Performative is slipping into that gaslighting territory where overuse makes it meaningless and if you disagree you’re performatively gaslighting me.

02/03/26(Tue)08:25:29 No.25064145 Isn't performative reading mostly women projecting? Since they are always posting videos of themselves reacting (and over acting) to books they're reading and showing off their size their bookshelves? Men into reading seem to stick with the same twenty books or so and talk about them because they're so mainstream with male readers

I would never read any of these books in public. In fact, I felt quite ashamed even while reading them in private. I even tossed the copies after I finished them, imagine if someone spied any of these novels on my shelf, they must think I had put them on display! I do have a queer respect for people who have read them in public. I think it takes bravery to risk being seen as performative or engaged in conspicuous leisure (and if they are simply naive, oh to see through a child's eyes!). A previous girlfriend of mine showed some interest and wanted to purchase Infinite Jest from a bookstore (in a lapse of judgment, I had praised the book and waxed about it at length, in the perceived private space of our bedroom). Imagine my shame! I urged her to order it online instead, but how could I possibly explain the issue to her? Once she started toward the register, I fled to the car, narrowly escaping the eye of the bookstore cashier, my ultimate nemesis. The clever cashier would immediately spot the truth, of course, for we entered the store together. It only bought me once last glance, one last taste, the rapport built from years of purchasing obscure novels in the store about to be destroyed. I knew I could never return again. The relationship was slowly destroyed by that novel, displayed in our living room on the coffee table, her bookmark never moving past 100 pages, a permanent insult, a scar, utter humiliation, and the questions from visitors (if I could not hide it in time), and all of this from a single lapse! One can never be too careful, especially around women.

Basically people who pretend to enjoy and brag about any book that is hailed as a masterpiece that is one on a technical level, but that even those who know and discern the technical nuances behind it find is a chore to go through rather than something they find enjoyable.
