Accurate. I work for a book publisher, and I was just told to move back to Illustrator and InDesign's shitty UX because they had to redo some stuff I had made on Publisher when I was on leave.

I sometimes make business cards and flyers for businesses and the local printer here demands InDesign files because they have to make the "final touches". One place still uses Quark.

My honest review after 3 years of repeated use:

Affinity Designer > Illustrator
Affinity Photo < Photoshop
Affinity Publisher >= InDesign

Shared observations:
- All 3 take a little time to learn if youre used to Adobe. They have some different terms and methods to achieve similar features in their respective programs. Might feel like "xyz with extra steps" at times. But very customizable interface. If you know your needs, you'll be just fine.
- I like Designer a lot :)

Exceptions:
I like Photoshop more than Affinity Photo (AP). AP feels more like Lightroom if it had a bit more of photoshops freedom around the time I was using it.

Worth it if you want something you pay once for with a consistent ecosystem.

what makes designer better than illustrator?

i had to move from pc to mac and i couldnt pirate photoshop in here so i bought the lifetime thing of affinity and it takes a learning curve, but its quite great now

No. It's the better option for non-professionals, but they have some serious work to do before they can fight Adobe on its home turf. E.g. Affinity don't support RTL text. At all.

I love it, it is fantastic. It SHOULD be the standard. Much easier to learn than adobe stuff. Feels better to use.

It can do the basics but you will eventually run into stumbling blocks. Designer has no vector brushes. There are also no filters for manipulating vectors or vector tracing. It's getting better though with the recent pathfinder tool integration. There were no major updates this year so Canva might not be heavily invested in it.

Not having to pay subscription. If you like using plugins however, then it's 50/50 determinate.

Illustrator's plugins don't work in Designer.
But, Affinity Photo can use Photoshop plugins. So far, it's hit or miss with the ones I'm troubleshooting, but the G'MIC plugin is fairly good.

In Designer the pivot point for curves is placed in the middle of the spline. This renders the whole thing useless.

Fucking hell this is frustrating. Maybe I can bite the bullet on just renting Photoshop for $35/month but I really dont want to lock my work into a subscription service, especially when Im so broke. I guess I try to suffer with GIMP more.

You crackers need to learn how to pirate. I've been using Adobe products for years and never paid a dime. I wish I could also download a car.

They have announced a major update that will be released on October 30. Many design influencers say that Affinity has gathered a lot of information and has taken ideas and feedback into account.

Since being acquired by Canva, there seems to be more money and resources available for development. It's definitely exciting to see what comes next.

I also don’t think they will introduce a subscription model—but who knows.

Just use DaVinci Resolve. Hovid edits all his videos with it, and it’s also about 90% free.
