It's grown into a really fat fucking game over the last few years, lots of content now. The only major drawback is the procedural missions get really fucking repetitive long before you're through the first campaigns, and once we get to the clan invasion stuff, the mission difficulty is just fucked. The story missions are easier than the tier 3 missions, but the proc gen missions are nightmare world. On demolition missions you'll regularly fight 30-40 light mechs that endlessly trickle in.
Unfortunately PGI is probably going under in the next couple years because even despite the higher than expected sales of the Clans expac for MW5, the Clans games themselves seem to be under performing, one of their unannounced projects was supposedly cancelled, and half the studio was laid off earlier this year.

Feels kind of pointless if you're not already sucked in to buy all the dlc when infinity extra missions types and mech bodies doesn't matter much when the AI still sucks and the game can't handle difficulty without just drowning you in mechs.

I think Steel Battalion is very cool, even if it's expensive and hard to play, but it can't get more mecha than that game
I would, however, recommend assault suit valken on SNES it's pretty fun

I think MechWarrior IV: Vengeance deserves more love, even though I'm 100% biased towards it because it was my first Battletech-related game. Also, this thread reminded me that I have to play MegaMek soon.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries got me around shooting 4 money some time ago, but recently i got hooked by 2 other mecha games: Daemon X Machina (the first one, there is another coming IIRC) and a shitty Unity top-view twin stick shooter: HSS reloaded.

Another Century's Episode 1, 2, 3 and R. No other mecha game comes close. It's Super Robot Wars but you can actually control the mecha in real time instead of turn based.
And the intro from the 1st game still slaps HARD.

In trend of recent games, i've been trying Granvir.
When it comes to customization, i'm completely hooked.
You can dick around a lot and still make effective builds. In this case 4 arms, 2 pistols and 2 missile-shields and i can use them all seperately.
I could use it to block one shield from the front and keep the other at the side, making my left flank nigh invulnerable while shooting missiles.
It's got a lotta parts which are pretty funny. Like a laser penis show, or croc chest with flamethrower, a gun face.
The enemy is braindead and spammy but it still makes for a decent tech demo.

What's wild about 5M is hearing everyone play the game normally like that, meanwhile my experience with it due to how late I jumped in was just running the gladiator circuit nonstop and feeling like I missed nothing in terms of salvage and income.
I don't think I've ever actually triggered a mercenary unit encounter because I just kept prize fighting instead of doing contractwork.

After getting hooked on Armored Core VI, I've gone back and started working my way through the series from the beginning. Currently on Armored Core 2, but I gotta admit that I keep going back to Master of Arena to chip away at the extra arenas. Armored Core 1 is definitely the best in terms of sheer PvE mission variety, though. There's a bit of a learning curve to the controls, but once you get them down, it feels so good.

If you simply want to stick to the same cosmetic, there is a tier 01-04 system.
You choose your character which could be a scavenger, merchant, mercenary.. which means you level that same weapon either through pulling it from corpses, visiting the black market and getting lucky, or upgrading it yourself as a gearhead.

I want to rant about how badly I bounced off front mission 3. I tried 3, because I usually like PS1 games. I hate 3. It's a pretty slow, basic, and clunky console tactics game, but the main character I want to see pulled apart by wild horses. He's always screaming "I don't care about that! I just want to save my sister!" no matter the scenario. He gets held at gunpoint by like 7 military mechs in the opening of the second scenario, and he's still ranting about his sister and how everyone should just get out of his way. He then gets held in detention and refuses to name his very important father because "I got nothing to do with that guy, and where's my sister?".
I hate listening to this guy so fucking much. He screams at anyone. People holding him at gunpoint. The police. Mystery women. The captain of the ship he's traveling on. His best friend. He just never fucking stops going "yeah, but where's my sister!!!". He could see aliens descend upon earth and tell him they want to share the secrets of the universe with him and he'd go "HUH? what's that got to do with saving my siiiiiiister!!!!".
The more I interact with this series the more I'm surprised why it's such a sleeper, anyway. It's extremely basic tactics with lots of random to hit chance and not really any tactics aside from "get everyone to shoot the same guy". I'm genuinely coming off thinking Evolve and Left alive were almost healthy directions for the series. The mechs are very cool though.

Alisa is quite the looker, though. Can you really blame my man Kazuki?
The issue with 3, apparently, is that Square had a bigger role in steering the writing to make it more appealing for younger audiences, so it was less brooding and war-like and more 'juvenile', making a weird mix of geopolitical intrigue left in the background while screeching kids chaperoned by glowies, defectors and supersoldiers remained at the front. I keep going back to 3 for the capturing mechanics and 'sparking' skills, but that's me.
I'd tell you to keep going if you haven't played 4 and 5. The gameplay becomes more squad-oriented and it puts more enphasis in teamwork by giving defined roles to pilots and linking/chaining their actions, be it directly (4) or automatically (5). Five gives you a lot of freedom because you can recruit different pilots at certain points and try multiple set-ups of these roles and the weapons/backpacks they can use. 4's plot can be a bit sluggish as it jumps back and forth between two stories that converge midway and 5's plot is more enjoyable if you pick up references/timeframes from the previous games, but it's more generic fluff than anything if you're there for the gameplay and Wanzers -- and neither of those has whiny kids for characters, so that's a plus.

