I'll give you a little hint. You can run any picture through Google images and get 99% accurate results.
For example:
>呆然としていたら、突然、あの巨乳三姉妹が襲いかかってきた!
>あああ、乳がカオに当たって気持ちイイ。
>てな事を言ってる場合じゃないぞ!
Thank me later.

also u should know that my students are fucking stupid even after hundreds of hours of english they still suck. so even if such stupid students can speak japanese fluently then you can do it.

you should add in something like renshuu or jpdb to your anki or satori reader to get in more practice of small sentences. or even a book like genki.

you need to see characters in different fonts, forms, and contexts, to get a better idea of the "true" nature of it

use multiple fonts on your anki cards, read more street signs and handwritten things

then it will become easy

Welp, like I didn't have enough things to study and memorize...
Every time I see kanji with weird fonts, or variations, or in the "traditional way" (like the start of Muramasa), I panic completely, asking myself if those are kanji I know but can't recognize, or kanji I haven't studied yet. Usually, I try to get the reading from the contest, but like >>50636979 >>50636985 where 襲い掛かる was written as 襲いかかる with a weird font, I get completely stuck...

I do need to start reading books. Do you have any suggestions? Textbooks must be painful.
I did Core2k a couple years ago and have been working through an Anki grammar deck lately so I have a decent foundation.
>>
>>50637149
Read anything you're interested it. There's no real level you need to start at. Any light novels or mangas you have an interest in?
>>
>>50637149
start with yotsubato
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpd85y_iTxY
>>
>>50637112
hm maybe you have autism and cannot abstract things. can you picture objects in your head? if thats the case i think just more practice might help. look at calligraphy online or artwork, or read through promotional materials for things or magazines, tons of different fonts everywhere and you will get used to it. it will get to a point where you dont need many details at all thats how people read tiny computer fonts even on highly pixellated displays
>>50637149
it's me the person u replied to, textbooks arent boring imo because you're learning the language. how disciplined are you? if you're just doing 2k you probably have grammatical gaps, so something like genki is a slower pace but good for self learners i think. but honestly you can use something like renshuu which is free and teaches you grammar anyway for a cost of zero, but less detailed than a textbook.

you also didnt say whether or not u know pictographic languages. if you dont, it will take a few weeks of studying before it clicks. i couldnt memorize characters for shit until about 6 weeks into studying then it became instant. now i know tens of thousands but mostly simplified chinese forms but there are many similarities to kanji.
>>
>>50637158
Yotsuba sucks, both as a manga and as a beginner resource.
>>
>>50637181
>hm maybe you have autism and cannot abstract things. can you picture objects in your head?
I've never been able to picture objects in my head... Is that autism-related, for real?
I just thought I was an unimaginative person...
> if thats the case i think just more practice might help. look at calligraphy online or artwork, or read through promotional materials for things or magazines, tons of different fonts everywhere and you will get used to it.
Ok, I will...
>>

>>

>>
>>50637205
>Is that autism-related, for real?
it's a neurodivergent thing and it can be related to autism in some people because of their inability to abstract beyond literal things. but thats ok you just need to consciously study more variations and you be fine. remember that even divergent japanese can read stuff so you can do it, too.

good luck you will be fine dont worry just study and trust the process. language is one of the things your brain is specially wired to acquire.

Love being able to say I'm winning these threads lol
>>
>>50637181
I don't know pictographic languages. I probably know like 80-100 kanji just from seeing them so much but I'm no good at identifying radicals and whatever.
Should I study kanji specifically? everyone has always recommended against that from the advice I remember.
>>
>>50637243
you should write them all by hand with correct stroke order, with a pencil and paper.

you should also learn the basic meanings of them, but dont worry about all the different readings, you'll pick up the readings through vocab.
>>
>>50637218

I passed… N4

Okay, okay, I know there are a lot of you already being far ahead in studying passing N2 - N1 and such (and you deserve the praise for putting in the hard work!)

For me this was nevertheless and important milestone; as

a) I skipped N5 (more on that later) and
b) for the most time, I was stuck on my studying

First of all, in all my years of learning, I never learned Kanji. Full Stop. Not because of ignorance, but because I thought since I mostly speak to my friends in Japanese, Kanji would not be helpful at all (I was wrong), so I set a goal in March 2025 to apply for the N4, if I feel confident by July 20025 to have all the Kanji available for N4 (according to the books) and then a bit more for the test in December 2025.

I added some vocabulary and while I’m not the best in grammar it was in the test my strongest point (reading was lower than expected). While listening was and still is the bane (despite talking to my friends, but they modulate their speed for me), and until today, I actually braced for relearning for the next test in July, because I would never score the needed 19 Pts.

Sure, 114/180 is nothing to show off, but for me, despite my middle-aged-ness, it is a sign, if I keep on working hard, I can achieve so much more and it took a bit the fear off, of learning Kanji. For me this was an important step and motivator to push further.

So I just wanted to share this tiny speck of happyness and success with you and if you are thinking about learning Japanese and taking the JLPT, I’m rootin’ for you! You can do it!

You can't blame me, this is fucking bullshit. They don't offer working holiday visas for Americans, and rig their SSW system against americans by not issuing these tests in America.

You haven't been following along!

