it was every miserable depressing post apocalyptic story ever. that's really it. didn't even add any new twists to the genre. he's just very good at being bleak I guess.

I think that is due to how it was written. Due to Blood Meridian's lavish prose there is, at least I felt there to be, a distance between reader and the events of the book. With probably the sole exception of that passage that describes a child disappearing with the very obvious implication that the judge raped and killed them. That is the only part of it that I remember sticking out to me as being felt. The Road is written in a much more personal style and as a result the events feel much more like they are actually happening rather than being described by a detached narrator. The image of the guy being left stood naked in the middle of the road has definitely stuck with me much more than a lot of the violent imagery in Blood Meridian.

These men have a bad relationship with their father

the skewered new born scene in the road is what got me. later the man and son discussing correct suicide technique. my heart also was legitimately poiunding through the basement full of humans-as-livestock scene.
not normally that squeamish. might take a cormac break

I enjoyed The Road but didn’t care much for Blood Meridian. Based on this, should I bother with The Passenger? The synopsis intrigues me and I need something to read before The Tunnel by Gass gets its new release in April.

This is the apocalypse scenario I would be least likely to survive in. All the others like walking dead, the stand, fallout etc I think I would have a decent chance in, but if the road version happened I would just shoot myself immediately like the man's wife did. Fuck that noise.

The Passenger is awful. That and Stellas Maris are the only works in his bibliography that are not worth reading at all and should actively be avoided. Can't believe Mac fumbled it at the last minute

assuming youve already read No Country, my other cormac favorites are Outer Dark, and The Crossing. Passenger is boring.

It was comfy

The Crossing is pretty fucked up. Cities of the Plain is more fucked up because they revisit their fantasies in an attempt to reconstruct them, despite knowing that their fantasies are impossible. Also "Whoever speaks first loses in a knife fight."
