What point dipshit? I have a house, I have a paid off car, I have thousands left over a month in extra income after fulfilling my savings, 401k, and IRA. What the fuck else am I supposed to do if not spend money to enjoy life? I travel regularly, I do activities like hockey twice a week. You just sound like a faggot man.

Paying off a house early is a retarded idea, it's a low interest loan and then you have no liquid money to use in things that make you money like stocks etc.
Man kids are retarded, although I guess you can't blame people who would never experience home ownership.

It's essentially a generational divide. Gen Z is poor and can't have anything so they yell at the people who can. Millennials and Gen X have grown up in a "show off what you bought" social aspect so every time they buy something they're coming to places to discuss said thing and show it off.

Saw a thread a few days ago calling James Scholz a performative grifter, or something to that effect.
>Scholz
Interestingly, this dude has little to no consistency in his workflow.
>Have CRT monitor and stream yourself working
>Few years later get an e-ink monitor because eye strain, ditch the CRT
>Few years later live in van and own tiny hipster computers working for your buddy
>Then going back to Vietnam and have a desktop setup there as well
>Few years later have a completely different setup, presumably in the US
Despite his digital minimalist perception, I suspect him to be lurking on this site.

Every time I check BST threads I find that people have their desks up against a wall. Does anyone have desks facing the room kind of like this? Any pros, cons to this type of setup?
I'm planning to move soon and the new place has this home office room and that's exactly where the desk is placed so I'm just playing around with a 3d home building app and trying to figure out whether I should move the desk to the wall or not. Imagine that this image was taken from the perspective of someone looking into the room from outside through the window, that's where the light comes from.
>>
>>108000965
I do. I'm not taking a picture but mine is positioned very much like your pic. My window is on the far wall in your example, so directly next to the desk on my right.
I like facing the door (probably a leftover instinct from when I was a teenager worried about parents walking in...) and I like having easy access to the back of the desk to route wires. My computers are on the floor underneath the back of the desk.
I haven't found any cons and I've got no plans to change it. I suppose it makes the desk dominate the room a bit more than if it was against the wall, but not to an extent that bothers me.
>>
>>108001018
That's what I was thinking - if you have someone else living with you who might pop into the room while you're on the PC, you don't have to turn around like a Bond villain, you see the person immediately. And easy access to all the cables. Thanks. I might just leave it like this
>>
>>
>>108000965
I have a corner desk that's not actually in the corner, so it's basically this. Can't really say one or the other is better, you have to consider what you might personally want to do or won't be able to do with either setup.
>>108001072
And this is a major one, yeah.
>>
>>108000965
The most obvious contra is the cable management needed to make it look somewhat clean. You might not care about that. Another potential issue would be a window in the back and sun light directly hitting the screen. If there is no window you're good.

a bit difficult to get a proper angle, if you're sitting in the chair, you see the window to your left, it's to the east so there would be quite a bit of sunlight in the morning but later on in the day not so much.

I had similiar setup but then placed my desk against the windows and after that against the wall. The good thing about this is dividing the space to work place and everything else place. It does eats a lot of space though. In your case it will feel a bit too cramped. What else do you want to place in the room? I'd probably place the desk in that enclave next to the door.

That looks pretty cozy. Yeah, I imagine that the desk in the middle like that kind of dominates the room, like the other anon said.

