when do you actually pronounce the "y" in ょ? i see that for words like ちょう (町), you just pronounce it as chō, not chyō.

BUT for words like きょうと (京都), you DO sound the "y" for the ょ. AND since we're here. when do you NOT sound the う??? is it only after there's an "o" sound that ya don't sound it?

Its literally the same and both are valid since people speak like shit just like in any other language, if anything you should learn how to speak like shit if you want to sound like a native

You should ask in /djt/
Anyways, ょ has the y pronounced sometimes but not always, and う is always silent at the end of a sentence, like あそこに黒人がいますから行かないよ there is no う so you do not pronounce it, but if there was you would've not pronounced it
Hope that helps

きょ kyo
ぎょ gyo
しょ sho*
じょ jo*
ちょ cho*
ぢょ jo* (this one is very rare)
にょ nyo
ひょ hyo
びょ byo
ぴょ pyo
みょ myo

Hope this helps.

/djt/ is lame, there are a couple of bullies that always hang out in there and will make fun of you for asking legitimate questions (they have tripcodes)

this
also, about the う, you pronounce it always, but following an o sound it makes the sound longer (roughly twice as long) instead of making an u sound
its the same when い follows an e sound
its important because vowel length can cause a change in meaning like hoshi (星) - star, and hoshī (欲しい) - to want, or koko (ここ) - here, and kōkō (高校) - high school
