You can die in like a minute from a cut aorta, depends on how bad it is.
But also, even fully ruptured, if you get medical attention fast enough they've got better than even odds of saving you. The shit fully stocked surgeons can do to patch you up and keep you from dying is pretty crazy.

Honestly, if serious criminals have you somewhere they can execute you at leisure, gunshots are the merciful way. Fire is cheap and plentiful, after all.
If they can keep you there and away from medical intervention, and they really want to use a gun, gutshot is about the way to go, takes many hours, very painful, get to enjoy some sepsis before the end. But if someone rushes you to the ER survivability is high.

The human body can sustain itself for a surprisingly long time even in the face of what is an inevitably fatal injury. See : people who have been cut in half at the waist by a train and other examples posted in the common rekt threads of /gif/.

My guess would be as follows : shove the end of the barrel up their ass; from there aim for their sternum. Pull the trigger. The bullet will tear its way through their intestines in multiple places and exit the body after passing through the pancreas on its way out. The extraordinary volume of extremely hot gasses that are forced into the abdominal cavity will do just as much, if not more damage, rupturing the intestines in multiple other locations, likely destroying the bladder and prostate due to proximity. This carries a fair chance of severing the major abdominal blood vessels which would lead to a fairly quick death via exsanguination. But since it's a story you can just say the victim got really unlucky and those vessels were not severed. Even with immediate medical treatment the victim is going to die slowly and painfully. The intestines have been destroyed beyond salvage. The abdominal cavity is full of bacteria that don't belong and are seeping into the bloodstream. Even if sepsis is prevented or survived the victim no longer has the capacity to absorb nutrients. Theoretically they could survive off of IV nutrients, but is the victim the sort to be able to get that level of medical care for the rest of their life?
There's the classic "shoot 'em in the dick and let them bleed out slowly." But that's survivable with immediate medical care.

Lots of little ice pick wounds to the lungs, intestines, stomach, pancreas, liver, etc. Too much damage to be able to fix, even with a surgical theater. Victim will get to slowly bleed out/drown in their own fluids. Make sure to knee cap them and put a half dozen rounds into each hand for maximum helplessness.

"cartel style" executions rarely bother with guns, at least from what little I know. something like dismembering and decapitating the guy, or, as previously mentioned, burning him alive, usually sends more of a message than just some lead suppositories. as for dragging out the pain and delaying death, there are plenty of far more painful procedures than simply shooting someone.
