Pretty much. It's so that, just in case, some amazing hyper-skilled dev happens to apply you can recruit him and simply "make" a position in your company for him. It's a good way for big companies to keep their feelers out and pick up any actual talent without having to commit to filling a vacant position.

got reached out by a YC startup and they wanted me to contribute to their github repo before signing a contract. seems like some kind of scam. look at the number of forks and pull requests - https://github.com/adenhq/hive
My question is, why even do this? Imagine what a mess that codebase is going to be and having to deal with endless stupid PRs to save some money.
>>
>>107975186
Startups are usually dirt-poor or at least not interested in paying for work they can get for free. I've gotten similar offers before but I always make it very clear that I'll gladly code for them until they hire me - but they pay my consultation fee.
Sometimes they even accept.
>>
>>107975186
so let me see if i get this straight, a startup that probably won't exist in 3 years wants you to work for FREE while you're unemployed with some vague promise of a contract
have you seen the contract?
does it specifically say that you will be hired after X accepted contributions?
how about compensation for your time like >>107975205 said?

My vision is shit and I got into IT because I was sold a LIE that I could just work without talking to anyone and it would be fine and now the industry is raped with foreign labour. If I could get a job working from home I'd do it but I'm no longer qualified to do most things because of a break from a surgery and I have no idea how to get back into things.
What am I supposed to do when I can't drive and can't even see bus numbers for public transport? Disability is abused as fuck so I'll never get on it.

Do you ever get the feeling you just weren't made for this society?
Like there's something fundamentally wrong with the way you were put together?
Like maybe you'd be happier in some actual third-world shithole tending sheep or whatever.
>>
>>
>>107979101
I think about that all the time. It's important to remember than mankind has been on this rock (depending a little bit on where you start counting) about 300000 years and we've only spent the last thousand or so doing this entire "modern society" thing.
Maybe this isn't the way humans are suppose to function? The entire 9-5 daily grind for Shekelberg might not be how humanity was meant to exist and are we even really happier now?

I'm not sure I would be happier tending sheep to be honest. I would probably get sick of it within a few years in the same way I got sick of everything else. The only time I ever felt alive was when I went camping with family and family friends when I was younger, but it wasnt like hardcore camping. I also started to miss modern conveniences by the 3rd day. Dunno maybe I just am not made to be happy, and maybe this is part of the human condition. After all, if our ancestors were easily satisfied they would have stayed in their caves and mud huts forever.

I've worked many different jobs in vastly different fields, but it always went the same way:
>everyone tells me I learn much faster than the average worker
>enjoy working hard, putting in effort
>life is good
>suddenly can't stand my coworkers or superiors
>performance goes down
>end up sperging out at someone
it's just not meant to be

>>107979101
Oh yeah. Thankfully I got very lucky with finances early on and retired without needing to subject myself to much of the workforce. I feel genuinely bad for people who need to commit to the rat race, it's bad enough just doing enough conforming for women to tolerate you. Probably would've been happier tending sheep if I got an arranged marriage and some bros to drink with and a society that's not so damn negative and repressive

I started a cybersecurity master's degree at WGU so I could be productive while job searching. I ended up graduating and still don't have a job so I'm just unemployed now. Today I got high on DXM (i.e. cough syrup) and played Cruelty Squad. It felt so right. Later I'm going to stare out the window and think about (ending my) life.

And what would be the point starting one today? being unemployed for 4 years in a dying industry while pretending I'm doing something and spending thousands of dollars to review shit I already know, except this time some black jewish dean signs a piece of paper certifying that I know how to invert a binary tree? Anons, I'm in the last semester of my CS-Entrepreneurship (dual major) degree.
Up to early December I worked as an IT manager (for around 6 months) for a small art college and since 2022 I've been (still am) working in escalated issues general IT for a large (partly govt'-owned) company.
In the past I wanted to go into programming, but I've also got over 5 years of experniece in IT in a job and well over a decade and half as a hobbyist/volunteering/at home (mainly GNU/Linux focused, everyrhing from servers, to distro maibtainer, to networking and even hardware flashing).
Seeing as the current state of the market is what it is, and that I started with conputers not with programming but more with hardware and networks - is it reasobale to go do sone certs post-graduation or will that not give the stability I'm looking for?
Anecdotally, I see sysadmins are doing much better than programmer here - but there could be some bias I'm not privy to.

