Does AI have an issue with admitting it was not able to collect enough verified information to give you a real answer? I've been trying google's AI out on getting video game gameplay advise but it seems to freely mix up sources including other games and real life analogs rather than say I'm not sure or can you provide more information so I can narrow it down. If you give it a sourced correction it will admit it just "hallucinated" information but it never prefaces that their info was not ironclad to begin with.

It's a word predictor bro it doesn't reason and it cannot know if anything it wrote is correct, it will always present things as correct and with confidence because it is trained on data that does the same

even if you verify every process and whatever is running under svchost you still can't be 100% sure

Never bought a laptop before, don't know what to look for. I just want something from a good brand with good support/warranty, good thermals and no oled display for light gamedev (blender/ue5) and gaming. RAM and SSD is not important as I already have it from a previous build. Thought about MSI, these 2 models:
https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/gaming-laptops/283735/msi-raider-16 -hx-ai-16-intel-ultra-9-275hx-rtx-5 070ti-32gb-1tb-win11h-raider-16-hx- ai-a2xwhg-667ca.html

That depends on a bunch of things, devices have different ports, not all cables are the same speed, same thing with network devices, if you mean internet connection specifically then your speeds might be capped by the plan you have and so even if you have everything else setup for higher speeds your ISP just won't let you.
But ethernet, like pretty much all wires, is more stable connection it doesn't get fucked with by other wireless signals and there's not really any signal drop off unless you're going to run a ridiculously long cable.

Is the IT Dusters CompuCleaner Xpert computer duster good? I'm tired of buying canned air and I was wondering if this thing will last me a few years. I live in Europe and I can't find a DataVac/MetroVac in my country.
I know about those small chink fans (like woflbox) but most of them use batteries that you can't easily find replacements for. And some of the wired ones have problems with the cable, they short out, or they overheat and light on fire.

I thought my laptop had a hardware issue but now I'm thinking it's just a software issue and I figure some smart ni/g/gas might know. Maybe even there's some way to fix it.
So, when I scroll using mousewheel on discord's standalone app (not web browser version), often it leaves behind artifacting and duplicate ghost elements on the screen. Pic rel is a very common example where the emoji bar and message highlighting are duplicated on the message I was hovering before the scroll and after, when the app is designed to only highlight the current one. The artifacting breaks up sometimes in ways that looks really ugly (like half the emoji bar showing while half vanishes) and I thought maybe it was a GPU issue.
The thing I noticed that gave me a eureka moment is that I was using my old laptop today and it happened on this device too, when it never did in the years I used it normally. I suspect some windows setting I use is causing this, maybe changing the text size under Window's accessibility options is causing the app to malfunction? My eyesight has gotten bad and yesterday I tweaked several of these types of settings on my old laptop to match the new one, and also did security updates (old in Win10, new is Win11, issue is on both). I can't imagine it's to do with the updates since it's on both OS and not widespead because I can't find other people talking about this, which makes me think it's connected to accessibility settings and hopefully benign and not going to damage the machines or a sign the machines are already damaged. For reference I've tried changing plenty of settings within discord for things like turning hardware acceleration on and off, and the glitches happen both ways.
Any clues or explanations would be nice, or maybe someone knows enough about tech and discord to know about this obscure bug. I have searched and really couldn't find anyone else talk about this exact issue.

AI will always try to appease you and answer your questions. You can see this happen even with insanely simple stuff, pic rel is a classic where it will often just make up a number for no real reason if you ask it how many of a letter is in a word. Another classic is asking if there is a seahorse emoji and to show it to you, there isn't one but often the AI will be trapped in a loop of presenting you an emoji while claiming it's a seahorse, then saying that was wrong, then showing you another and claiming this is the real seahorse, over and over until it runs out of room.
If you ask it "what is 2+2" it will search the info it can access and find you the answer. If for some reason the answer it finds is wrong (like sourcing a reddit user that posts 2+2=5 as a joke) or it can't find an answer, it will basically always just make something up that fits the scraps it did find. If it found no scraps it'll be a complete guess essentially.
If you do want to ask it things you don't plan to verify yourself, you should at least always type "verify this" or "I think you are wrong" because the success rate skyrockets on a 2nd attempt. I think this is because the AI sometimes gives a lazy low effort response to what it sees as an easy question (like the number of "c"s in the word tomorrow" and then if you tell it that was wrong it will actually take a moment to research it, even if it really should have done that before providing an answer the 1st time.