I do (posted in previous thread but don't have pic handy). I prefer it because it just feels cozier to be able to look out toward the rest of the downstairs, look outside through the windows, etc rather than just staring at a wall. And I don't know if this is some sort of autistic primal lizard brain thing, but when I'm staring at a wall with my back exposed and the rest of the home is to my back, I just inherently feel slightly on edge. Not massively, just a little feeling in the back of the brain.
The big issues are
1) space inefficiency. It works if you have a dedicated office/study/whatever. But if your desk is sharing space in a living room or bedroom, or otherwise in too small an area, you might not really have enough space to do it
2) cable management. Not impossible, just takes a little extra effort because you can't just shove everything on the other side of the desk and have it look neat. Just takes a little more work, you use runners/tipes/hooks on the underside of the desk to secure everything, and then consolidate to a single cable going along the table leg and across to the nearest wall outlet. I was able to consolidate to only two cables coming off from my desk (cord for a switch that powers everything on the desk, and an ethernet cable )
>>
>>
>>108000965
I had a room like that when I was a teenager because it was a dedicated computer room essentially (weirdly think houses don't do that design anymore) but that was the new cool thing in the early 00s. We had a nice big L shaped executive desk that you would face the doors with if you were on the PC.
Problem for me now is my space is just too small and my desk is too big to do something like have it in the middle of the room and not up against a wall. I would assume that is the issue for most people.
>>
>>
>>108002761
>autistic primal lizard brain
I understand this part, even though I don't feel uncomfortable having a room behind my back but now I'm really starting to see the practicality of such a setup.
>>108002958
Yeah, few people build homes now that have a dedicated work room or a home office. Fortunately, this particular place, probably because it was built in the post-covid era, after so many people started working from home, has a home office.
>>
>>108002958
Yeah, and if you have an executive-style desk layout, you effectively have less desk space as well because the backside is "floating" rather than against the back wall. So when it's against the backwall, you can cram a bunch of stuff right up against the backside and it doesn't look shitty and it's not risking falling off. But the same size desk facing outward, and you can't really use as much of the back edges without it looking bad or being impractical. For instance on my desk, I could technically fit a 17" CRT monitor next to my main monitor and my audio stuff, but it would be crammed and it'd look awkward.
>>
>>108003139
>Yeah, and if you have an executive-style desk layout, you effectively have less desk space as well because the backside is "floating" rather than against the back wall.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Our desk was right up against the corner wall and was L shaped. With a drawer on the corner and printer on top and then a giant "desk" coming off the wall towards middle of the room with a drawer under the end of that. There was tons of space for everything.

This setup with the desk in the alcove makes much more sense, even if you have to buy a smaller desk to match. I have the pictured 54'' desk which would just fit. I run 2x24'' monitors, but 2x27'' would basically max out the space available there.

Never be sorry about the centimeters. 144cm is actually bigger than I thought. Basically it's the width of my desk and I have a 55 inch TV on it. There's even gonna be space for 4-5inch speakers on the table. I wouldn't put full size atx tower on it. But still it's a good size for a workdesk.

that's good it's still alive but yeah be careful. My favorite guitar fell on carpet from it's stand from a coord being under it and even after spending $500 for a proper repair and painting it eventually broke again (tbf I'm not sure it wasn't broken again by someone else over at the house) but I was unable to do a second repair with just wood glue and clamps and I ended up having to jb weld it back together to have my favorite guitar back.
>>
>>108006437
That sucks. I know what you mean about the favorite guitar. This Les Pauil is actually my first guitar, I had it since high school. It just feels right. If it will break I'll gonna repair it even though it's a pretty cheap model.
I like having guitars easily reachable because it helps me play more. But I always put them back to a hanger when someone comes over. Because fuck those clumsy bastards.

I'm a NEET and I think even my PC (just the PC, not whole setup) costing 5 grand is laughable since I use it 8-16 hours a day and only upgrade it every 3-5 years.
There's people who spend 50 grand on a car they drive less than an hour a day, 5 days a week, just to get to work and back, nothing more and that's considered reasonable.

Is it though? Because quite often the exact opposite happens where people with money are called "consoomers" for enjoying their money. So if poor people are gonna call better off people "consoomers" might as well call poorfags poor right back at them.
>>
>>108022689
"consumer" here means "someone who has more money than me to buy nice things" if used as an insult
as I already said, unless people who are poor try to make fun of people who can afford things they can, it's unfair of them to make fun of when they just try to live as well as they can considering their financial capabilities

I think this might be a good question for this thread? Top or bottom?
What I'm hung up on is that the sofa on the top does not feel right since its not against a wall. Same with the TV facing the entrance. Something about that feels unnatural.
However on the bottom, the distance between the TV is a bit longer and leaves less room for speakers. There is also a window where the sofa is so sunlight could potentially hit the TV directly whereas the the sunlight on the top hits it from the side.

