Charles Victor Thompson was the 597th person executed by Texas since 1976. He murdered his ex-girlfriend and her lover in Houston in 1998 and also became the only death row inmate in the US in the 21st century to make an escape from prison. Thompson was a Houston native born June 13, 1970 but little else is know about his background; he'd worked in several blue collar jobs including HVAC installation, installing home security systems, and pest control, and had no criminal record prior to the murders.
In 1997, Thompson began dating 38 year old Dennise Hayslip and moved into a house she shared with her son, co-worker Lisa Gonzalez, and the latter's two daughters. After a while, he became increasingly erratic, violent, and obsessed with the idea that Hayslip was cheating on him. He was only occasionally employed and essentially lived off the two women, throwing a fit when they asked him to contribute some income. One time when Gonzalez caught Thompson shaking Hayslip in a fit of anger, she tried to stop him but he slammed her to the ground. She tried to call police but the phone didn't work and she later found that the cord was ripped out of the wall. After a while Thompson and Hayslip separated and moved to separate apartments.

On March 16, 1998, the three went to a bar together. Thompson was upset and said he didn't want Hayslip dancing with anyone else. Gonzalez saw her three days later and noticed that she had visible bruises and her lip was split. A little bit after that, Hayslip met a bartender named Darren Caine and began dating him. On April 29, Cain phoned his friend Tony Alfano and asked if he wanted to come to the bar and watch the NBA playoffs, but Alfano declined the offer. The next morning, Cain called back to report that Thompson had threatened him over the phone, He added that he was abusing Hayslip and he was going to come and help her.
Kathy Page, one of Hayslip's neighbors, awoke in the early morning of April 30 to hear her dog barking and someone yelling. She could hear a female exclaiming "Stop! and "Help!" Page called 911 and went out to check on Hayslip's apartment. Her and Cain were outside but neither had any physical injuries. However, Hayslip was obviously upset and telling Cain she was sorry for all that had happened. Thompson then walked out of the apartment yelling expletives and calling her a whore. Page then noticed that Hayslip had a black eye. Cain was telling Thompson to calm down and he replied "Do you wanna die, motherfucker?"
Deputy Bill Coker responded to Page's 911 call and saw the three standing outside, nothing obviously wrong. Thompson's face was bruised and swollen, but he had started the fight and none of them wanted to file charges so Coker told Hayslip to just leave and that he would arrest him for trespassing if he came back.

Around 6:00 AM the same morning, Page's son was leaving to go to school when he heard gunshots. Shortly afterward, Page heard someone knocking on her door. She opened and to her horror saw Hayslip on the ground, blood trickling out of her mouth as she gasped for breath. She motioned with her hands that she'd been shot. When Coker came back to the apartment, he found her sitting in a pool of blood, a gunshot wound to her right cheek and a lot of blood coming from her mouth. Coker asked if Hayslip was shot and she nodded yes. He then found Cain dead in her apartment. Hayslop was evacuated to a local hospital during which her brother asked her if Thompson did this and she nodded.
Meanwhile, Thompson went to his girlfriend Diane Zernia's house. Zernia was getting his daughter ready for school so he waited for her in the living room but then nodded off. After the girl left, Zernia watched the news and saw a report about the shooting. When Thompson awoke later, Zernia joked about his black eye and said "I hope the other guy looks worse." Thompson said "He does, I shot him." He explained that he'd been beaten up in a fight so he left the apartment where it happened to get a gun, after which he kicked down the apartment door and shot Cain four times and also Hayslip. Thompson added that he could shoot Zernia too if he wanted and pointed a gun at her to prove his point. He later threw the gun in a creek.
Thompson asked Zernia if he could call his father, and his father came and picked him up from Zernia's home. His father took him to the police station where he turned himself in for the shooting. Thompson later called Zernia from jail in an apparent attempt to influence her to change her testimony about why he returned to the apartments.

Hayslip underwent emergency surgery but doctors were unable to prevent her from asphyxiating and she fell into a coma. She was declared brain dead by May 5 and her family agreed to remove life support, but she still lived four more days. Autopsy of Hayslip found that the primary cause of death was blood loss resulting from her tongue being lacerated by the bullet; the tongue contains a large amount of blood vessels. Thompson was charged with first degree murder; a cellmate in the Harris County Jail reported that he'd also been trying to hire other prisoners as a hitman to kill off Diane Zernia and prevent her from testifying against him.
At trial, the defense argued that Hayslip would have survived her wound and died as a result of medical malpractice, but a medical expert testified as mentioned above; the tongue has a lot of blood vessels and the cause of death was almost certainly bleeding from its injury, therefore the gunshot wound was the primary cause of death. A jury found Thompson guilty on April 14, 1999 and he was sentenced to death.
His defense appealed the conviction and he got a re-trial in 2005 but the jury upheld the original verdict and he was again sentenced to death. On November 3, a few weeks later, Thompson was being held in Harris County Jail prior to transfer to the state's death row facility in Livingston. Using several items smuggled in his legal binder, including a handcuff key, fake ID badge, and a set of civilian clothes. Thompson later claimed that a sergeant had found a previous set of smuggled clothes but had merely confiscated them as contraband without reporting the incident to the district attorney's office.

That afternoon, Thompson went to a visitor's room to meet with his attorney. As soon as he was alone, he slipped out of the handcuffs and put on the smuggled civilian clothes. Thompson then walked toward the exit, flashing his fake ID badge—which claimed he was a state investigator with the Attorney General's office—to at least four jail employees. He bluffed his way past the final guards at the front door by walking calmly. Thompson then hopped onto a freight train and rode to East Texas, finally making his way across the state line to Shreveport, Louisiana where he stole a bicycle and pretended to be a Hurricane Katrina refugee. Some Good Samaritans took pity and gave him money, but on November 6 he was spotted outside a liquor store while trying to use a pay phone. Police arrested him and brought him back to Texas.
Thompson appealed his conviction four times during the 2000s and four more times in the 2010s. He completely exhausted his appeals by 2021 and the Supreme Court also refused to intervene. He was executed by lethal injection on January 28, 2026 after a last meal of scrambled eggs, grape jelly, oatmeal, applesauce and biscuits for breakfast and fried chicken, pinto beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, sliced bread, swirl pudding along with beverages of punch and water for lunch, and expressed his regret to the victims' family. Thompson became the first person executed in the US in 2026.
Dennise Hayslip was buried in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery outside Houston.

Protip: Pigs don't actually know the law and bodycam videos have exposed how retarded most actually are. I'm sure if asked he couldn't tell you what the legal definition of trespassing was here.
