Man, if I wasn't currently in the process of buying a house here I'd hop on that real quick. If they had a remote job or like a field rep type job, I'd be sincerely interested. I've had a few Benchmade products that I quite enjoyed, and cleaned/sharpened my buddy's Auto Osborne a few times.

I don't like the way the tips are on the delica and endura, the way they come to a wider angle at the tip. I know it probably strengthens them.
>>64814535
Some Spyderco mods end up looking funny because the blade finish quality really is a G10 / FRN quality-style finish. The rest of the knife ends up looking fancier than the blade.

Found this knife on a beach the other day smashed into some rocks while I was spreading my mother’s ashes
The handle looks to be in poor shape from ocean turbulence and the blade has almost lost its edge. The tip has been chipped but is still a 4/10 on sharpness.
The string looks old and the tie job is poor.
I plan to restore this blade and call it the ocean knife

I have removed the diving wire, removed the rust spots, oiled the blade and built a cardboard sheath as well as wrapping the handle. It feels much better now, but still needs to be polished and sharpened.
No idea what steel it is. This knife was gifted to me by Poseidon himself, it seems.

who knows what sort of waves this blade has ridden on, or how many fish it has encountered
Who knows what sort of dark nights this blade has slept under the sea during, before finally washing into a coast one day where it would be found by me on a hot summers evening underneath a rock
who knows how old it is, or who made it, where it came from or how many people have used it

I figured it was for diving since it had the string attached
I don’t dive so I’ll probably use this for camping or fishing
The rust underneath the handle was really fucking bad. Just spent a bit scrubbing it off which worked for most of it, but there’s some really caked on black bits most likely from the ocean that have baked themselves into the blade.
I hit the dagger with a blowtorch and scrubbed it while it was 800 degrees which took off a good chunk but there’s still some leftover stains. Probably will need to polish it to get all of it out, but still made good gains here

They have a light duty one which I assume would be slicier. How would you set that up though? I saw a video of a guy that carried a garberg AIWB. He flipped the belt loop upside down but it was still on his belt and wore the knife backwards down his pants.
Personally, I just use a pocket clip and don't wear belt knives in civilization so as to appear less nutty to the cops.

hmm, idk, I'm not too familiar with ring knives except for this. It's just for stabbing, edges are too big an angle to slice. Fixed blade, sheath clips to the pocket like a normal folder, looks like you have a karambit in your pocket.
You could go to https://www.bladehq.com/ and enter in your preferences and when you find some things you like, look up reviews on the quality.

Karambit nerd here. Not many options with straight edges and ring. If you don't mind a curved handle, Fox knives has some options but they aren't cheap. I particular like the dart.
As the other anon said, Cold Steel has a Tiger Claw knife where the curve on the blade isn't straight but not exactly a steep curve like most Karambits. Fairly inexpensive.

gentlemen..... i have successfully modified my combat troodon gen 3. Snipped 5 coils off ofeach spring and it finally fires as hard as i want it to now. The "hooks" i tried to bend on the ends are questionable to say the least so i don't know if it will hold up, but for now im lovin' it...
i was just fidgeting with it and finally got tired of the occasional misfires from the action being too wimpy and rage-modded it on the spot. THIS is how it should have felt out of the box.

>>64815657
Hey man, what do you recommend as a starter in something like 440c/d2, with a wave opener? I don't mind a curve on this thing, going to use it to practice my freehand recurve sharpening as well.
>>64815669
Awesome man, cool mod! Would you compare it to a Gen 2 ultratech in terms of snappiness? The coil hooks should be just fine, I know a couple of employees who have done something similar for customer knives / had to stretch springs on production knives. I would be extremely surprised if it fails on you.

I think a different sheath with a single tuckable belt clip could place something with the OAL of the eldris at an accessible ride height, tip-down, as it's roughly the same length as a G17 magazine. The factory sheath would be difficult to do that with because it covers so much of the grip.
I also struggle to justify why this would make sense to do. The tiny plastic puuko is cute, but drawing it would be perceived as a threat rather than retrieving a utility blade in any context outside of bushcraft.

Spyderco has a nice Karambit, the Karahawk with an emerson wave opener. I removed the clip and keep it in my small jeans pocket with the ring barely showing as you don't really need a clip if you have a ring to deploy.
I actually use cylindrical arkansas stones for my curved blades, Karambits and Kukris. I prefer to hold the blade horizontally in an underhand grip and move the stone along the edge, it's alot easier than keeping the stone flat and moving the blade on it.

A good budget option is the FoxEdge claw btw. Runs about 40$. It's 8Cr13MoV, comparable to 440c. Easier to sharpen but less edge retention. I find I don't care much about steel quality in a Karambit in any case since it's a specific use tool.

