>News & Rumors
9850X3D has released to middling reviews. Extremely minor performance jumps at the cost of fairly sizeable temperature increases.
Memory situation unlikely to get better until at least 2027
New DLSS presets using DLSS 4.5, M and L (specifically for ultra-performance). Performance hit consistently significant on Turing and Ampere GPUs, potential for issues on ada and low end blackwell
6x and dynamic framegen coming in the spring
G-Sync Pulsar
ARC B390
PSU and CPU cooler prices may rise up to 10% soon
Nvidia claim *not* to stop production of some Ti variants but low stocks and high prices everywhere.
AMD has announced an increase to the MSRP of 90XX series cards. Expect a minimum $100 price bump from earlier reviews.

This is only comprehensible. The Radeon lacks CUDA and DLSS. It's not bad per se, it's a less pricy alternative for modest gamers, but it's definitely not the same tier as the GeForce. You only get what you pay for.

>>

That's only because some prebuilts are still made from older stock that was bought for cheaper. People were saying the same thing early into the kung-flu+ethereum nonsense but prebuilt prices didn't take too long to rise. Soon enough, prebuilts will either follow the market or have retarded specs like 12GB RAM and most of their storage on HDDs with a tiny QLC drive for the OS.

Linux gaming kinda just sucks in general. But, it sucks more on Nvidia.
But, honestly if you're going to spend hundreds of dollars on hardware, cucking it for the sake of being obdurate about the OS is kinda retarded.
You don't gotta use Windows full time. But at least use it for games.

You don't understand the RAM/SSD situation if you think prices will go down any time soon. OpenAI has basically pre-ordered 40% of the worlds production of silicon wafers. There's going to be shortages for at least a year and even after that they won't drop right away but instead slowly creep back to the old normal. It could genuinely be like 2-3 years even in the best case for prices to get back to something akin to normal.

if they stop going up that's the same as going down with the current unbelievable rate of currency debasement.
>>
>>108022683
That estimate includes the AI bubble popping. We've seen similar shit happen with harddrives. Some big disaster happened and it fucked up the factories. HDDs doubled in price in a short time. The factories get fixed but it still takes ages for the price to actually go back down because everyone is locked into what is effectively pre-order deals that they signed during the shortage. Everyone who makes new deals might be getting slightly better deals but they'll be competing against people who made expensive deals and will enjoy being able to sell at a huge profit margin and still sell out since they can offer a tiny discount. Then someone else gets a new deal and they sell at a slight discount compared to that. And so on. Shit took like 1-2 years to play out.
That's what you're planning on waiting through. We don't even know if prices have reached a peak yet. Someone else could announce an equally fucked deal for even more wafers and it causes prices to double again.
>>
>>108022880
a lot of those "pre-orders" of ram will be turned away by sender and never leave the delivery truck when companies are in bankruptcy/liquidation, then they get sent back to the vendor and dumped onto the market wholesale, huge stock huge discounts.

How do Americans deal with warranty claims for GPUs these days?
I've never actually bought one at Microcenter before, but they tell me I'd have to go the manufacturer directly and that unless I buy one of their protection packages or whatever they are not an intermediary like what I've been used to where I just go to the retailer or call them, tell them my stuff is broken and then bring the proof of purchase and the item to the store I bought it at.
Am I supposed to just call an AIB partner like MSI or ASUS or whoever in the US and follow their instructions and pay the postal service to ship it to their PO box?
Also, interestingly enough out of all the phone numbers to companies like MSI, Dell, or whoever they have for employee use Zotac is the only one they don't have, though I think something on their site changed explaining why based on the garbled phone call I got.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>108023250
'protection packages' or extended warranties are typically scams, ignore them
if its within 30 days retailers will typically take it as a return
past that within the warranty period you contact the manufacturer support who will interrogate you a bit, then they might provide a shipping label but don't count on it
ship it out and then they look at it and either ship you a replacement, or if they suspect you did some retarded shit they'll call you retarded and say they'll ship the broken one back to you, and you can go back and forth about some magnuson moss bullshit or something
also who the fuck makes calls in, just use email

3070 will have better ray tracing and a lot more modern features unless you want the 3d display thing or SLI for some reason which the 20-series still supports
3070 has better RT, rebar support, pcie 4.0, dp 1.4a, hdmi 2.1 though I'd say the power diff is not that great.
I'd personally go with the 3070 given the price difference, but it depends on your usecase and if you actually need that extra vram or if you do rt or ai slop and so on.