I'm in this boat. Browsing for jobs is so demotivational. Everything is either retail, aka peddle garbage at people who don't know better, healthcare, aka keep people alive who should have been dead a long time ago, or insurance, aka scam people into paying stupid fees for shit they most likely won't need.
There's like 3 IT positions open in my area, 2 are junior level helldesk shit that already have a billion applicants and the last one is a senior architect position that requires 8 years of experience. I'm thinking of applying to the latter. Fuck it, worst they can say is no.

I used to work for Klarna. No job has ever killed me inside quite as thoroughly as that.
You have no idea how fucked people are financially. Some of the stories from the people I talked to are genuinely heartbreaking. Not all of them though, a ton of people have just chimped out and bought a new car or some other crap they couldn't afford.
My former coworkes might be the most soulless husks of people I think I've ever seen. Working in this kind of job pretty much means that you HAVE to get enjoyment out of the suffering of others.

I can outline my time there, although I was in customer support management, which might not be relatable to IT helpdesk.
Positives:
>pretty well-paid, even compared to similar areas
>good healthcare plan
>tons of company retreats, parties and similar events, all free for employees
>great benefits, company car, open cafeteria and so on
Negatives:
>soulstealing, you feel like you're part of societies problem
>colleagues are mostly subhuman trash and behave like roaches
>the sales and marketing department contain some of the worst people on this planet
>99% of the customers you deal with are financially ruined
>>
>User has problem
>They want it resolved a specific way

Healthcare, especially administration, is one of the few sectors growing rapidly. Their hiring practices are retarded, even by modern standards. I applied for a job with HCA and didn't hear back from them until a year later when I got an email saying they were moving forward with other candidates because my salary requirements were too high. There wasn't a question about salary on the application and I'd had no communications with them between the application and the rejection a year later.

I have definitely seen this. The hospitals' near me sometimes have cool data engineer/scientist positions open and their platform for applying is some of the most dated shit ever and they never get back to you.

Did you say how MUCH of Go you know? You can pretty easily hammer down the fundamentals in 2 days. If you get the job and have a somewhat long startup time you can probably learn a lot before you actually start or just vibecode until you do.
>>
>>107989187
So learn it. Do the Go tour and then quickly create some stupid project from scratch like a terminal calculator or a web server just to catch any little basic things that you immediately forgot from the tutorial. Practice channels and goroutines a little since they're the only constructs that don't necessarily have an analogue in basically every other language and you might not have an intuition for them.
I was in the same situation as you when I applied for the job that I'm currently leaving. Go fucking sucks by the way. World's most braindead language.

If it is a mid sized or big company, chances are the CTO hasn't done any actual technical work in 10 years and only has surface lvel knowledge at anything beyond the system/technology level, so get that surface level knowledge to not seem completely clueles and you'll likely be fine.
If it is a startup then you might just be fucked though lol.

This is not true. The average peasant had around as much disposable income as the average current day person. Though luxury items and entertainment were much more expensive, so that disposable income didn't get too far, but still. They had their daily life needs fairly well covered.
The only thing that has really advanced is medicine. Beyond that, a current day average person doesn't live a significantly better life than the average person from a decently stable area from a thousand years ago.
Life before was just different. It wasn't the hell on earth modern day globohomo tries to make you think it was.

I believe I would be happiest as some sort of craftsman like a metalsmith.
The problem with modern work is that efficiency and utilisation are important since market reach is bigger than ever before.
There's no such thing as downtime in tech, there's no off season.
You need low work periods or you get burnt out.
>>
>>
>>
>>107989860
I think this may depend on the period in question. Post Black Death, peasants gained significant improvements in quality of life and income because there weren’t many people around. This mostly stayed till the enclosure movement where the aristocrats kicked out all the sharecropping peasants and they all went to the cities to work.

