Welcome to /flag/ + /extraflags/, a comfy 130 IQ general for Extraflags users that combines your passions for geography, maps AND travel by using the Extraflags extension

Threadly activities include travelposting (local trips are welcome too :^), urbex, wilderness exploration, hunting for radioactive minerals, eclipse and aurora hunting, (extra)flag collecting, map filling, cycling across Europe, other autistic activities and overall funposting

>What is Extraflags?
Extraflags is an open-source browser userscript that lets you choose regional flags, like states and provinces, to add to your already existing default country flag.
Turns out it's very well suited for travel posting because you can flex with the ultrarare (or at least, nice) flags you're travelling to, rather than using it as a reddit flair for tripfagging in other (low iq) threads

@Manhattan
the flag in this post >>218148611 (El Omraniya, Giza Governorate, Egypt) is present in the recent flags API but is not downloaded by your flagdump script. try yourself
>>
>>218298134
nah it actually showed that on my car
>>
i have a few flags for (You)

Chiusi

quite fittingly, every electronics store was closed. this prevented me from buying a mouse and making flags during the following 5 hours train ride
>>
Città della Pieve

crossing the border into Umbria just because i can
>>
Cetona

every single corner of this region is so easily scenic it's ridiculous. this valley, called Valdichiana, is one in the system of valleys connecting Florence and Rome. Goethe, in his "Italian Journey", described this valley as one of the most beautiful agrarian landscapes he had every seen. I can't disagree indeed
>>
it doesn't snow too often at these latitudes btw, it was a lucky coincidence that the day happened to be the day i had to go to Rome
>>
Sarteano

slightly stepping into the other side of the mountain and barely seeing the landscape on the other side before the cloud came in and made a freezing whiteout
but no worries, that happens to be the area of Monte Amiata, world famous cinnabar mineralogical locality. aka, we'll definitely hear about that again here on /flag/ :^)
>>
bonus flag from my midnight train changes: i had time to do a little tour of Bologna. I even had time to investigate local geology (the hills behind Bologna are rich in gypsum, a common but pretty mineral, and many monuments in the city like the leaning towers are made of its rock Selenite)

hence, we'll definitely hear again about this province too :^) not only for minerals reasons, but hiking too: the high Bolognese Apennines were so stunning when i passed through by train, all snowed, that now i want to go there

also, that's it

the recent flag endpoint returns the newest post for each flag, which in this case was the deleted post. it didnt get country data scraped before deletion so the dump script then ignored it.
i just changed the API to not return posts without country data. now >>218148611 is returned, which the script uses.

When you read about the alms giving, all sources tell you to be respectful and keep a distance from the locals and the monks.
In reality there are no locals, just endless lines of chinks.
Smoking and spitting on the same pavement the monks walk with their bare feet.
The only pro is that China is basically financing the Lao monks.

It could be kinda cool to keep the logo/flags originals in the repo albeit still in a small size (160x110 size maybe?)

Because sometimes when I try to find the original logo of a flag in the repo, it either takes a long time or I just can't find them at all.
>>
>>218510970
a free gitlab repo has 10 GB of storage then you have to pay. my local archives are already at 9.6... i could compress and discard a lot of stuff but it'd still be a lot of work
cool idea thou. we could open a new repo if anything

i opened a folder on mega.nz https://mega.nz/folder/et5jTIBZ#es6nlh3D7dGQ_6-Vgcewbw
and added my archives of Algeria and Spain. my archives consist of random backups done at various stages of the processing so they can be messy, if/while i will organize my archives/make new researches i will upload the originals too

if you make an account i can allow you to contribute to the folder so that you can upload your archives too, we have 20 free GBs, better than any git hub or lab
>>
>i will upload the originals
*more originals, the zips i uploaded are already all the originals i have for those countries
>>
>>218557328
That's awesome!