The Specified-Skilled Worker Visa is a way to get into Japan with only an n4. However, it requires you to take two tests. One is the JLPT. The other, is a Skills Test. I'm currently aiming to be with the Accomodation Industry in Japan, or the Food Service Industry in Japan. I'm floating both possibilities.

In the Accomodation Service Industry, the test is offered in Japan and some countries outside of Japan. Of those countries, India is the cheapest country to fly to and take the test. You can't take the test within Japan because that version of the test is limited to residents.

So I need to find out when this test is offered, and where I need to go. The consulate general of japan might have the answers i'm looking for.

I work for a German based international engineering company in their American division.
Regional manager for a niche business line but still all of NA looks good on a resume.
What are realistic chances they'd let me live in a research based area like tsukaba doing a specific engineering job that would be step down in pay and role?
Is japan good at hiring foreigners if its an international company vs local?
Id need business level proficiency it seems and im only at n4 so its a uphill battle but I need to be sure it'd even be worth it as theres a stigma for engineers coming in over there

you should just take knowing japanese enough for positions that require it out of the equation. the chasm between good-enough-for-work and n4 is massive it'll take you years to bridge it. there are agencies and recruiters that specialize in this ur best bet it to get in touch with them and see what the market in ur specific niche is like for foreigners.

>>

>>
>>50641647
Terrible idea if you actually plan to learn the language long term .
>>
Anki is great for your first 2000-4000 words but then it becomes diminishing returns and starts eating too much time.
>>
>>50641674
I'd argue its effectiveness increases as the words become more obscure.
>>
>>50641663
after you have the dictionary memorized then you can move on to using the language, confident in knowing all the vocabulary
>>
>>50641691
Perhaps, but if it's something too obscure it would probably be faster to look it up when it pops up than waste time grinding Anki wasting time you could spend on immersion, obscure words stick better in the context too. However when you're new to Japanese it gives immense gains and unlocks a lot of content so it's definitely worth it for the beginners.

>>

You're such a retard lmao
>>
>>50642045
No they're not, that's the point. You can easily recognize them and differentiate them at a glance.
>>

>>
>>50642065
You can do that through learning vocab, as well. It's not some unique skill known only to those who write.
>>
>>50642105
I was only borrowing his terminology to make a point. They obviously have meanings, like 州 is clearly a pictogram of a small island, but to the untrained learner, it initially appears as nonsense.
>>
>>50642118
You're missing the point. If you just stare at random kanji to learn vocabulary it can be hard to differentiate them sometimes. Learning them in isolation helps you recognize them and speed up learning the vocabulary.
>>
sometimes you just gotta silently ponder this list jpdb.io/kanji-by-frequency
>>
>>50642123
Why do you assume the kanji are "random" within vocabulary? You realize their meaning becomes understood as soon as you learn them through their associated vocab?
>>
>>50642129
Because they do look completely random if you've never seen kanji before its hard to just memorize a bunch of strokes when you know nothing. That's why people study kanji in isolation first sometimes. But I guess some people just pick it up instantly like you suggest.
>>
Do you use ChatGPT to build your Anki decks?
>>
>>50642138
It's arbitrary no matter if you make the kanji a separate study or not is really my point. It really comes from a flawed understanding that kanji are like letters, or that their components teach you their etymology.
Again, if we take 州. What does a small island have to do with a state, and how does knowing its etymology help you to understand its individual meaning of state/province? It's easier to accept that its current meaning is largely arbitrary when compared to its literal pictographic meaning.
>>
>>50642150
I'm lazy so I just use Yomitan's + button and only use gpt to help me trim the card when the entry is too vague or has too many definitions.
>>
just fill out kanji, reading and meaning, this isn't hard or time consuming even when scaled to dozens of words daily (which nobody even sustains)
anything extra is just masturbatory and an excuse to spend less time reading
>>
>>50642155
It doesn't help you 'understand' anything, it just helps you recognize the character that's all. It's just scaffolding.
>>

This is getting circular. The problem is it can be hard to recognize the kanji to memorize the vocabulary in the first place. If you're not familiar with them at all it looks 'random' that's why I said and its hard to cement the connections.
>>
>>50641836
Time for a fork, I guess...?
>>
>>50642230
It's only circular because you keep insisting learning them individually prevents them from appearing as "meaningless squiggles" in words. I've tried to demonstrate the opposite using an actual example, to which you keep going "no, no, no, no,"

Some are, some aren't. It's like saying you can't memorize geography unless you're able to draw a map from memory.
>>
>>50642489
Some would be difficult and some wouldn't. All I'm saying is having zero kanji exposure, studying them in isolation lets me pick up what they typically are like and recognize components and makes learning the vocabulary easier. I'm sorry that makes me retarded.
>>
>>50642493
It's either retardation or wilful ignorance.

Try reading some stuff. Even if it's really simple. The fact of the matter is your comprehension isn't going to get better until you start getting used to reading

Reading something narrated by a jaded edgelord (勇者刑に処す) brings home that cursing really isn’t a strong suit of this language.
ふざけやがって…
クソみたいな…
can’t really take this seriously. Granted, I assume that whoever wrote this is not on the peak power level as far as this goes

I think the problem more lies in the fact that you've never been cursed out (or reprimanded for cursing), so you don't have those negative feelings associated with the words.