malwarebytes is one of the better ones in my experience, and the free version is fine, just make sure if it's not auto-running that you update and run it pretty regularly.
something I've found important is checking any sus downloads you're doing manually. like, if you pirate a movie file, run that shit through https://www.virustotal.com/gui/ before you open the file bro. You just upload the file and very fast it will check it with a huge list of good virus checkers. pic rel is an example of just 2 of the scanners thinking something is sus, and you can look further into it from there if you want. typically if something is bad it'll light up quite a few red ones because most people putting malware in something are using known malware instead of bespoke stuff. but if you care about the machine, and virustotal has even 1 site tell you not to trust it, just consider if it's worth any risk on whatever file you got.
>>
>>
>>

>>108959641
deep scan when you first get it and any time you're worried and want better peace of mind. regular scans regularly are nice too, I don't personally do them daily but I do them any time I've used a new program or downloaded something that could contain a virus (most file types). no reason not to turn on options that will also check for other types of bad files like rootkits, it'll make the scan take longer but if you have a virus you want to know, right?

if you get your updated bios from the manufacturer's website or equivalent, and have reliable power (aka it isn't gonna shutdown over like a 3 minute period) you might as well update it. for laptops this is trivial because of the battery, if it's a desktop and you're super paranoid you can use a backup generator to power it for that time if you need to, I hook my PC up to one for bios updates just to not jinx it.
the vulnerability only matters if someone tries to take advantage of it, but if they do it's gonna be free entry as a known vulnerability. bios is basically the deepest layer of the machine so if they compromise that they can brick the machine, and frankly if they just brick it and don't do something worse using that control you're lucky. if you never pirate anything or download files you're not sure are safe, you'll likely be fine either way, but I'd just update the bios if I were you.
>>
>>108959745
this shit is the worst. make sure you never toggle on any of the shit like "remember me/stay logged in on this browser" because if they're getting past 2fa they probably have session tokens you allowed the website to generate.

Its a lenovo laptop and I never updated the bios and it has a vulnerability that was fixed like 2 or 3 years ago. I'm afraid the bios update will just break shit. I never pirate anything but I do watch shit on streaming sites.
>>
>>108959822
lenovo will have a dedicated bios file for specifically your machine on their website, download it and put an extra copy of the installer on a flash drive if you want to be truly sure:
1. Download the latest BIOS and even the 2nd newest version if you want directly from lenovo, verifying the exact model # of your machine for compatibility
2. Copy the 2 BIOS installers to a flash drive formatted in FAT-32, in the root folder (aka it's not in a folder, you see it when you open the flash drive)
3. Make sure your laptop has plenty of power (no 20% battery BS) and plug it in to the wall
4. Run the BIOS update of the latest version. It's scary but it's over in like 3 minutes
5. If it breaks the machine somehow (less than 1% chance honestly), you're fine, just insert the flash drive and you can install the BIOS from that by selecting the BIOS file on boot up.
6. You even have a backup BIOS installer if the newest one is magically incompatible despite being for your exact machine, but realistically you'll never need that

they're really confident everyone wants to be on it then. you can download 2 copies of the file if you're super paranoid and want to avoid the .000001% chance your computer somehow fucks up the download of the 1st copy, but really you'll be fine.

