I've read The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea and The Temple of the Golden Pavillion by Mishima. Didn't really like the former but was amazed by the latter.

Just started Kokoro by Natsume Soseki, the prose is so pleasant.

Unless you're reading it in the original Japanese you're not reading Soseki's prose but the translator's.

Most of the criticism came from the fact that nip writers were using it, along with Bakin's other works, as a source of inspiration instead of the deep postmodernslop the western academia was gobbling up instead.
It's not bad, but it's generic in the sense that it representative of the action/adventure genre in Japan and mostly due to it being the series that went on to inspire everything else, directly or indirectly, most notably adventure manga and videogames.