I'm taking the chance on buying the this card over the ASUS Dual 5070 since it seems like it uses more heatpipes with a higher mass while staying 2 slots, TPU gave a good review of it with good OC potential. Both are still at MSRP for the moment. Any reasons why I should reconsider?
>>
>>108023293
They're pretty close in performance in rasterization. The 3070 is better with RT like the other anon said. I'd probably save the $60 and just get the 3070. But if you're willing to spend $300 in the first place, you may want to see if you can find a 3070 Ti for that price.

Looks like the cooler on the 5070 Solid is the expected thickness as an MSI Ventus 3X would be on a 3060 Ti, that's how it keeps the 2-slot thickness.
I don't know if the ASUS Dual has a thicker heatsink to the same degree as the Prime on the 5070 given it is 2.5 slots despite being 2 big fans only, but I would prefer the option of at least having a dual slot option if I so choose to revert. But I also might be stupid here if the ASUS card would perform better deshrouded with 2 120mm fans strapped on as opposed to 3 on the Zotac, though I suspect the Zotac would perform better since they got a massive +13% performance jump on the Solid in the TPU review, I imagine it would perform even better if deshrouded.
May fortune favor the foolish as it is unlikely I will be able to return it upon obtaining it.

It needs to be clearly better than whatever GeForce has, and popular enough to sell at its MSRP throughout its production cycle.
The 4090 was rarely priced under its MSRP; some 7900 XTX models were discounted to nearly $700, which is bad business for AMD.
The 5090 almost always sold at above MSRP, or the MSRP for AIB cards didn't really exist.
None of these guys want to sell products to poor or value fags who buy video cards once every 5~8 years.

I unscrewed the 4 screws and tried wiggling the cooler while pulling up for a bit, but it doesn't show any signs of coming off.

so the consensus seem to be that prices aren't going down for the next 12-24 months, so the current options are the following
1. build anyway, burn around $600 overpaying for RAM and storage
2. buy a refurbished prebuilt because for some reason the prices are still okay maybe, and hope it's not a complete POS
3. build anyway, but try to swipe some cheap RAM and storage from a "for parts" listing somewhere, and just use those shitty parts until prices go back down
anything else?

This is a gamble and a waste of time; few sellers are going to offer working SSDs & RAM in their "for parts" listing in this market.
Look for CPU + Memory + Motherboard + Other crap bundles. Newegg is running these sales.
Retailers need to sell all those parts before newer CPUs are released later this year and in 2027.

>who knows how much they've progressed on the GPU part.
There just isn't enough demand to be worth making large Radeon GPUs; AMD made a bad business decision if these chips have to be sold at a discount.
It's not like discounting Ryzen CPUs because of the vastly different sizes & yields.
The 5090 GPUs are cut down GB202 chips; NVIDIA has a Professional/Visualization segment that makes workstation & server graphics cards out of these chips.
AMD Radeon GPUs don't have that higher margin segment in a meaningful size to fall back on.

What's the issue with the fans on Thermalright coolers again? Can I not simply set a curve to account for any annoying fan noise? The difference between a Phantom Spirit 120 and a Be Quiet! Pure Rock Pro 3 here is about 10 dollars. Is that extra heatpipe worth the tradeoff of having allegedly worse fans? I hear the noise profile on the kraut fans is much more pleasant at the same noise level.

I missed the boat on the 5070 Ti sadly so the best shot I had was the $830 before tax MSI Shadow, it was a toss up between the Zotac Solid, Gigabyte WindForce, and ASUS Dual at $550 before tax. Everyone kept telling me along with the AI slop that the ASUS cards are better and all that but my research suggested the Solid had more mass to it (0.96kg according to TPU, ASUS and Gigabyte were around 0.83kg I think) so my instinct was to buy that for more heatsink weight and surface area if the data is accurate along with that stupid light and the number of heatpipes. Having that 2-slot option gives me flexibility too I guess if I wanted to deshroud it with 120mm fans for better cooling and quieter noise though that small heatsink leaves me concerned even if it has 2 more heatpipes than my Ventus 3X 3060 Ti does. It will definitely run much hotter if I try to OC it to 275W, dunno how good of a lottery I would get with UV so it might hopefully mitigate it and keep it at least on par with stock performance at 200W. Though even at 200W OC'd my 3060 Ti does not run hot at all.

PL1 and PL2 should be limited to 181W for maximum rated performance; some boards may set looser power limits.
If you want to tone down the power draw, change the PL1 to 125W.
Z690 or Z790 boards have more CPU voltage tuning options.

