If you're there to work-- you attend class regularly, on time, and you put effort into your homework, nobody will bully you. In fact, you will shine. In my recent experience: the class began with 18 people or so, by the end about 7 were showing up. On any given day, about a third of them wouldn't have made any attempt at the homework, and a few will have spent less than 30 minutes at it. Most that attend will be on time, a few will show up whenever. Those same few will leave to use the bathroom, and return 60 minutes later, if at all. If you are a determined student, you're frankly a welcome relief to the instructor, regardless of skill.
You'll get practice drawing large and with charcoal. If you're lucky and have some determined fellow students, you may learn some thing from their own attempts. As for instruction, some teachers are pretty hands off with the introductory classes. I'd say you'll benefit most from the structure of the class, producing regular large and mostly finished works. If this is something you can manage at home, you can probably save yourself the cost. There are instructors that are rigorous. Look up the class schedule and go meet the instructors, see what students are doing, look at what work is around. They'll probably be fine with you just showing up for a look around, but it is easy enough to email beforehand.
Outside the class, on the walls of the art dept. I'd see work go up and come down regularly. There were a variety of paintings that weren't very impressive. There were also some large charcoal drawings: portraits, animals, that were surprisingly expert.

Everybody starts out posting shit art. You're art's never going to get good, it can always get better, it never stops. At no point are you going to look at it and say to yourself 'this is good enough'. No matter how good you get, you will never be happy with your own work.
At some point you have to realize that the art isn't for you, the drawing is. The art is for the audience, and they're happy to get just about anything.

So it shouldn't even matter then? Hell, in cases like these people tend to worry about others finding out you're into that thing at all rather than the fact that your drawings didn't always look good.

Can't really gauge it since I don't know what you're talking about specifically, but I have a feeling they wouldn't actually care a whole lot about some sketches. And if it won't make any real impact there's no need to rush it - those with more than a passing interest in the thing in question will stick around long enough to see them even if you only share when it's "dead" again.
And couldn't you just post the ones you consider good enough? Maybe redraw or polish a few.

No you’re right, I never did mention I want to post content to this fandom when I get over my rustiness, and these past sketches have mostly been a light feeling out as to how these characters and things even work, and coming to understand their personalities. it’s not just the skill that’s rapidly been developing that made the old stuff feel weird. i was going to make a number of less sketchy things i felt better about, that weren’t just my learning process, and post, but sort of ran out of time because the interest hit just now. I’m talking so much..

I learned that eminem wanted to be a comic artist and he actually drew pic related but in the thread one of the comments said that he just "slavishly copied" some comic book art and that you can't tell his actual ability from these because of that

No. It’s good to use lots of ref when studying perspective, it’s hard and it’ll take a lot of time to draw them from imagination so be patient with yourself. Draw them from ref and from imagination, see what went wrong from imagination, and go from there.

i just had it pointed out to me that apparently i hold my pencil like an autistic retard. i guess youre just supposed to pinch it with your index and thumb more or less but i kind of smother my pencil with all five fingers while angling my hand really hard, like to where the back of my hand is facing the top of the page
should i make an effort to correct my hand posture? im not new to drawing at all so it might not be worth it to bother fixing my shit but im curious if it could benefit me in some way. posting my work just cuz

It’s okay to use them in pieces if you want to. It’s really up to you. My most recent piece is just a compilation of different references. Like I said, at the end of the day, just keep drawing. Don’t worry so much about when you are/aren’t using reference and focus on creating as much art as possible.

It’s a decent basis, just do it until you feel comfortable visualising forms in 3D and can do it with reasonable accuracy
Doesn’t need to be perfect, you’ll continue to improve with time as you construct more complex forms anyway

The skeleton is a hard one. Just take different approaches. Sometimes use lines to draw the rib cage. Sometimes use cylinders. Sometimes draw it as one, large mass. Sometimes just go straight into it. Point is don’t rely on one method

So i have been following Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching tutorial and have been grinding organic shapes for cross countour lines.
What are some traps to avoid being stuck at a particular subject? I'm pretty sure many people have gone through this road without following it perfectly,so i want to avoid pitfalls.
First issue i have currently is that despite practicing the rendering part beforehand,i kind of can't apply the textures to the organic shapes.

