atleast winchester shotgun ammo is. i bought a used police 870, took it out in the country with my friend and his fudd dad. put some winchester target in it and the gun would lock up every other round, had to mortar it. literally any other brand of shells works in this gun, whats the deal? bonus points cause fudd dad hit me with the "well looks like he sold you a crap gun!"

I had the same experience with winchester low brass.
1995 production PM so not a freedom group issue. But never figured out why.
Shells from the same box work fine in a 590a1, and benelli m1 and m4.

I learned this through trial and error doing sporting clays, but 870s don’t like low brass shells, for me it’s Fiocchi that does it, but it does it for everything (Remington, Benelli, Mossberg) but my Auto 5, which eats everything and keeps trucking.

That *is* cheap ammo. Winchester AA brand is the gold standard for trap/skeet shooting. It is premium ammo.
That said, what you described sounds like something wrong with the gun, not the ammo. It probably just needs to be cleaned and lubed. Take the gun apart, find the problem.

The only Winchester ammo I'll use is 9mm. Their 20ga locked up my 870 in a manner similar to what you described. Their .357 and .44 was often so out of spec that I'd have to slap the cylinder of my revolvers open if I could even get it shut in the first place. My wonder9s eat the 9mm just fine but frankly that's just to be expected, it's a low bar.

FWIW, the Herter's 22LR (rebranded SuperX with a different headstamp) shot like garbage in my 22. Now, that could've been me except I shot better groups that day with two other brands IIRC AND one of the Winchester rounds literally went like 8" low at 50yds (note: only out of a sample size of ~100rds). That's what I get for being desperate during covid and not wanting to shoot all of my Federal and Aguila. Had a pic somewhere.