Just because you trip on the road to greatness doesn’t mean you should give up. Don’t let these young hot shots get you down. You do actually have to engage with the thought terminating cliche that comparison is the thief of joy. Realise that you have to make it work because you’re in the extremely privileged position to improve your circumstances with the mental and physical capacity to boot. Don’t fucking give up man.

not sure what to do. entry-level dev is totally evaporated.
my brother says i should be applying for "just any office job", since a degree + wagie-manager experience apparently counts for a lot to those jobs (according to him), whereas dev jobs nowadays really wanna see dev experience specifically
>>
>>107990746
your brother is an out of touch idiot but fundamentally correct. just apply to everything. the job listings are all lies anyway, even if you wanted to curate your applications it's basically impossible to do so honestly because it's a fundamentally dishonest if not overtly hostile interaction
>>
>>
>>107990746
Yeah, an office job is kinda fine. You can look at alternative IT jobs, but they’re a fucking trap. Sure, they pay, but you’ll end up paying more money than you earn. This depends on the country, though. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if the west eventually adopts this model too, with the rise of immigration

Some people are naturally good at getting jobs, and some people are naturally bad at it. If you’ve got that rizz, that aura, that zest, then you can get hired easily in your situation. But you’re in this thread so I wouldn’t hold my breath.
>>
>>107993105
I usually apply if I have 60-70% of the required experience. I was a G for cloud hosting, but we used VMware. All the job adverts I see now say I need experience with AWS or Azure. If I have everything else, I apply anyway; if the job doesn’t ask for anything else, I won’t.

Yes, because why not? As long as you actually show your worth, it’s usually fine. They expect you to learn very fast and I mean very fast, like in days for tools you’ve never used in your life tho
But be careful where you’re applying. As long as you’re not touching something too fragile, that’s fine

People didn't have shorter lifespans 1000 years ago. It was just childhood mortality that brought the average down. If you made it to adulthood, you lived just as long as anyone today, maybe even longer since your diet didn't consist mostly of poisonous slop like it does today.

Literally read a book you dumb nigger. You've got the time since you're not working.
The average life expectancy was early to mid 30's all the way to the 1700's. In the year 1800, every country in the world had an average life expectancy below 40.

The average lifespan of someone who made it to adulthood was 60 years in 1850. And people were living in way more miserable crowded conditions at the start of the Industrial Revolution than they were in the Middle Ages.

People dont understand how much AI will replace humans,
2040 unemployment rate world wide will be 80%
2050 it will be nearly 95%
in 5 yeras there is not a single job that humans can do with Computer better than AI
>>
>>107994059
So the people who didn't make it to adulthood don't count as having had a shorter life expectancy? "if you just don't die, you live"?
also your figures are skewed by the aristocracy living significantly longer than the working man. In the early 1800s if a working class man reached 18 he could expect an average of about 20 more years, while an aristocrat could average about 35 more.

Anyone studying and ESPECIALLY thinking of studying CS should just quit. Opinions on vibe coding recently have changed drastically recently. This will mean much leaner teams becoming glorified reviewers. The number of programmer jobs will drop significantly in the next two years. Who the fuck is going to hire a junior in 2028?

Now I remember the time when a recruiter gave us a test and said they needed people, so we should expect a really fast response. Then there was no response. Not long after that, I saw the same hiring advertisement from them again, saying they were open. Like, god damn what kind of super genius people are they actually looking for that they reject everyone who took the test and keep fucking “hiring” every fucking month, despite saying they’re desperate to find new employees? I swear some recruiters just want to look busy so they run fake recruitment processes to seem productive

there is some kind of corporate tax break for companies that post job listings, even if they never actually fill those fake jobs. it makes muh economy look better. drumpf or biden or whoever can point to indeed.com and say look at all these jobs we created, the economy is soo good right now, armed revolution averted

Every aspect of this dogass industry is boiling over with non-working subhumans doing the bare minimum of not getting fired.

Our society is developed enough that only 5-10% need productive jobs holding society up like maintaining infrastructure, managing farming equipment and doing healthcare, the rest is just doing bs work because system can’t give everyone free money while the 5-10% is worked to the bones. Even if the remainder of society wanted to get into those jobs they can’t because there either isn’t that many positions or it’s hard to get into them, like healthcare requiring the most amount of years in education and doing some of the hardest courses in all of tertiary education.
