I own an ASUS Vivobook 16X and it always had a hard time connecting to internet. I tried flushing DNS, switching to IPv4, changing to 1.1.1.1, restarting the modem and it's still giving me the status of DNS address could not be reached. What should I do?

>detects ads in a video feed
Technically this is extremely easy, you just need to analyse the audio (if any) and match it exactly with a list of known ad starting sounds.
False positives can be avoided by computing a confidence score and analyzing 1-2 video frames to increase confidence. This would work for 99.9% of ads, and the rest can be mitigated with a "Report error" button and another one "Show skipped segment".
The funniest thing is that all smart TVs already have this built in, because manufacturers track your viewing and report it to ad agencies for big money. It's just that they don't expose it to TV owners.

It's dim, only 400 nits. Perfectly usable if you can avoid placing it in direct sunlight.
No USB-C, which makes it a no go with modern laptops – you'll need to use 3 cables instead of one, it's a hassle but it'll work.

Your player must be broken, MPEG-TS is the easiest to play back since there's no headers or metadata to analyse. Try VLC or ffplay.

My dad has a 5th gen i7 desktop I snatched from work a few years ago, now he wants to watch some BDs on it.
Is it as simple as buying a USB bd player or does the computer need some other bullshit to make it work?
>>
>>108012000
Buy the drive, external or internal doesn't matter. UHD discs can't be played back (legally) on a PC anymore, you'll have to use makemkv in some form, either to rip the disc or as a decoding adapter for other players.
Anyway, you'll want to buy one of the models listed here: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634
>dad
It is less hassle to buy a standalone UHD player and connect it to his TV, watching blurays on a PC is pointless due to the small display which most of the time is low res and has poor colors.

Try to ping 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9, see if it works. If it does, then at least your routing is fine.
Your ISP could be blocking outgoings DNS traffic to force you to use their own resolvers.
Do other devices work fine in the same network?

It's not about "network handling it", it's about your chink router doing NAT, network address translation. Also it's likely configured to some limit, go see the settings page.
Theoretically you can get 65535 TCP and UDP connections out of one IP address.

Firefox is now fucking up some video playback for me, especially direct twimg links (video links off of nitter) get met with a 403 forbidden error and won't play the video UNTIL I highlight the url in the address bar and hit enter, which it will then play the video normally
What the fuck is this strange behaviour and how might I fix it?
>>
>>108013567
No. Probably. Chinks never do integration testing and have a high instance of malware in official system software and BIOS. There's is no secret sauce to these things. They're just selling leftover laptop parts, slapped together on no budget. MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, and your typical tier 1 OEMs have the best minis.

Those are most lilely HD, not UHD, so any BD drive should be able to play them on the computer.

Got a new TP Link 9700 and I think theres some DNS related shit going on, because the internet would crap out every few hours despite the cable modem saying all is good (at least judging by the lights). Power cycling would fix it, and putting the thing into AP mode also keeps it stable, but only lets my PC connect. Any ideas?

'pdf with text' gives you the most information in a single file. It may hel to suss out which file is from the original uploader and which ones are generated by archive. epub, pdf, and jp2 are likely candidates.

>backing it up every now and then
Non answer here but do you NEED cloning? Backing up sounds to me like you want to back up your personal files, not clone a bootable OS drive.
(do Windows' anti-features even allow booting such a drive? (assumed it's a Windows installation))
>>108015423

I open up image on 4chan, its downloads the data to my pc using the internet

Why does it start requesting a new download from the server when I go onto click the "lets SAVE this image onto my ssd", its already on my pc. cant it just take the file stored in ram and create a permanent file from that when applicable

You are mixing up things, VPN over HTTPS exists, it's for those North-Korea-tier countries where people have to hide the fact they are using a VPN in the first place.
Proxy is what you configure in the program's settings while VPN is a virtual networking adapter.

Nothing on your system will get infected over transferring the files over, you'd have to run the virus executable in order for that to happen. Besides on Linux none of the files will get an executable flag even if there was a malicious Linux executable in the mix of your meme pics.

probably because of referrals, when you visit a site from a link, the site is told where you came from, while if you enter a link from the address bar, there is no referrer tag. Servers can choose to react to what referrer you have, often used to prevent hotlinking for example

I have some files on an old HDD that I want to restore, but no ways to read it. I'm considering opening this case to see if I can fit another HDD into it.
>>
>>108023584
Highly likely. However a USB to sata adapter is very cheap. If you're trying to pull data off a 3.5" drive that little adapter won't be able to provide the power required to start the drive. It should be fine with a 2.5" though.

I asked this in /diy/ but haven't got any responses.
I'm trying to change my ceiling light pendant in my living room, the current one has all three wires live neutral and ground, whilst the new one only has connectors for two, presumably live and neutral. I had a quick search on what to do with the ground and Checkatrade suggests to trim the ground so no bare wire is exposed and then cover the end in tape. Is that sufficient, or a bit slack?

about 6 years ago, I decided to get off of windows. I tried mac and hated it, then tried Linux and loved it.
for the last 6 years, I've been playing with Linux mint. I feel like I've gotten comfortable enough working in a terminal to try something a little more "advanced".
what i liked about mint was that it was plug and play, most of my games worked on it, and i could still fiddle around to the point where I could customize anything. but it is a Lil resource hungry for my liking, my laptop is an old hp probook 4530s.
I'm considering arch, but I've heard horror stories. any other suggestions? or maybe rather, advice on arch?