>i3-12100f -> i5-14600kf
If you're re-using the i3's stock cooler, it's not good enough to cool an i5-K CPU.
Even a $20 single tower cooler like the Scythe Kotetsu 3 will handle that CPU better.
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rw7scf/scythe-kotetsu-mark-3-6762-cfm -cpu-cooler-scktt-3000
A dual tower Thermalright or be Quiet Pure Rock Pro 3 will be even better.
If you have a dual tower cooler and it's throttling the 14600KF, you fucked up the mounting pressure.
The heatsink might be loosely installed.

I boughted a 5070 for $600 :/
I figured that getting a 2X performance uplift at the cost of a meager 12GB of VRAM is better than not getting any improvement period if we don't get GPUs for the next 3 years, I could be wrong like I was 4 years ago though
I really hope this stupid fucking power connector does not fail me compared to the good old 8 pins

Really not a good time to buy if you're on a budget. Even DDR4 is worth a pretty penny compared to previous prices, and DDR3 systems are weak and probably not an upgrade from what you currently have. Check back in late 2028 or early 2029. Otherwise, pay up, unfortunately.

Should I fuck with EXPO before I install windows?
First time build in 10 years
Thank God it boots
Updated bios from March to Sept 2025 for 1.2.7(1.2.07?) agesa
My first AMD build, 9800x3d
It's idling at 37-40c in BIOS is that good?
And I'm going to report back after I grab dinner and install the GPU
I am running off iGPU for now
Sadly I bought ram @600 USD in December before I bought anything else and didnt get qvl I think but it's 6000cl32 2x32 Corsair, made sure not to get an Intel only kit

I believe that I can just work more hours to make up for the extra cost, I too am due an upgrade and I don't think its fair that I have waited this long just to get shafted an extra $900 or whatever the price hikes are.
I like to believe that I can make any situation work, but realistically, maybe buy your RAM/SSD on finance so you can at least avoid seeing a huge lump sum leave your bank, even if its still the same price, never take anything over 0% interest.

People love to mash statistics together like this to say "uhhh yeah on average its weaker" and then you use a PC with the thing in it and the FPS is always better on the more expensive hardware.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>108026544
Not really. Obviously it sucks that the top tier hardware is absurdly expensive but there's plenty of second hand hardware that are almost ten years old that can still be used for a lot of decent games and various productivity tasks. If this happened 20 years ago we'd be talking about having to give up on even having 3D graphics and playing videos. Now its
>oh wow you can't game at 4K and you have to settle for 1080p? Fucking tragic my man.

No, people clearly buy based on their budget.
Cheap motherboard, AMD, and whatever GPU that they can afford, the current trend is to put it in a square, mid factor case with two window panels, intake fans placed where the drive bays used to be, and in a white design. People are also putting figures in their cases. Pic related.
I want a new PC man.

i had the same doubts
is it worth spending the money
should i waitfag for another fucking year to spend even more on parts 1 year from now
just buy it
1 year into current line up
things are pretty stable all around

just buy it

I tell myself that if anybody really cared, they'd enquire as to how I spend my money and sit me down and budget with me.
I have an extensive family who seem to negatively judge me for how I spend my money, but they don't actually confront me or offer to help me cut back on impulsive spending.
I kind of feel like they care more about saying "I told you so" after catastrophe than actually trying to nurture a positive outcome.
But you are 100% right, I'll find ways to obtain more money to cover the cost of this PC. I really don't care what people say, even a $5,000 PC is peanuts compared to the amount of money people spend on clothes, holidays, cars, over the 5 years or whatever a PC will last you.
They don't know what they're talking about.
>>
>>
>>
>>108026900
When people get mad at you for spending money on things, what they're really mad at is that you have money to spend on things you enjoy and they don't.
I don't understand why my boomer ass parents need to spend 2 grand twice a year to go somewhere like Turkey, Spain or France for two weeks, but that's what they do, and they insist it's important, and they'd be depressed without it.
Now, if I had that money to randomly go somewhere nice for two weeks, would I do it?
Yeah, probably.
>>
>>108026900
Family will often get angry at you spending money on yourself.
>>108026933
is exactly right if you took that $5000 and gave it to them for a vacation or whatever they wouldn't bat an eye if you then spent $20,000 on a PC just for you
>>
>>108026900
It's a social phenomenon. Most people don't know what computer do so they write it off as a waste of money. Young Gen X, Millennials and older Gen Z actually needing to learn about tech was an anomaly and things are returning to the retarded boomer baseline.
