This. Other tanks used it as well and to my knowledge all worked the same way. Some were mounted on the rear.

Even for heavy tanks, it seems they wanted to prevent strain on the stabilizer and misalignment of the sights due to barrel wobble, and this is even more so for light self-propelled AT guns.
I think some had a mechanism that allowed them to be detached by pulling a string from the fighting compartment.