>want to get one for more security/control form my home and just set my ISP router to bridge mode
Gigantic neckbeard option here but you could consider building a Linux box for the job. It's kinda hinky trying to find a decent Wi-Fi adapter case you want to run a nice Wi-Fi access point with it. But just saying.
The list of software required goes like
>NFtables (for NATing)
>DHCP client (for obtaining an IP from your ISP's network)
>DHCP server (for serving local leases (optional (networking itself works without a local DHCP)))
>caching DNS server (for serving DNS locally (optional, your clients can use any DNS they wish))
>hostapd (for hosting a Wi-Fi access point)
Systemd handles everything but NFtables and hostapd, for non-systemd setups you also need dnsmasq and some DHCP client.

If my USB ports switch to powersaving mode or whatever it is, basically when they just stop responding or things disconnect and reconnect at complete random, is that because my PSU is too weak or is something else?
>>
>>
>>
>>108964379
Sometimes it's just like
>Plug something in
>Disconnects after a few seconds
>Pull out something in another port and plug the new thing in there
>It works
>The port that disconnected originally is effectively dead for the rest of the session
That's on a good day. Other times it just cycles through connect and disconnect and makes that annoying noises rapidly. Other times things will be going normal and it'll suddenly decide to disconnect something I'm using.
I've updated the bios and chipset drivers not long ago, and I think I turned off power management, but I'll double check that.

When a file is ONLY available for premium accounts, you can't really bypass it.
If you're poorfag you can use one of those "premium downloader" systems where they proxy you through one of their accounts to download the files from the servers they stole from someone else.
If you're only sort of poorfag you can use one of those "premium downloader" systems where you pay to download premium files from their proxies with accounts, and these usually work better.
If you're not poor, just get the premium.

your resolution aligns and misaligns with cell shading regular patterns, producing interference waves of a wavelength 1/c where c is a common denominator between a and b for wavelengths 1/a and 1/b for the cell shading and your screen. or something like that idk

aliasing... or moiré, or is it moiré because of aliasing?
in any case, it's because it's a scan of a screen printed page (or one with a fake screen printing effect, doesn't matter), it's a bit hard to explain, but it's like your screen has a fixed number of pixels, and if the image has a lot more detail than your screen can display (esp when it's zoomed out), then only some information from the original picture can be displayed, naturally, but what happens here is that you're taking a repeating pattern and only displaying some of it, which can result in an effect which looks like you've zoomed the pattern in
it's kinda hard to explain in words, it's better to look up visual examples, but basically it's because of a mismatch between a pattern in an image and your screens' pixels

the mismatched patterns create constructive and destructive interference at regular intervals, resulting in a 'zoomed in' appearance of the screen printing/half tone dots

You guys are already a bit paranoid, so installing random.exe's with a "run as admin?" prompt will constantly spike your cortisol and it will always feel dirty. So switch to MacOS, but only stick to the AppStore, or switch to Linux, but only stick to the main repo and verified packages.

Switch all your accounts to a new email provider / fresh email address. Escape the botnet, you are not in huge scammer databases anymore. Have multiple: job, gaming, throwaway, banking, social media. without any other context besides "computer", yes, i would assume they meant the CPU. while computers have other processors, the CPU is "the main one", and without clarification i'd assume they mean that.

What is going on? I have a western digital blue SSD 2tb that i bought a year or so ago. it was fine at first but chokes now. it caps out at like 100mb read write per second. it's kinda unusable. I know the blue's are slower but my HDDs are better than this and are actually usable. the SMART thing says it's fine. what is wrong with it? I need more space and buying a new ssd is kinda out of the question atm. I'd like to be able to use this thing

How do I share a comic I bought on Amazon e-books for kindle?
There's this comic I started reading because of a /co/ thread we had recently but some of the issues are not available anywhere for piracy. SO i decided to bite the bullet and buy the issues so I could share it on the usual places. However there's is no way to download them anymore and I was not able to find a script that I could use. The only one I found relied on the download button to be there (it was literally just a lazy way to not have to click on every download button)).
So is there like some sort of ytb-dl script for this kind of thing?