I went ahead and looked at this shitty lolcow artists websie yesterday only to find the domain bought out redirecting to a blatant virus giving website. Of which I Cannot blame whoever bought that domain because understandable you'd want to target that artists fans, but after clicking off I noticed my mouse moving slowly and acting wonky. I luckily explore the web only incognito nowadays on all browsers, so for safety I just instantly closed the window and restarted a new window and it instantly stopped. What are the chances a malicious cookie or something like that advanced enough to act like a RAT based localized entirely within a browser instance exists?
>>
>>108030227
Ok I just realized the English in this one broke a bit towards the end.
Basically how plausible is it that a RAT like cookie exists that isn't installed but is functional only within the open window of your browser or browser itself if you were unfortunate enough to browse outside of incognito with cookies blocked.

If I were to send my Crucial SSD for warranty, would I get a replacement drive or a refund (half what similar ssd are now)?.

>If I were to send my Crucial SSD for warranty, would I get a replacement drive or a refund
Probably the former since they likely still have stock. They're quitting the consumer market, so it's not like they'd make much extra from prioritizing selling that drive at 2x to new customers and pushing refunds on warranties for the remaining month of availability.
And if the drive is broken anyway, it's not like you have much of a choice.

Hello 4chan, for the second time in my life I'm thinking of buying a 'puter and I need some help since I'm not a tech whiz
I read through the wiki, went to LaptopScribes like it said and decided on an Asus TUF A15 which is listed there
But when I'm looking to buy one around here (eu) it's like a whole different thing that's the only thing available with that name
Instead of Ryzen 5 4600H it's Ryzen 5 7535HS, similarly with Nvidia GTX 1650 and NVIDIA RTX 3050
And I think it might seem petty or stupid for someone who knows that it doesn't matter at all...
...or absurdly ignorant for someone who knows that it's a huge deal!
But regardless of ridicule, I just don't want to regret my purchase so I really want to know if any of this matters at all?
And does "Likely the best price to performance ratio of any laptop on the market today, also the thermals are pretty decent." apply to this different version of it?

Everything is possible, but it's rare for CPUs to just die like that if they aren't abused in some way. CPUs are generally speaking quite reliable devices.
The main exception to this are Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs which both had manufacturing defects in some batches and also had bad microcode or something which basically resulted in the CPUs slowly killing themselves even under normal use at stock. The latter was allegedly fixed via BIOS updates but if you have such a CPU and haven't updated the BIOS in a long time it's entirely possible that your CPU degraded and / or died completely.

I just started up my gaming laptop after not using it for a month. It did nothing when I pressed the power button, which makes sense since I assume it used power while it was "off" and so the laptop had no power.
What is weird is that when I plugged it in, it turned on, as expected, but the battery symbol in the lower right corner showed that it was already 91%
What causes this? Is it a faulty battery? I know that battery technology is nowhere close to charging that fast. Could it be that the battery really was at 91% and that it barely lost a charge while it was off for the month, and that my laptop simply needs to be plugged before I can use the power button?

I would expect that the battery reading is faulty. Sometimes the readings on those batteries gets screwed up and doesn't report the charge levels correctly. I had a phone that's battery shit the bed gradually. It'd start dying at 10%, then 20%, 30%, etc and last time I used it would pretty much die even at full charge. I had to keep it on an external battery just to keep it on.
There should be ways to get battery statistics, especially it's "health". For instance if the battery was made to be "5000 mAh", a good battery would still be around that range. An aging battery would be 90% of that capacity. So look into ways to find that information out. I think HWMonitor and HWiNFO can report said information. I think there's programs out there that can run a more detailed report on the battery.

Windows crashed and will no longer boot for me.
That's fine, I have a backup SSD with Nobara installed. Runs fine, except I can't edit or change anything on my HDD. I changed permissions, changed ownership, but it still won't let me do anything but view files. This same HDD worked just fine when I used the ssd with linux a few months ago. What do?
>>
>>108036490
You could reformat it as a last option if you don't need the files. Though you could probably still make a backup from the sounds of it. Are you doing all this in Linux? Because it does sound like a permissions issue. I've had this happen with HDDs before, and I've just had to change permissions again. Not sure why, could just me being a dumbass. Do you remember what permissions you've given it?

