There's a crescent shaped blast shield on each side of the cylinder, designed to redirect the blast away from your supporting arm on the forend. Unfortunately, the net effect is to redirect the blast back into your face, very unpleasant. If you remove one of the blast shields (remove the right side one if right handed and vise-versa) it allows the gas to vent out the side rather than into your face while still protecting your arm.
