Something bothered me about TableGuy's challenge. Not even professional illustrators can make 52 illustrations a year, and those who do make art that quickly can't be called illustrations.

I don't want people to feel bad if they can't meet the challenge expectations, because I think they are literally impossible without compromising something. It is setting up a self-sabotaging goal.

Suggestions:
1. Change to 8 - 10 illustrations a year

2. Originality focus: 4 - 8 illustrations a year plus ~4 supporting pieces a month (concept art, character design, interior design, etc.)

3. make 52 pieces but don't call them illustrations, or call it "finished pieces" over quality. Even the twitter artists who make a piece every 2-3 days do not always have backgrounds on every piece.

1. It's difficult to the point of self-defeating. Even if you reached the 52/year metric, you wouldn't be learning you'd just be pumping out art. It's either impossible, or a waste of time.
2. I purposefully looked for artists that posted all their work, and looked back several years (up to 2011) to ensure that was a reliable metric of how long their illustrations take. This collage took me 4-6 hours to make because I was using multiple sources. For example Ask only posted 4 illustations on pixiv and twitter, but her Weibo had 1 per month.

I love illustrations and would love to do a 5 star challenge but I just do not think this one is possible. I get irritated when I feel like someone is asking people to do an impossible task. Feel free to prove me wrong though, TableGuy (if he reads this)

and, I also think it's important to be clear what the goal is. Is it productivity? Is it improvement? or is it quality?
It seems like his goal is to just make a challenge no one can do.

The challenge is really for myself and another buddy. I posted it on /dad/ in case anyone else wanted to join along. I’m ok if you dont join anon 7861001, you may choose your own destiny.

FYI my primary motivations at the time were:
1) i have to stop drawing girls floating in voids
2) i paint too slow, i need to speed up
3) i was stuck in study hell for the past year. I need to train imagination drawing
4) I also didnt make any finished pieces last year

Originally i was going to make 100, but my friend said 50 was more reasonable. Maybe “illustration” carries too much weight. I more or less just meant an imagination drawing, top to bottom with no reference and a background, color, ink. No loose sketches. No half baked ideas or floating characters without purpose. Maybe it’s a page of a comic. People can easy make more than 50 pages of a comic a year.

You know your own quality and your own limits. I think that is part of the challenge. You have to pace yourself. If you can only make 10 max effort illustrations in a year then how do you cut corners so that you can do 50? I’d change the wording from illustrations to drawings, but i cant edit challenges.

I’ll try my best to finish the challenge, i couldnt finish the 1k figures because of life obligations etc etc. I would probably submit something like pic related which took me 2 days, but I hope by my last drawing the quality will have noticeably improved.

However Loomis is a good place to start.
Keep drawing spheres and cubes.
Once you can confidently construct those you can worry about getting the details right. At this stage it's not about quality it's about volume. Draw relentlessy. Draw unendingly. All day. Every day. Draw until your eyes hurt. It's gonna take a huge amount of tenacity and busywork to escape the early stages.
I wouldn't even think about critique for now. There's plenty of time for that later. Just focus on volume.

I think it's pretty serviceable. There's a sloppy quality to it that I think comes from how rough and thick your lines are. I thought it might have been pillow shading but you're just on a huge brush size. Maybe try some thinner brushes out. and some white highlights. A little pin lighting would go a long way on your more simplistic style.

I had recommended King to do a side by side test of painting the same ref with both a soft, and hard brush. Mainly because he said he thought a soft brush would make value studies easier.
So I decided I shouldn't a some backseat drawing fag, and show an example. Though I didn't quite do the same type of study. It was nice though, I learned a few things.

Honestly I mindlessly reached for the hard one for this new painting, while it'd be so much easier with the other. But whatever. It's matching the colors where the real challenge's at.
