How is he so underrated? It's hard to argue he isn't a top 10 General OAT

Bump.
If he were alive today, he’d easily destroy the US military

There is an entire slew of forgotten military geniuses from the 17th and 18th centuries. My favourite is Maurice de Saxe, a german protestant who worked for the French and was really fucking debauched.

Anon that started the thread here, its truly a shame how neglected the Age of Gunpowder before Napoleon is. I'd say Dodge's Gustavus Adolphus book (which actually covers several great captains of the era and has a misleading title) is the best work on this era. Turenne is the best in my opinion, but Condé, Eugene, Vendome, Marlborough, Gustavus and Villars are some other great captains of the era.

Turenne was the master, his death was like a tragedy, singlehandedly crossing the vosges in winter and then recovering all of Alsace.
What I do find interesting about this period in particular is how various noblemen with an interest in soldiering would often offer their services to other states, something that would be unheard of today.

The Sun King really paid with interest for rejecting Eugene's service

Eugene already had received his tonsure before he decided on a military career, which I find very funny.
Churchill, the other half of the allied brain was ironically also a volunteer in Louis' 1672 campaign when he was at the siege of Maastricht.

>The bongs decide to attack while leaving their enemies behind
>Cut them off
It's a pity he died in his 50s, though considering his lifestyle it wouldn't be unexpected, though he would have made for a far better opponent for the likes of Frederick.

For me it's Marlborough
