you use the side thats rounded down/without edge and slowly fill it up and give more pressure to darker areas and try to blend it with the lighter ones. obviously for effect you'd want a cool reference with some chiaroscuro, for a better effect. then, if you have a scanner, you can still adjust the contrasts to make it look better/closer to reality and not a cheap scan (i use a cheap 7 year old office-document scanner). i havent drawn in a month or so though, so here is an older one of mine to see how i do it.