If its in a similar position to the one in the pic then probably the other inductors in parallel with it are enough to limp by on. IIRC parallel inductance works roughly like parallel resistance so you'd probably see a voltage drop in that part of the circuit from the lost inductor, but you got lucky enough that its still within tolerance for whatever that part of the circuit can take I guess.

Belatedly I realize I recognize that particular configuration of inductors and capacitors in that picture. In that specific instance it's being used as part of a noise filter (probably for whatever that coil is to the left of it). Loss of one of the inductors would just make it a bit worse at suppressing noise, maybe leading to the occasional extra bit flip of spurious interrupt, possibly the occasional random BSOD.

I just got accepted into a mainly programming but also media rendering school so I can work in cybersec and engineering in the end.
They told me I should get a beefy "gaming" laptop or a Mac. The only con is that it takes place in France and most of the prices feel like a scam... Any references, recommendations?

Is there an objective, measurable advantage to using the bass/treble knobs on my active speakers or the amp knobs on my bookshelf passives over just using the built-in EQ in poweramp? like maybe some circuitry fuckery that makes the knobs apply a better EQ or something I dunno

So is Verilog the #1 go-to logic simulation program out there? Because last time I messed around with this stuff I used Logisim and it's so horribly out of date it's not even funny. Program doesn't even have options to change the scaling of the display so you can actually read text.

it depends what you want to use it with, if it's just some ok speakers it probably doesn't matter at all. you get into snakeoil territory with that audiophile stuff very quickly.
I use a $200 DAC/AMP with $150 headphones and the difference in sound quality compared to the chip in my $200 mainboard is negligible at best, the AMP part is definitely making a difference though. If you have very expensive speakers or headphones I'd just go for it if you got the budget anyway
>>
>>108977210
thinking a pair of q acoustic 3050c and for my amp i was going to get a fosi za3. the main thing im worried about is hiss at idle (cant remember is that total harmonic distortion or signal noise ratio)
>>
>>108977223
>hiss at idle
I'd just try the AMP on its own and if it's bad, buy the DAC. Problem is, you can also get that with an external DAC, might be the USB if it's powered through that or the power plug.

Is there anything particularely wrong with the m5 macbook airs that reviews tend to gloss over? I'm looking for a device for essentially getting away from my desk. I'll still be doing all of my gaming and work stuff on my desktop, so I really only need the second device for media consumption and browsing on the couch and in bed. Ideally it would also last at least 3-4 years and not require much fiddling. I don't mind fiddling and messing with my desktop, but I'd prefer my secondary device to just work.
I have t450s with linux on it, but the screen is hot garbage and the fan makes this anoying slight whistle noise even at low speed, so it pretty much goes unused since a couple of years. Currently I use a 2021 Fire HD tablet with the amazon shit removed, but the battery is starting to go and I'm getting increasingly annoyed at using mobile apps instead of having desktop programs.
Reason I'm considering the M5 air is because I can get it through a program at work that means I get about a 55% discount on it. I can get windows laptops as well, but the selection is limited to current models only and most of them seem pretty big.
>>
>>
>>108977321
you sound a lot like me, i got an m4 macbook air because genuienly the state of windows laptops is atrocious. being fanless was my main draw to it, and from my day to day use ive not had any problems whatsoever
having a fanless m4 has been great, i love this laptop, cant wait until alpine is supported on it. might even buy an m1 just for that reason.
ama i guess lol, iirc the only differences between ours are m4 vs m5, and base storage is higher on the m5
>>
>>108977388
Thanks. The fanless design is also a big draw for me. Having had that one whiny fan, that shit was so annoying that I just don't want to deal with it anymore.
Do you do anything other than browsing or watching movies on yours? Ever had it overheat or slow down a bunch?
Any particular annoyances coming from windows/linux? Things like folder structures, settings, programs behaving differently and such?
How do you find using it as a secondary device along with a windows/linux main device? Supposedly apple wants you to get into their ecosystem and stay there. But I'll probably try and not get "caught" in their stuff as much as possible, I guess.

