks in RAID in my PC, but considering its age (about 13 years) I'm increasingly worried that a hardware failure would nuke everything. I also remember something about RAID being not a good option anymore for such applications, but don't know what I should look into for a modern long term local data storage system. I appreciate suggestions because search engines nowadays just try to sell you stuff without actually answering anything.

Do ISPs fuck with your uploading rates when it comes to torrents? I've been using my current ISP for a long while, and any time I've tried to seed it's basically been nonexistent. NAS is a function, backups are a process. You still have to backup the NAS, but you can treat the NAS itself as the (first stage of the) backup process.
So your PC will work as a NAS even with old disks in RAID, just make sure you have working, regular backups for the data on your NAS.

>I also remember something about RAID being not a good option anymore
It protects against the number one risk, hardware failure of disks. If you keep the data on another device unsynchronized, it protects against a lot more things, too.
The risks of losing data with a low number of non-retarded users is something like this:
90% risk, disk failure (or mobo for soldered laptops, phones etc) = protected by raid or 2 copies:
5% risk, data deleted by software bug = protected by 2 copies, not RAID
2% risk, catastrophic PSU (or similar) failure that destroys all disks = protected by having data on 2 separate machines
1% accidental overwrite/delete = protected by 2 copies, not RAID
1% Ransomware = only protected if the backup location is not mounted
1% house fire = Only protected if one copy is not local
So raid or such takes care of the biggest problem. For full protection, back up to someone elses computer. ENCRYPTED of course. You can use duplicati for this, then back up to backblaze or any cloud drive.

My PC currently has the two main archival disks set for the 1:1 copy of one disk to another (RAID 1, perhaps). It's redundant but not optimal. I wanted to get a NAS with at least 4 bays so the data is shared across all disks with the system tolerating one or two disk deaths before losing everything (RAID 5 perhaps), but then I remembered reading about RAID having a single point of failure in the hardware handling it, meaning that if the motherboard and/or the CPU dies then all the data is lost and that there are better systems now. What I want is a more efficient storage system with no single point of failure: a disk dies, I swap the disk and the data is restored; the system dies I chuck the disks into another machine with the relevant software on it and still have everything. The most important stuff will still live on my PC along with the NAS so that it's in two different machines.

Microsoft pretty much killed it. Worse, more expensive hardware than playstation at every turn since xbox one, then no more exclusives(everything on PC) since series X, and since a year or two, everything on PS too. They are retardedly hoping to sell through xbox store and selling xbox game pass.

>what game settings can i turn up that will impact my GPU more than CPU
And #1 is turn textures to ultra and texture streaming off. This will use a bunch of your vram to make your game look better. Not sure what impact resolution has.
if your are on AMD you can use the Adrenalin overlay to monitor both CPU and GPU, change a setting, then run the in game benchmark or play a while and look at the CPU/GPU usage meters.

But let's say you could acquire an abandoned underground mine near the coast in Atlantic Canada. There's several that even go out under the seabed (Wabana is probably not a great choice, though). Seawater as a coolant is a complete nonstarter obviously. But could you conceivably use a closed-loop liquid coolant system with seawater as the heatsink? House the servers underground, run the coolant pipes into radiators on or in the seabed.

Nice! Just keep in mind that the firmware is uploaded to the adapter every time it is connected, it's not saved on the adapter, so you may need to repeat the download process if those two files get overwritten with older versions.

This is the USB controller, the issue may be unrelated to the WiFi adapter.
Are there other USB devices plugged into that machine? Try unplugging all of them except the adapter and see if the issue persists.
Some suggestions online mention adding this to the kernel command line:usbcore.autosuspend=-1
To do this for one boot, press 'e' when you see the GRUB menu and type that text at the end of the 'linux' line, then boot.
If you've done it correctly then that parameter will appear in /proc/cmdline
If it doesn't improve things, just reboot to get rid of that parameter.

MOV isn't a web format, it won't play in any web browser.

That's not how it works.

Use a screwdriver to remove the PCB and dispose of it separately. The data is effectively unrecoverable (very expensive) without that board.
You could also just hit the HDD with a hammer, one good hit is all it takes.

>screen will be blank
It won't.
How do you imagine the graphics drivers get installed? Blindly?

They would need access to lots of power.
Salt water is nasty, it would need to be filtered anyway, and being under the sea means you need to make sure that water doesn't penetrate through the tunnels you'd dig for the cooling pipes.

He probably had a good idea or is a good salesman, neither of which are offered by AI.
He'd still be making the same money (minus the developer's pay) without AI.

Are Realtek laptop network card really shitty?
No idea if it was a defective card, but the new laptop I got at the beginning of the year was working fine. I had to disable power-saving mode because it was awful.
Then last week the bluetooth mouse that was connected started lagging, badly. I ended up replacing the card with the one in my previous laptop, which used a Mediatek for wifi and a very non-descriptive "Foxconn / Hon Hai Wireless_Device" for bluetooth, but it's working great now.

which panel would be appropriate? which panel would put the lightest load on the powerbank? apparently it may also have a cooling fan that doesnt operate, so light load would probably be best

so my question is which of these panels are safe to wire into?
>all the panels have pretty thick neg and pos wires dangling off them.
and should i also add a fuse between powerbank wires and panel wires?

guess they fucked up some error messages, you couldn't post images in your incognito window while phoneposting and would get an error message explaining it. now it doesn't let (at least for me) you do that on the desktop either but it gives you the wrong fucking message lol

so i have a website that has a link on it but it isn't using a normal address or IP like google.com or 1.0.0.1 it uses some base64 bullshit and i haven't gotten anywhere trying to decode it using normal or URL base64, how the fuck do i figure out what the encrypted link is?
i'm trying to get the site so i can filter it, the website detects and crys about adblockers which is why i'm not just using that
