Now that I think about it, if you were a nameless guttersnipe, you could insert one of your own books into one of these 'recommended reading lists' and no one would ever know, because it would just look like another obscure tome...
I'm not saying I've done that, just food for thought.

if a chart interests me I will look up all the books I don't know, so it will become immediately obvious if someone does this, unless they happen to already be a well-established writer, in which case why bother doing it in the first place?

As much as I liked the book, the easiest way to read a fictional book and understand it is to take a break every 2-3 chapters (4 if they're short) and get a drink and a small snack, and review the chapters you read, how it ties into the narrative, any themes that are present and whether you're enjoying it before going back in for another few chapters. It's how I read books at night before bed. Drink some tea, nibble on some Jammie Dodgers, think about what I'm reading, and then go to bed.