It's probably "feature complete" and you'll have more fun with it than any previous version. Adding all the clan mechs was a pretty big bump to the roster.
They'll never fix the AI and every mission is still a wave shooter, and these are too complex for mods to really fix either, but it is what it is.
>>23673392
I'm glad steel bounty got picked up. It doesn't necessarily look as impressive as some others and I hope the untextured look doesn't turn people away/gets options later, but he's quietly doing a lot of shit that people don't even think about like a functioning multi-target system and the first person ejection.

5Mercs?
For a while, actually, depending on who you ask. As of the most recent DLC it's even starting to compete with the likes of 2Mercs in my eyes as the most comprehensive Succ Wars era game for Inner Sphere stuff.
5Clans has the implication of like 2 more DLC campaigns at minimum to give the whole of the Clan Invasion factions a spotlight and really the only neg I would throw at it as an overall package is that it runs like ass compared to 5Mercs, and I can only blame UE5 for so much of that when we're finally starting to see UE5 games that don't require infinite compute resources to run at a reasonable frame rate.

My favorite mecha game is when I'm in the bathroom and I'm taking a shit and I pretend I'm in the cockpit of a robot and then I accidentally drop my robot toy in the toilet and have to fish it out of my poo, and then just as I pull it out, I shit myself and leave a mess on the carpet.

There's a youtube series that basically goes through all the details of every mission, so if you get stuck, that's the place. Unfortunately being in character is cool but makes it super wordy and extended when you might want to just know a few details. Be nice to have a cutdown version with an faq.

How's megaton musashi w? It seems like it plays nice enough. I tried looking up some info on the collabs, it seems all versions get them, but are they any good? The mazins seem like they're ok but getter doesn't seem like it gets the other forms, and it might not get all the attacks?
>>
>>23637436
Firing half the studio after the game launches is common. You just don't need as many devs for maintenance and expansions as you do for actual game and tool development. Clans definitely didn't make as much as they wanted, but they keep making good DLC, so there's at least some money in it.
>>
>>23694651
It's fine if you can stand the gacha mechanics. I gave it an honest try after watching the anime series, just to see where the plot went afterwards and after finally getting to the point where the game continues on with it, I burned out on it and didn't pick it back up for what may already be years now.
>>
>>23691682
Not a fan of the inability to choose your skills directly in it. I have to sit there and dick around with my name to get the skills I want when I replay it. Also there's no upside to being an oldtype in it.
>>
>>
>>
>>23696422
There are upsides to being a Natural or Coordinator in Battle Destiny, both are good options. There’s no good reason at all to be an oldtype in Battle Universe - your stats increase slower and you’re completely locked out of many MS, especially in the later eras. Whereas Battle Destiny is happy to let Naturals use Coordinator MS with a stat penalty.

They're all kinda meaningful for content reasons since a bunch of them solve for the lack of long campaigns not to mention that some of the most important events in the early 31st century BT chronology happen during those campaigns, not to mention the mech and equipment additions.
I think if you're in it for geopolitical story time, focus on everything but Solaris Showdown, CtA and HotIS, but those 3 help flesh out gameplay systems as i recall, with Solaris giving you the lucrative play option of just abusing arena contracts for cash and salvage.
Another way to look at it is this: do you like the Clan Invasion era more than late Succ Wars? If so, you can jump on Shadows of Kerensky and play it as the epilogue/sequel to the base campaign story as well as the direct tie in to the events going on in 5Clans (I believe the Ghost Bears dlc scenario in 5C overlaps with the events of Shadows).
...really, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, they all cumulatively build onto and make 5mercs into a better game than it was at base launch.

I probably should stop replying to bump posts...
Dead hand is a very 3d game, the levels are randomly generated caves that can be fully destroyed / deformed with rockets and digging tools in any direction (a bit like a 3d Worms game, see picrel). Making sense of the "topography" of the level can be hard from an overhead view, so the game gives you a free camera (think of Descent without the roll) which takes some time to get used to.
Since the tanks can rotate in place there can be some clipping against the terrain, especially with long vehicles and front guns.
The AI can be very dumb (by design, according to the dev), for instance it's common for sniper enemies to spend their turn shooting at 2m thick cover they can't penetrate.
The UI and SFX are very barebones. Not unusual in roguelikes, but still...
You're thrown in at the deep end, there's no hand holding and no tutorials, just a few "how to play" slides. And the game is very demanding, you have to do things right or you'll die very quickly.
Even with all that I love it. Great atmosphere, hard but fair difficulty, and once you get into the groove of things it plays very snappily which is unusual in turn based tactical games. Also, tanks with legs.

With all its jank and Piggy's dumb decisions still nothing beats Mechwarrior Online for me.
It gets the feel of the mech just right (even if its not the exact type of mecha I prefer, I delivers what it's going for the best) and mechlab is absolute god tier. Every hitbox and hardpoint placement matters, you can feel all of your mechlabs decisions in how the mech is handling.
I hope we get another customization-focused mecha PvP game with just as much replayability eventually. As much as I love MWO, it's old and busted.

NTA but the combat animations take forever, with wanzers skating around each other and what not as they trade shots. It may look cool at first but it just goes on and on and on. Nothing as concise as in any of the other games in the series. I've beaten it years ago on the emulator, so I don't know if the remake improves anything but I only made it through because I turned off the combat cutscenes, aside from maybe turning them back on during boss encounters, just like I do in SRW.

Kind of like realtime-with-pause, but you can see movements and trajectories a few seconds into the future. It's very very very jank but works well enough and is quite novel. I couldn't get super into it, not a fan of procedurally generated open-world "build your own squad" type games that everything in the west seems to be now.
