I have an 8tb hdd and i haven't had a problem, i share it using dlna, and watch with skybox through local wifi, and i only had issues when it was formatted with ntfs (i use linux but initially i formatted it ntfs thinking i'd care about accessing it with windows), when i reformatted it as ext4 everything improved: the video playback through wifi, but also torrent downloads and uploads went way faster too.

i can consider it, even though right now it's a mess that kept growing since i wanted something fast that would get the job done and i kept adding stuff, and it's pretty specific for my particular setup.

initially it was just a script that created previews of the videos in 1 image. it's like those previews that are a grid of sampled frames, but for vr so it would crop to just the left half of each frame. then i'd go through the previews (with a regular image viewer) and delete the images for videos i didn't want anymore, and then ran another script that would delete the videos that didn't have the matching preview image. that was good for a while to delete unwanted videos, and quick to code, so a good first step.

then i made a godot app that would show the previews, and i can select the individual frames from the preview grid that i'd want to keep (it's just a grid of clickable squares that change color when marked as selected), resulting in a bunch of segments of the original video that then would be cut from the original, and the original deleted later. basically it looks at sequences of adjacent selected frames, figures out which start+end timestamps would those frames be in the video, then uses ffmpeg to cut from the original video. it uses ffmpeg parameters such that the cuts land on keyframes, and using the same codec/format, so the cuts aren't reencoding anything and it's actually pretty fast. there's an app called LosslessCut that does that too, but VR videos are so big that it's a bit uncomfortable to use, and this tool of mine makes it more friendly.

i spend a while selecting the bits i want to keep, then i let it run overnight and i just free'd a few TBs of stuff. i'm pretty picky about what i like in videos, so i delete like 50% of the videos i download, and from the ones i keep, i cut them down to like 10-20% of length, and even then i delete a bunch of those too after a while.

i also use another system that helps me get rid of whole videos in a low effort way, so that i can delete them after watching them for the first time, since half of the videos i don't like as soon as i see them: i mark the videos i want to delete in skybox as favorite, later i connect my headset to my computer via usb, then i run a script that i vibe coded with chatgpt, that takes the skybox database from the headset, finds the video ids i marked as favorite, matches them to the files in the drive, and deletes them from the drive. this i do pretty often when the drive fills up, it's very quick, and it gets the job done until i need to do all the other stuff with the video trimming which is a bit more time consuming.

With the "scale" issues, DeoVr has been a game changer because of the Horizontal Offset setting and Autofocus.