I haven’t had time to actually do it, but I was going to make a Mora 510 into a pocket sheath. Cut off the belt loop. Drill a small hole just undersized for a trimmed bolt for a DCC clip. Heat up the threads of the bolt and screw it in, melting into the sheath. Heat shrink on the rest of the clip. Was also looking at the Eldris but Mora just announced a slightly larger version with a sheath that looks better for this modification.

Yeah, I mean it wouldn't be completely ruined if i had destroyed the springs but it would have been a pain to get it up and running again. I had no intent of going through that rigmarole any time in the near future had I rendered it inoperable. Still kinda worried that the springs wont stay attached because they are barely hooked on, but that worry should fade with time. Or it'll just break, we'll see.
>>
>>64818208
If you're worried, just "peel" a tiny bit more of the spring off of the "body" of the spring to make a longer hook.

>>
>>64818218
i can't really, it was tuff just to make enough to get in the holes on the assembly without bending the rest of the spring too much. I don't have good tools for it, i was using swiss army knives. Do you have any recommended tools for bending springs in the future?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>64818248
You'd be looking for jewelry pliers probably. Cheap set from your local hobby / craft store will run you like $7 each max. If you find a pawn shop or something you can find good stuff for cheap too. I used to do chainmail and used the smooth-jaw pliers to bend rings. Be careful, go slowly. When bending for 90 degrees, it's better to have a larger curve from the "body" to the "head" as that'll reduce stress on the joint.
When putting together, we would take the slider, put one leg on, and put the springs on. Then we'd attach the second leg to the springs, and then put the second leg on the slider. Makes it easier, might help.
>>
>>
>>64819351
We used RemOil for OTFs, anything thicker and you get firing issues. You can use other oils as long as it's thin enough. Extend the blade, a drop on the top and bottom of the base of the blade, a drop in the button track, and you're golden for basic maintenance.
Fitz made a video about maintenance, never watched it so I dunno how good it is. You can polish the parts of the slider that interacts with the locks to make it even smoother (laser / water jet cuts leave ridges, you can feel it on a fresh knife) with high-grit sandpaper or something similar. I used a nylon wheel on a bench grinder.
White lithium grease on the main springs will stop it from making noise. Apply as desired, a dab about the size of half a pea or so.
If you sharpen it yourself, take some blue tape and put it on the handle opening where the knife comes out and it'll stop damage. We do it with the big belt sanders and it's been proven to protect the chassis from accidental bumps.
If you got other questions feel free to ask or email. If you need pictures, lemme know and I'll make some amazing MSPaint artistry lol

I think the real reason the combat troodon g3 needs stronger springs to be 100% reliable is because it just takes more force to make it lock out or retract. It's strange. Neutral out the blade and then try to tap it into the handle, it takes way more of an impact to actually make it lock in place than basically every other otf. I don't know why, though, because I feel the lockbar give way before it hits that point of resistance. My ultratech, axial, guardian tactical, the lightest tap with the blade neutral will lock it into place. CT? Takes a harder smack to do the same. And so it's the only one I've had to modify...
Before the mod I thought maybe it was the spring assembly creating resistance right before the lock goes into place, but it doesn't seem to have actually taken any MORE force to make it happen after the shortening. Very strange indeed. I should probably take it apart and see what's actually happening there.

>>64821501
It's also a very hefty blade. The resistance you're talking about is the hold-close lock starting to be engaged. If you disassemble the CT and drop an extremely small dab of oil straight down into the pit where the spring is, and then a dab on the face of the lock that hits the rear of the blade, it'll feel better. Also polish the slider's edges.
>>64821776

Not that guy but that particular example was egregious because it wasn't just that MT copied a design, they did so with the intent to beat the original design to market with their version. If people just accepted that kind of behavior companies would no longer show off prototypes at shows and there would probably be way more espionage between companies which would result in killing creativity and innovation instead of companies focusing on making the best knife designs they can think of.

By what, a company or a dude?
I can put a proper edge on a knife, depending on a few factors, in less than an hour. That's with diamond plates and by hand. If it's a company, you get added to the stack. They might be doing bulk sharpening for restaurants so it'll be a bit longer.
>>
>>
>>64824997
depends on the steel you're trying to sharpen, how dull the knife is, the abrasive material/medium you're using, if you're changing the profile or not, how good you are at sharpening, etc
so about three fiddy
>>
>>
in your collecting, is there something you focus on?
I mostly try to collect stuff that's in some way novel to me (be that mechanisms, materials, designs or interesting historical significance), mostly secondhand stuff from ebay so it's not just looking like the frontpage of bladehq. I don't really go super high end super expensive (unless someone were to sell it at massive discount) because something interesting I got for 30 is just as special to me as if it were 300

Thanks, I'm generally shit at sharpening so I needed a par time to compare to as I get better.
At what level of hardness/alloying does a diamond plate become necessary? I'm pretty sure an Arkansas stone is appropriate for 1095, but a Leatherman's 420HC knife seems to be harder to touch with it.

