I used to live 15 minutes away from an indoor range that had a dozen rental full autos on the wall. If you had ID and a credit card then any of them could be yours, for a few hours at least. The range was literally next door to a gun store that specialized in Class III firearms. It's not hard to pass a federal background check, and as Ian from Forgotten Weapons pointed out, provided you save up and don't insist on something that's ultra-rare and ultra-desirable like a FG-42 or a mint M1928 Thompson, a full-auto is within financial reach of most Americans. If memory serves, he said he got his ouiablaster for like $15k (though admittedly, that was the mid-2010s, shit's more expensive now). That might be real money for a lot of people, but it's not an "only if I win the lottery" figure either.
If full-auto is "forbidden fruit", then it's your own fault for living somewhere that sucks. And if you do, you're still only one trip to Vegas away from shooting a tank cannon. Come here to the semi-great state of Arizona at the right time of year, bring some cash, and there's a guy who'll let you fire his 152mm howitzer.

Everyone was using full auto in Vietnam. It was primarily the reason why the M16 was adopted in the first place as the M14 replacement. The M249 or FN Minimi is literally controllable with one hand. Are you a child?

SMGs were replaced with carbines. The major criticism of full auto cqb on a carbine was the super long throw. So if you had to come on and off safe for SOP no one wants to do a 180 degree throw. The 90 degree throw is easier to work with.

I know they are using the rattler with subs on full auto. Probably due to the reduced lethality of subs.

The closer I am to a threat, the more full auto makes sense to me.
