In regards to the file name, my best guess would be that ZUN was still getting a feel for the new tools he was using to illustrate the windows' era games, since his art got back to normal by Touhou 8 methinks. Doesn't explain how it's shit in other respects, but explains the particular look Touhou 6 has in particular since his art has always been kinda like that.

Also helps that everything else about Touhou is good

Sometimes it's just luck, but Touhou also had gameplay, story/lore, and a soundtrack to back it up. On social media plain designs/mid art can get a lot of attention if there's interesting content to go with it, even if it's just little lore dumps or comics. People aren't as inclined to get attached to character designs in a vacuum. Would you like to show and tell us a little about your characters?
