After I finished "Le Français par la Méthode Nature" and I read "Le Petit Prince" with no problem. So whatever level you end up at finishing that book is enough. Also, it's the perfect book if you're starting French from absolutely zero. The first ~10 chapters are really repetitive though, but after that the constant reptition stops.
