Everyone is quick enough to avoid a spear if you have any basic understanding of how to dodge. You just have to wait for for the attack then move your body away from the attack and grab the spear then close the distance and punch him in the face. A spear isn't really very good in one on one combat. It works better when you have multiple spearmen who can cover for each other.

That's why you need to just keep distance and the speartip following him around. Keep enough distance from your speartip that you can make a quick correction if he attempts a side step and you are solid.