In your tablet settings. adjust the 100% point to where you don't have to press that hard to get a max pressure stroke. Different tablets and styluses work differently so there's no one size fits all. Plenty of pros leave it default, or have it so you barely have to press hard at all to get max pressure. (pic related) Adjust the curve so you can get smooth transitions from thin to thick and thick to thin again. Depends on how you grip and hold the stylus so you'll have to experiment yourself. Don't make the curve too extreme so that you can't get the full range of strokes.
For different types of brushes, you might want different pressure curves too. Depending on the type of brush you might want a lot of or none so adjust the brushes pressure curve accordingly.

I relate. I don't like the lack of agency of AI, I don't want to be reliant on anything except my own hands, but I also hate the romanticization of struggling and "the journey", I just want to skip the deviantart beg phase and be as good as my idols now. I know it probably says something about my rancid personality that I would have literally zero regrets skipping le journey and instantly being perfect. People often bring up effort and time as something that gives art value over AI slop. Maybe I'm an ignorant pleb, but I think that's dumb. James Baxter can draw a perfect walk cycle in 3 hours while another artist could take 3 months to draw a walk cycle not even half as good, is the beg's work inherently better than Baxter because it took longer and they worked harder on it?

It's gonna be frustrating, but your limit for now might be short. Mine used to be 10-15m. Nowadays I can do 4-5h with no issue (could probably more, but my brain starts hurting by then).

This might be a bit of an odd question, idk if anyone will have an answer for it, but I'm currently teaching at an academy, mostly kids who just want to doodle, but there's this girl who wants to improve with backgrounds, yet no matter how I try explaining it to her, she's incapable of understanding perspective. Have you tried having her copy simplified drawings like picrel? Or maybe if you give her a physical cube and make two drawings yourself, one with correct perspective and one with incorrect perspective, and have her decide which looks correct.
Basic concepts like lines getting closer to each other as they move away from the viewer or the size of objects changing how close they appear, I think even if explanations don't work just observing and drawing it freqently with corrective feedback is enough to start to internalize the patterns.
Also, this isn't directly related to your question, but if she wants to improve at backgrounds, there are other ways. Drawing from nature has less requirement for perspective than drawing buildings and such, and instead you can focus on teaching about values. Girls tend to have more aptitude and interest for colors, so it's something to consider.

Same here. Tardwrangling SD is a whole separate and stupid skill unless you have low standards, and Illusion's games are always lacking in some way even with mods taken into account, so I'm done fucking with them.
And now there's so much I want to draw and no idea how to do (most of) it, let alone the skill required (or knowing how to cut corners just right so it still looks good). Don't even care about recognition.

These are some of the exercises I recall doing as a self-taught middle/high-schooler. The river one especially is where I think it clicked for me very early on. If she isn't able to grasp "rigid" perspective, perhaps soft, organic forms are the way to go? Then when she starts to get those, one way you could gently introduce the concept of planar perspective is to draw some "halfway" forms, such as partially round/organic forms with a few flat faces (eg a rock with a flat bottom), cylinders, cones, wireframe organic forms.

You could use the sheet of glass trick. Set up a stack of books near a window, with a little mark for her chin. Get a pen that works on glass and ask her to shut one eye and trace some of what she sees. If the location is suitable, you could line up students from the class outside at different distances. Then talk about the drawing and ask her what she notices.
Also, drawing a foreground figure or two is a far cry from filling a sheet of paper. Sometimes getting kids to experiment with backgrounds is a simple as giving them media that allows them to fill a page easily.

I usually do full grayscale render, then a new layer set to color, and use that to lay some basic colors. You can do additional layers or shit like clipping masks and other blending modes to add other hues, and even a few more layers on normal mode to add extra details directly with color.

Beginner retard drawing baby here. I am currently following the upside down drawing exercise in DOTRSOTB. A massive issue I am having that I draw the lines either longer or shorter than they should be, and also at the wrong spot. Anyone got suggestions on how to keep the proportions in check?

