This. Pixel 8 or later with GrapheneOS is the play. No bloat or spyware by default and app compatibility is great.

Depends on what you want to use your phone for
Don't mind the extra cost, and better hardware and specs? Samsung
Want a decent flagship phone, slightly smaller cost and specs but great software support, and can also install GrapheneOS? Pixel
I've had my pixel 8 for over two years now, and since I'm a heavy user I have replaced the battery but otherwise it runs like the day I got it, using GrapheneOS on it too

I literally have never owned a smartphone that discharges so quickly and overheats as much as the Pixel 8. I'm not sure how it competes with newer Pixel models, but this phone made me question why I didn't just buy an iPhone instead. The only redeeming thing about this phone is official Graphene a support.

You should buy a series of dedicated electronic devices that individually fit your needs. Wanna play video games? Get a Switch. Wanna record voice memos? Get a Zoom recorder. Wanna do math? Get a Texas Instrument calculator. Wanna take photos? Get a DSLR. Wanna play music? Get a dedicated media player. Wanna make music? Get a groove box. Wanna watch movies? Get a Blu-ray player. Want directions? Get a GPS. Wanna read books? Get a Kindle. Etc etc etc. Just keep doing that until you find yourself in a situation where you never want a smartphone. I guarantee this will enrich your life 10x over anything a smartphone could offer.
>oh but a smartphone could do all of those things in one small packag—
Yeah, I'm sure it could. But let's be honest, you'll use it for wasting time on 4chan, Twitter, YouTube and porn. It's specifically designed to encourage as much mind-atrophying consumption as possible because there are so many companies that rely on monopolizing your nice and personal information. Say no. Do not buy a smartphone. DO NOT BUY A SMARTPHONE.
The internet should be confined to a single room in your house that you must visit and leave in distinct sessions.

pixel will let you install grapheneOS so i plan on getting one of those next.
samsung phones are nice, even the budget ones, but the power saving features micromanage the fuck out of background tasks so you'll have to frequently re-enable adguard and caffeine and any widgets you have on your home screen.

I only buy pixel (currently on 7 since launch more than two years ago) because of the unlockable bootloader and the fast updates for everything including firmware (not many do that btw), I wish I could use something else because pixel batteries are shit, always have been, even on my galaxy nexus and nexus 5.
I bought it for under 500€, now that they start at 899€, it's in flagship territory without flagship features like 1-120Hz display so fuck them, my next phone (2028 I hope) may not be a pixel this time.

Graphene are supposed to start supporting some non Pixel brand. Currently on Pixel 7 and waiting until that happens. Might switch if they're less shit than Jewgle phones. Or not, I'm definitely not giving up Graphene either way.