What do you think the standard size should be? We can keep them like this of course too but maybe having a standard size can lower the space they take
>>
>>
>>218563323
>having a standard size can lower the space they take
the sPain zip is taking up 200 MB, which is about 1% of the space we have. How many countries are there, 200? But almost all of them have WAY less flags than Spain

tldr; we don't need to compress anything for now and even if we do i can just run a script on the heaviest folders, nothing you have to do manually
>>

this Baveno pink granite monument might not look like much but it's one of the 8 main station of the italian geodetic grid. it was used as a triangulation point in the 1800s and as late as the 1970 by the Military Geographic Institute to make their topographic map (i spent countless hours on that crap to find new mountains to add to the global database and other things)

Yes, the tentative ones as well. Sometimes the tentative ones don't have too many details on the UNESCO website, so my favorite website for that is worldheritagesite.org

Sometimes some sites have more than one location so it's very useful for that too. See pic-related Danube Limes

>let me guess, you teach English
Exactly
>and do you speak Uzbek already
Nope, I am not even sure if I want to lol. I took 2 years of Russian at uni so that's very useful as well.

those are for native speakers, paco
now go shovel my snow
>>
>>218803759
You need a Bachelor's degree; the field doesn't matter. Then you need a TEFL. Don't get an overpriced one; there are many online courses for 10 USD. The recruiters just want to see a pdf file of the certificate; they don't care where you got it from. You'd also need some sort of test (TOEFL, IELTS, etc) showing your proficiency level.

>>218807491
That's gorgeous

>>218833620
I'm not a native speaker retard. In fact, the majority of the English teachers who teach in other countries aren't.
>>
if the majority of English teachers who teach in their own countries aren't why wouldn't that apply in a different country

Oh damn that's interesting. Why aren't the Stadtkreise in Zürich in the repo, like how Sihlfeld is under Wiedikon?
>>
>>218863573
>You know what you have to do when you go to Switzerland
*Liechtenstein lol

>Stadtkreise in Zürich
good question. they don't really have flags, so i used the Quartiere instead https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtteile_der_Stadt_Z%C3%BCrich#Statistische_Quartiere_und_Zonen
they mostly have their own flags (CoA=flag in CH) or are part of a larger kreis having a flag, like Altstadt. the only exception being Sihlfeld so it was filled in. Vexillologically speaking, I think it's cleaner this way
>>
yeah... way cleaner
>>
>>218875988
>*Liechtenstein lol
Yeah I meant like how you did a detour once into Vaduz and Schaan

>they don't really have flags
Ugh that sucks.
>>
>>218882669
Very nice
>>
>>218882763
>Yeah I meant like how you did a detour once into Vaduz and Schaan
correct assumption, but i since found out there is a direct flixbus to Vaduz from Milan so at this point i gotta take advantage. there WILL be more Switzerland and Austria regardless, no worries
>>
>>218882871
Gotta love Flixbus (Some of the lines on my map have multiple routes like Vienna-Zagreb and Zagreb-Maribor)
>>
>>218886231
i need an OSM-based website to track all the railways and roads i've ever done. GPS chronology sucks...

btw that very same guy discovered and then climbed the high point of Uzbekistan, of all countries. He must have discovered, confirmed or surveyed at least half of all country high points

it just takes one dedicated autist to change the history books

Which flags do you think look better when rotated to be vertical?
>>
>>218905568
Any vertically striped flag or flags like >>218905044 that have a vertical bar next to horizontal stripes.
>>
>>218905568
For me, it's Turkey, Israel, and flags with a triangle on the hoist like Palestine and South Africa

Top one seems like the House of Enriquez, descendants of a brother of Henry II of Castile.
Bottom one definitely is the House of Haro, who were Lords of Biscay in the Middle Ages.

I wanna do research based on the correlation between Flags per Capita (FPC) and GDP per capita.
>>
>>218970408
who could them be :^)

>Flags per Capita (FPC)
every years or so i run a script to find out how many flags are in repository in every country. when i'll be done with fr*nce i will make a new one, for now these are the results of a couple years ago

so that part is already covered unironically
