I wish the original artist didn't quit in shame, sure the style was stiff and that would have led to awkward scenes later on, but the base was charming and with the improvement that comes from drawing a manga we could have gotten something neat

There would not have been much of a shonen developement, if that's what you mean, as that shift was caused by the change in artist.
It would have probably continued as a detective/mistery story.