>the sofa on the top does not feel right since its not against a wall
Depends on the distance between a wall and the sofa. It's usually looks fine when it's 1/3 of the room.
I like bottom because you can rotate the TV to the desk and watch something while you shitpost. Keep in mind that you can put speakers under a TV. It's not ideal but still way better than built-in speakers or a soundbar. You can also place TV a bit further than the wall. You'll need curtains in either case in a bright day.

The crazier ones make more sense if you have some hand health problems. Something like a Sofle on the other hand isn't hard to learn, it's also small so easier to transport than normal keyboards. The keymaps are stored in firmware on the keyboard, they work on any computer, they just present as normal keyboards, you don't need special drivers on the PC.

How does the monitor work for you? Do you code or do similar work? I wanted to get a Samsung G9 which has the same format, but I'm not sure if it would be a major upgrade over my 27inch main 4k monitor and smaller side monitor.

When I get my own place it'll become the simrig monitor and I'll buy something higher refresh rate for the main desk.

It's good. It was good for university assignments and its good when working from home. I've had it years and want something higher refresh rate now though.
I have a kwin script to setup the windows so that I have a central 27" and then 2 portrait-ish spaces on the sides (same setup on work laptop with fancyzones).

After I moved off-campus, I lived in a house with a bunch of asians. One of them had a low table, and a set of zaisu, sort of "chairs without legs".
I quite liked it, and got a lot of work done at that setup.

I wrote my own shell extension for Ubuntu Gnome because I don't want to switch to tiling WMs at the moment, and haven't really found a WM that would be perfect for me. With that extension I also use script to set up my windows, so our setups look similar.
The only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger at the moment is that it would be lower PPI than what I have now, but I'm not sure how much that would matter.
It might matter a bit since my eyes are not as good as they used to be, but seeing people use the monitor in a way that's similar to my usecase moves me more into the direction of buying one.

realest rawest setup itt. One suggestion though, maybe I could be mistaken from the photo, but the chandelier light in the background appears to be a very cool daylight temp light. I'd recommend never using lights like that unless for task lighting in a garage, workbench, studio, etc. For normal home interiors, you want a nice soft warm light in the 2700-3000k range. Otherwise it feels like you're in a walmart or a hospital.

I gotta admit boys I like this folding phone even though it's an older version now... It just does so much for always being in pocket.
Anyone have ideas on how to implement this at a bst with desk & PC? I'm thinking KB & mouse + stand but that may be fucking lame and too busy who knows... When traveling I often just KB and touch but that seems cumbersome at a desk...

That's exactly how mine is. It's comfy as hell but horrible to photograph. Cable management sucks but you don't really spend time looking at the back of the desk so again it's mostly an issue for photos. It doesn't look like you've got space but having a piece of furniture behind you is nice and actually makes the setup MORE space-efficient than desk against the wall.

Funny, but I actually hated it. Most of the time it was just a worse version of a normal phone. And 10% it was nice, but normal phone would still be adequate.
>>
>>
>>108042938
Those folding phones are really cool, and I'd totally buy one, but the specs always suck compared to normal flagships, especially in terms of the cameras (which I use a shitton), and they're outrageously expensive. (At least the Samsungs, which are the only ones I've really looked at.)

And no, I was gay as shit before and eclectic. Hand made quilt in my bed, lots of MCM and empire furniture because it's good quality and cheap. Local artist prints on the wall, that sort of thing. I've shown off pictures of my house before after I removed and before I sold. It just looked like an 80 year old grandmas house. Ie my temporary bedroom during the renovation of the ground floor. ( I tore out carpets and put down red oak floors through the entire house.)

Not as much as I'd like to, I really need something a little faster and longer range to make sense in my area. It tops out a little over 70 and most of the roads out of town where I am are full of people who want to do 80+. I put about 1k miles on it last season but would do a lot more if getting to interesting places wasn't white knuckle full throttle suffering, so I'm looking at options for an upgrade.
In theory it's off road oriented and it's done well the few times I've been on dirt but I mostly ride solo and going out into the wilderness as an inexperienced rider is iffy, and the one really close off road spot was closed all last season and won't reopen until later this year at the soonest, so I didn't manage to do much. I did make a few friends who ride dirt last year though so hopefully I can go out with them.
