It wouldnt have to compete with armor.
You should aim for a drone, make it redundant enough it can take an harsh beating, pack it full of weapons and it works great as mobile firepower oj demand in a city

For the price of that thing you could just make a low altitude ground effect armored drone and it would accomplish the same thing while being able to fly while still using cover, or a tracked non flying UGV with 10x the survivability but only slightly less maneuverability.
There is exactly two kinds of Mechs that would serve any real purpose, and those are
>Ones small enough they're more power armor than Mech, they can enter buildings and ride in APCs and only survive against tanks by using cover, but would still be penned by an RPG warhead on a FPV. (It would however give significant protection against small arms and shrapnel, and the majority of drone kills are from dropped grenades)
These are the ones we may see in the next 50 years, even if they are impractical as long as they are not actively suicidal they will likely be made regardless simply because they would be an INCREDIBLY effective recruitment tool/propaganda piece.
>Ones that do Armored Core flying bullshit where they are more like the world's most armored attack helicopter, where the legs are more oversized landing gear for slamming into the ground at 200 kph and immediately changing direction 180° fast enough to turn an operator's brain to mush than for going on a leisurely stroll and the humanoid build is because it directly interfaces with the pilot's brain so more humanlike=better control
>Even heavily armored AC builds rely on the same mission profile- kick in the door, blow up expensive shit, leave before the military can arrive and kill you because no matter how armored your AC is, it does not regenerate and will run out of ammo.
Currently outright fantasy. Even in the Armored Core games, they are outclassed by conventional (but huge) tanks and aircraft with only plot armored gigapilots who are more analogous to old mythical heroes engaging in anime robot brawls being exceptional enough to warrant the absolutely massive cost of operating an AC in the first place.

I think they should just train AI to drive a tank.

These things have little to no autonomy. They're merely playing out prerecorded sets of moves.

They're still doing better than the russians, although that's admittedly not the greatest of feats.

AiDol's algorithms are so advanced that it can flawlessly emulate the movement patterns of a typical russian alcoholic.
Still, FEDOR https://youtu.be/P_CDu1hYXxk remains the undisputed peak of russoid engineering prowess.

I fail to see the problem here. It walks just like a Russian: drunk, uncoordinated, and headed for a fall.

Any new technology or materials that would allow for mechs to exists will be applied to existing weapons and vehicles which would make them far out strip these new mechs, making mechs DOA.