Practice makes perfect. Took me most of a retail work day to figure out how to use a King 1k/6k for the shitty deli knives I was stuck using. I watched Murray Carter's video about the 7 steps of sharpening. Some of it's kinda "muh head games" but I do recommend it because he explains it well.
> At what level of hardness/alloying does a diamond plate become necessary?
When you go to the higher carbon steels. I did my 440C beater on non-diamonds but it was abused harder than a kid on Epstein's Island. I'd say about D2, VG-10 is when you start eyeing diamond plates, and S35 is when you basically need them. I started with the cheapass clone plates on Ali for those, upgraded to name-brand when I got better.
The Leatherman might also feel weird because of the angle of the grind, and the fact you're holding the whole multitool.

Frankly have it made by anyone but the spanish. As the resident 19th century sword tard on here, the Bilbo designs are cool and fun. Their Spanish/south Italian broadsword rapier/spadroon/transitional swords are really fun. But Spanish sabres have at best been below average. I don't know why it is.
Fun fact that's an earlier broadsword blade cut down. During the Colonial/rebellion era, the gov't/army had modern up to date swords and guns. But the local forces had to make do with whatever. Do you'll see this sort of ad-hoc up-armoring/composite construction to stuff. Simple stirrup hilts with additional protection, wrought iron bars riveted through hilts in a crude manner, etc. A big giveaway beyond older blades being used is a specific type of rounded grip was frequently used. It has a really fun sorta post apocalyptic/Mad Max vibe to it.
>Picrel is one I paid way too fucking much for at Bonhams, in my defense it looked like a basket hilt: https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30917/lot/1039/a-spanish-colonial-silv er-hilted-officers-sword/. I believe this one is actually French made but it is a bit of a mystery. The entire thing is really well done. The blade is threaded and you can disassemble the entire thing like Italian sabres. Blade is mid 18th century German. Things like the bars of the guard all interlocking, a much higher degree of craftsmanship to it all, and rivets being grenade emblems make me suspect this was more pro-state than a local insurgency thing, alongside the hilt being a nickel silver alloy. No way to prove any of this myself but it's really unusual. Feels more like a shearing sword or an anti-spadroon in many ways in that you largely have to hammer grip it, it is a light cutter, with some thrusting ability but not in a fucked up way like most spadroons where they took a thrusting blade and tried to make it cut + a too narrow grip.

either way the livewire isn't even on my top 3 for american otfs
in no particular order it's
Guardian Tactical Scout
Pros: Smoothest, lowest friction action out of any otf i've held and it's not even close, clip point harpoon shape is nice, outstanding blade/handle ratio, low profile glassbreaker doesn't discourage thumb capping grip, Elmax is a somewhat uncommon steel, very nice out-of-the-box edge geometry
Cons: T6 hardware, the carbon fiber inlay on clip side can arrive with a small superficial crack (mine did at least), while the clip on the all-metal version can't seem to handle much abuse without bending
Ultratech Gen IV
Pros: Best aesthetic (subjective), flat grind but tall and with a small fuller, well-hardened T8+T30 hardware, springs seem to be more durable and reliable than most. Good blade/handle ratio. Easiest to service due to rear holes, i see stuff get ejected from the back at times so it really is somewhat self-cleaning.
Cons: Conspicuous glass breaker isn't comfortable against the thumb, big L for the tacticool grip, not as deep carry as some people would like, the slider switch has sharp edges and grips well but is not for people with soft woman thumbs.
Axial Shift v3
Pros: Feels like an absolute tank; 7075-t6 + magnacut + sturdy, boxy construction, true deep carry clip, only otf ive seen not thread screws into the chassis (uses a binder post style dual screw, required two T8's though), spare parts (screws, lockbars, clips, spring assemblies) are sold directly on axial website for easy self-repair
Cons: Poor blade/handle ratio, i managed to break a firing spring ($13) in mine after "only" ~20,000-30,000 actuations (I'm incredibly hard on my otfs with the fidgeting), then a lockbar spring ($3) crumbled a few thousand after that. Thick behind the edge; needs a reprofiling imo, no glass breaker (possibly a pro)
I'll say the Livewire, for all my misgivings with it, is a good first attempt by Kershaw though.

For all intents and purposes a balisong is a compromise between fixed blade rigidity and foldable concealment. You can get good at deploying it quickly but essentially a standard fixed blade will be a more ideal weapon.

>>64831787
It was a utility knife that was used for self defense because it's what people had on them, that got morphed into le ebin combat weapon in western media. Now people think it's bad at both utility and combat. Much like the karambit in that regard.