>This was an HDD with Windows on it, right?
Yeah. Originally I was running Windows 11; that SSD ate shit, so I switched to Nobara; had no problems using the drive. I then switched to Windows 10, and that SDD is working but windows no longer boots, so I went back to the Nobara SSD and now I can't edit the drive.
>What OS are you trying to open it under? Windows as well or a Linux distro like Nobara?
Nobara; when windows was working I had no problems.
>>
>>
>>108036757
I looked into it and apparently fast start up and hibernation on Windows can make it impossible to mount the drive as writeable on Linux, so all you'll be able to do is read it. Seeing as these are usually on by default, I'm assuming that's the case.
At that point you'll need to boot the drive with Windows on it to change those options, but that's a catch 22 seeing as it won't boot. But I remembered that you can probably fix it if you look into Windows recovery options. I think with 11 you can download the whole ISO and you'll be able to select some recovery options. I don't exactly remember how it works. Check out /fwt/, >>107998684 , for more help with that. Pretty sure there's something in the OP, or you can try asking in that thread. If you do go that route you should probably unplug the Nobara disk first so Windows doesn't mess with GRUB as it likes to do that.
Or you could still just copy all the files you want to save/back up and then reformat the whole HDD.

Not the guy, but thank you for the cups.
My cousin caught her 13 year old watching porn on discord. She wants to monitor the kids activity online, but doesn't want the kid to know, nor does she want to restrict them.
As the family techie, she's asked me for solutions, but I've never done such before, and all software I found so far seems to give notifications that the screen is being monitored.
Her main goal is to watch the chats to ensure the kid isn't being groomed, but leave the kid to watch porn (she's a hippie, I don't judge)
Any suggestions?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>108037358
She doesn't want the kid to know she's doing that. Kid has the phone and pc password protected, so she'd rather sneak around back. Also wants to keep tabs on other social media, WhatsApp, Facebook, snapchat, reddit, etc. Basically anywhere the kid can have a conversation.
>>
>>108037589
that'd be quite difficult. probably better overall to just sit the kid down and teach them what to look for themselves. the kid's 13, not 7, he/she should be old enough to understand. ideally you should teach the kid to ask their parents if they see anything suspicious, but that would require a strong trust in their parents which i don't know if they have
there might be software out there to silently monitor multiple chat applications for suspect words/conversations, but that might not be possible on a (non-rooted at least) phone, due to how apps are largely isolated from one-another. you also can't just monitor network traffic these days as most things are encrypted

If not, you don't need any iptables rules.
If yes, keep in mind that it'll only work with plain HTTP:iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128
The command above needs to run on the router, replacing eth0 and 3128 as needed. Squid *has* to run on the same router.

Does it make a difference on what sort of disk drive I try to compress things on? I'm wanting to compress stuff to get more space on one of my backups since for the most part I've just loaded the files as is. I know what kind of CPU you have matters, but what about the disk itself? Will it be faster to compress on an SSD? Will it burn through the remaining writes on the SSD?

Is it okay if an external HDD vibrates a lot if the SMART data says it's in good shape? Do larger external HDD's vibrate more than smaller ones?
I ordered a 20tb drive to replace my 5tb drive from Amazon and it's noisier and I just noticed I got it from a third party seller (QuickDealStore) and I'm freaking out a bit.
>>
>>108045962
SSD will always be faster than an HDD.
Modern SSDs have around 400-600 TBW. You will most likely replace the SSD before even going through all that through normal disk usage.
>>108046006
Vibration is the number 1 killer of HDDs. The more it's in use the more it vibrates, doesn't matter how big or small it is. What drive is it? There's a big difference between consumer HDDs and HDDs used for servers.

>>
>>108046111
Always faster, yes. There are different methods of compression, but it generally goes like this: a file gets decompiled making the file size larger then the file then gets compressed. This is why a lot of installers says you need double the storage space when what you're installing isn't even that big. It's because the opposite happens when decompressing the file: the file gets decompressed in the decompiled state, it is then compiled again making the file smaller.
Going back to disk speed; it matters because both times when compressing and decompressing files you are writing to the drive. Faster write speeds means faster compression/decompression.
>>108046115
No. You can have loud HDDs even if they are new. Usually those external drives are binned drives, which means they are basically drives that did not pass the requirements to be sold as an internal hard drive. Those external HDDs usually fail faster than an internal HDD. Also HDDs are loud, especially the ones that have 7200RPM.

Calibration.
The CPU doesn't just use the RAM sticks. In some circumstances (memory overclocking) it has to first see if the memory can actually run at the stated speed and, if that fails, the CPU starts poking at the memory with different parameters until some combination works.
Disable all overclocking and see if it makes a difference.

I wouldn't accept it. Try a different cable with the same charger, see what happens.
Maybe the cable has some spy shit in it.

Have you built it into a package for iPhone? You can self-sign and install applications through Xcode.

i can't help but feel like it's a little cruel to constantly remind old people of their own mortality by bombarding them advertisements in the mail along the lines of "are you an old piece of shit that's about to die? let us tell you all about how we can incinerate what's left of you so that your last remnant in this world is completely erased! :)"

Yup, and those three came in at the same time. Two different cremation offers and a TV license enforcement letter (the 9th one since I stopped paying).

I'm aware of that, but been using dame cable for a long time; also, not connected to any device, just my old Samsung charger