i use stats packages, jamovi, and have a bunch of tabs open while doing research

the sheer locked down nature and the DE are fucking annoying but i can adapt enough. youll likely have to make an icloud account

>the sheer locked down nature and the DE are fucking annoying but i can adapt enough
Could you elaborate a little what you mean with this? Any specifics?
I've never used a macbook extensively before, so I'm not sure what to expect. I know you've got less options to customize it, but I don't really know the extent of it. Granted, since it's not going to be my main device I'm willing to let a lot of things slide.
>youll likely have to make an icloud account
Slightly annoying, but what's another account at this point

If it's important for good pc health and to protect from damage during outages shouldn't a UPS be built into the computer? Or that it's at least recommended to get one on the side when buying a computer. Never heard it mentioned before

Well, that's good news. Thanks for linking the dock as well, I've had Ugreen in the past, they make good stuff.
Thanks for answering my questions, I appreciate ya. OS peculiarities aside, the air does seem like it's exactly the kind of device I'm looking for. I'm gonna give this shop from my job's program one more once-over to see if there's a hidden gem windows machine skulking in a corner somewhere, but I doubt it. Otherwise I'll just have to figure out what ram/ssd combo for the air to go for.

Probably doesn't belong in /g/, but I was playing DMC4 SE on Windows and the in-game benchmark gives you an uncapped frame rate and the cutscenes are also uncapped, but gameplay is locked to 120. Is there any reason for this other than old jank Nip game logic? The benchmark looked fantastic in motion at locked 240fps.

My computer is obsolete and the graphics card is breaking down so I can only play old shit for the most part. I've been holding out for a steam machine, at first because I heard it's going to be good, but the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea of being rid of Windows forever.
A: Is there a ballpark release date and price for the steam machine? I trust Gaben more than Gates any day.
B: I got no learnings of electromagnetic hoozits. I look at computers or components on the build your own general and go cross eyed. What is a good way to shop for a prebuilt computer? I don't know any nerds irl I could bribe, is that a service people offer cheap?
Which would you do, keep playing old stuff and hold out, or bite the bullet and buy a new one? I can spend about 2-3K
Pic related, not me but that's what it looks like when I play something more complicated than Deep Rock Galactic.

it's most likely just overheating. dismantle, repaste, profit.
pcbuilding is easy enough even teen nigger can do it. if afraid - get some shitcanned pc for cheap and practice on it with screwdriver. if you can dismantle nad put back together in working condition then you are good to go.
>>
>>108981435
I called a local repair guy about getting it cleaned and he said it probably wasn't overheating since the PC itself isn't rebooting to protect itself.
>dismantle, repaste
I'm not sure what you mean. Just tighten the screws and such, or get a deep clean?
>pcbuilding is easy enough even teen nigger can do it.
It's not the physical building, it's knowing the difference between components. People mention various things and it's like oh boy this one has 200 megaturds and this one has 210 megaturds but needs a 400xv12 peepee drive. IDFK, It's like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher. nothing makes sense to me.
When I was a kid my dad had a 386 and then he bought a 486 later and it was better because it had 100 more 86es than the old one did, and then Pentium happened and it all stopped making sense. That's about the maximum of my technical knowledge.

Are you asking can you turn your laptop into a Wi-Fi client bridge? Yes, you can do that but it will require neckbearding. (and it's likely it can't act as a literal Ethernet bridge but something similar, a NAT at least)
>>108981200
Actual real deal bridge requires hardware support from the Wi-Fi adapter. Thing is not all Wi-Fi adapters can spoof MACs.
>>
>>108979638
Easiest way in my mind (on a windows or linux environment) is to set a static route from the laptop to the desktop and route traffic from the desktop to the actual gateway.
That said you can get $10 pci cards.

I've never heard of the term neckbearding in this context

AFAIK no OS out there provides an easy method for turning the system into a client bridge. Thoughever the reverse - a hotspot - is a common feature. (doing a hotspot also requires hardware support)

I'm hoping you guys will be more helpful. I recently copied some files (photos and videos) from different sources.