I think the most I've paid so far was $200, but I used to work with a grocery store meat manager who had a $450 custom knife because he'd break down entire goats from scratch and needed the extra durability and edge retention, with a custom handle to not cramp.

I impulse bought one of the reverse color basilisks last year, twice now I've been tempted, checked online, and a drop has happened within hours before. First was a BRS Alpha Beast Infinity and now this one.
I like the knife now that it's broken in. But the finish on the blade is pretty rough and the handles have a bad feeling. Wish I could polish them myself and send them back for anodizing or something. The BRS is probably the better flipper mostly for the handles but when I put some zippymod inserts in the handle it cut down on the vibration and it feels really fucking solid in the hand.
>Yes I know the colors are kinda cringe but I didn't choose the knife colors to begin with.

Excluding swords and daggers and shit like that about the same for me. It was the Heretic Cleric Ultem after they went out of stock elsewhere. I regret nothing because outside of wanting to polish the underside of the trigger, this thing is a fucking masterpiece.
>>
>>
>>64835671
The trigger and top have some scratches because I wanted to deliberately distress it at first. But as I was trying to wear the coating on the frame the fucking thing just would not wear and got super glossy black instead. It's less 90s rainbow transparent and more like super see through and clear now.
>>
>>64835387
well it's bog oak inlay and it's hard to tell in that pic but the handle and blade are both polished so i guess that boosted the price
the actual msrp seemed to be 675 but dlt took their cut

>Heretic Cleric
I've been eyeing this model because it's got a thin profile which is my favorite when it comes to otfs (love the profile of the GT Scout) but it's also quite long. I've only been able to find the Cleric in Tanto and Dagger though which are both meh shapes to me... I could settle for a Tanto but they put the fuller right in the middle for some reason which compounds the blade geometry issue already inherent to otfs.

Where do you think the "v14" part of the name comes from, anon?
>>
>>
>>64836298
The blade part looks almost the same.
The V14 has the blade continue in one piece as the guard and out through the sides of the handle scales to a spike at the end, more akin to the V42.
This looks like a classic F/S stick tang. The guard is a separate piece and it has a round separate handle piece and a pommel that likely screws onto the tang like F/S knives are wont to do.
All a F/S knife needs is the diamond cross section of the blade coming out to zero ground edges like they were in the war. The primary diamond shape of the blade is 11 degrees per side, so it wouldn't be a problem to sharpen them at 20 degrees. I have a J. Nowill one (official current NATO model) and they ground the edges, poorly, at like 45 degrees, so it would take a major reprofiling to get the edge to 20 degrees. And the tip came to a tiny little square, not a point. I suspect they do it on purpose because Britain.
That's all it needs is the zero grind, but this is a fancy one made in North Carolina, so they're doing the fuller and a hollow grind.
>>64836315
I just like the F/S design. It's a little bit different than what they currently have. I'm hoping it will be cheaper than the Harsey and V14 (~$500) since it's not full tang. It's definitely going to be more expensive than the Raider dagger.
>>
>>
>>
>>64836333
its the same shitty tang as the Ka-Bar brand Ka-Bar. With the best steel in the game right now they would have sold much more if they improved that IMO. Sample size of one, me.
Nobody wants to pay that much for a rat tail tang. If it was full tang i'd probably pay even more

My Gerber that I've owned for a few years has started to develop some slight looseness in the blade when I wiggle it perpendicular to the direction of blade travel. It probably doesn't affect it's strength too much, but the clicky rattling noise is kind of annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this? The parts of the handle don't seem to have loosened, so I'd probably have to take it apart to fix whatever is loose inside.
I prefer the newer version of this knife with the switch in the handle to unlock the blade as opposed to the original version which had that switch on the side in one of the thumb cutouts. My father has one of those older models that he used a lot where the locking mechanism no longer works.

IDK. People say that. The famous Commando talking about the knife was disappointed that in the example he was given the tip was a bit blunt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDGHKyB3T_U
The way I got mine, it probably wouldn't've made it through winter clothing. My Buck knife went through jeans and cardboard like butter, but this didn't do so well, so I sharpened it to get the tip sharp. The edges should be sharp too, so it cuts its way in rather than forces. And so it can cut its way out too. You don't want dull edges, someone could just grab the blade.
>>
>>
what's a good reasonably cheap 2.5 inch non-automatic knife for both general use and as a last resort in self defense? i know firearms are far better for that but the stores are zoned just outside my communist city, and i don't have a car. i'd likely sooner get away from the situation or just use my pepper spray anyway, but i'd rather not have to leave that up to fate.

a gun IS legally an option? Then nigga... just have someone drive you there. Does your shithole not have lyft or uber or some local equivalent? If you're nervous about making other people nervous, bring an empty box or something and have them drop you off somewhere near the gun store, buy the gun, put it in the box, then get picked up somewhere near the gun store instead of directly from it. Nobody will have to know.
