started using mpv as my image viewer and its a pretty nice expeience after having set up the profiles and input sections. my only gripes are that it' somewhat slow and ram-heavy compared to a standalone image view, and that wayland won't allow the window to remain centered when opening new files so i've had to relegate it to the top-left corner of my screen if i dont want large images spilling onto my second monitor. otherwise being able to browse my pic folders with mixed images/webm etc with ease is very satisfying.

AV1 software decoding is plenty fast, only less power efficient. Typically that's only a problem if you're using a mobile device (battery runtime).
For maximum quality with no concern for file size, x264/x265 still beats AV1. For mini encodes, AV1 is generally better, but of course it still depends on the specific encodes you're comparing.
Then there's other stuff to consider like included audio and sub tracks, and AV1 being typically re-encodes that are released later than the webrip they're based on.

Apparently it can't be done as-is because the language of each track isn't read at the moment the profiles are triggered, so you can't reference it.
There's a workaround with certain scripts, but it seems a bit cumbersome.