I use FastStone Image Viewer, so I just use it's batch convert for compressing images. XnView is good too.
Handbrake for videos, use a modern codec that can take advantage of your GPU/CPU. Which one specifically depends on your hardware and how long you wanna spend compressing.
Or just buy a NAS with high-capacity drives, storage is pretty cheap these days.

Check your local used listings, you can get barely used ones for cheap. Wacom, XP-Pen, Huion, Xencelabs. Any modern one is good enough these days, just get medium sized one or larger. The small ones are cramped and bad for your wrist. You could make do with 1366x768, if you draw in full screen mode so the UI doesn't take up so much space. But a cheap 1080p monitor would be worth the upgrade.

Anyone know of an easy way to consistently add fake subtitles to still images? I don't want to have to bake a lossless 1-frame video then make a subtitle file and load both with a video player. If the image is always the same size and the subtitle is always 1 line, then it is trivial to keep it consistent with an image editor, but it may not be the case that the image is always the same size.

Whats up with drawing on a drawing tablet? I'm pretty happy with my lines on paper and pencil, but digitally seems insane to me, it's like a complete skill reset.
Also, am I misunderstanding how to use or set up the CSP brushes? They all look extremely bad in comparison to what everyone else uses in csp.

Two things
1. it's screenless table to so you need better coordination than with just screen tablet or pen&paper.
2. Tablets are generally more slipper, screenless less so than screen ones, but still, it will make your strokes worse before you adjust.
You can use stabilizer, but you can also train a little bit. Basic stabilization should be enough.

digitizers really suck for some people because of this hand-eye disconnect. i tried getting used to using one for close to a decade, never stuck. getting a display tablet was the best thing i ever did for my art, it was just an immediate improvement in every aspect.

How do you paint you drawings in CSP? I tried doing it like I'd do it with a pencil or something but I either lightly go over lines or the color looks weird because of pen pressure. I guess diabling pen pressure for color might help, but what about drawing over lines?

Hey,so recently i have started watching Charles Hu videos of Dynamic Sketching. Beforehand i have watched Peter Han's videos. Peter Han recommends Staedler fineliners for drawing holding them in an upright position.
Charles recommends Faber Castell Pitt artist pens because they are different as in you can use them in tilted position as well,compared to something like Staedler's pigment liners which can be used only in an upright position as Peter Han uses them.
What's the difference between them as in why the difference and how can i tell from a pen which category it fits into?
The Staedler fineliners' nibs are starting to wear down,some are almost gone,is there a way to "repair" them somehow to keep using them? I'm not too keen on just throwing them away with ink in them.
If i'm looking to buy permanent pens in a webshop...how can i tell the difference?
Recently bought calligraphy pens but their nibs are way different(which was expected) and draw quite broad lines by just using them normally:

I'm open to any suggestion on what kind of permanent markers to buy that draw narrow lines between like 0.05 - 1.0mm and can be bought cheaply in large quantities from aliexpress or temu. I have already a bunch of HB,4B,8B,etc. pencils so i don't need those.

Pick a main color, in this case you can use the skin color that you picked in a more low saturation style.
Then paint a line with the color and proceed to pick colors you want and cross a line between the main color and lower the opacity (for colors closer in range, pick a stronger opacity compared to further down the color wheel). I made a very crude example here with my finger

Lately I've been wondering about how people break into the game industry. I've wanted to be a character designer my whole life, is it feasible at all by just putting out fanart nowadays? Okay,this might be a retarded question. But what's this phenomenon called when my eyes are close to the paper i'm drawing on something like ~25-30cm and when i finish something even a simple organic form it looks from okay to shit looking at from this distance.
However when i hold out the paper/sketchbook in my arms at max length it looks way better?
Is it simply because the forms look smaller? Brain fills in details? Something else?
Also should i worry about this,perhaps change something so i don't "ruin" the forms by drawing in unnecessary details and so on?

I'm going to buy the Perpetual license for CSP. Firstly is Pro good enough? I don't plan on doing animation I just wanna draw. And secondly, should I wait for 5.0 to come out or buy 4.0 now and then the upgrade pass? I can't not digitally stop drawing until it releases in a month or so but if there's a free decent program I can use as a substitute until then that would be great.
