Throwbots as a name > Slizers

While the Mixel towball joint is now ubiquitous, Japanese builders long before its introduction favored the pneumatic T-piece bar connector as a useful joint for mecha builds. It is still used on occasion by some today.
>>
>>
All three of these builds are by the same fellow; this one uses a combination of modern mixel towball joints and T-piece bar joints.
This new captcha sure is annoying.

Throwbots had better lore and actual character names than Slizers.

Modern builders who utilize pneumatic T-bar piece joints have come to frequently use 1x2 rounded plates with pins or the 1x2 technic double axle plate for joints.

Some great (imo) SNOT work here while also keeping space for the minifig pilot, which is a hallmark of this guy's work alongside being 98% gray

No, all of the builds made in all-gray are I've posted ITT by a Japanese builder, DSK3.
https://x.com/DSK_3

He is quite prolific and excellent at what he does. He's made a shitton of minifig-rideable mecha, transforming mecha, all sorts of stuff.
>>
>>
I will say at the least, from personal experience, if you are patient, have good parts knowledge, and are willing to try, a shitton of Lego builds can be reverse-engineered by eyeball. Eventually in trying to achieve the shapes others made, you will achieve something relatively similar, and then that experience you can apply to builds of your own. The build itself is loaded with visual information as to how any given thing was achieved, and anything you can't see you can try to kludge into being visually accurate. If you try to reverse-engineer others' builds, I recommend you familiarize yourself with Bricklink and stud.io.

This build is quite old-fashioned in many ways but that doesn't detract from it in the least. I think a lot of modern Lego fans make a good point when they say that there's a bit too much SNOT in official sets.
>>

Same concept, different outcomes. A more modern build. I can't remember whether or not these two construction robot builds are by the same guy.

Specifically, the Bohrok bodies are entirely mechanical and nonsentient, piloted by their organic Krana brains. Some defeated Bohrok are rebuilt into Boxor mechs, piloted by Matoran. Turns out Bohrok bodies are made from a special group of Matoran, who get the random luck of "guess what, your destiny is to transform into a mindless maintenance robot that is usually kept in storage. Sucks to be you."
There's also the Exo-Toa suits, which can be worn or operate on their own.
The Rahkshi are biomechanical mechs. One Kraata slug gets turned into a large mindless suit, another crawls into its spine and controls it.

Mobile Frame Zero was already mentioned >>23688584 here.

Never really liked it myself since it seemed to boil down to like, two range systems and a spotting one would be the optimal build while the game would mostly be decided by deployment.

So much good stuff in this thread.
However. I'm not at all a fan of T piece hinge joints. I much prefer mixel joints. And I prefer powersuits over mecha.
>>
>>23689101
It's been twenty years, an updated Exo-Force with modern construction techniques would sell like crazy. Also, it's a damn shame Exo-Force came out right before Lego started doing shows, it could've easily rivaled or even supplanted Ninjago in popularity.
>>
Never got released because McCree was molesting his coworkers.
>>
>>23715783
that's interesting, anon do you have examples of mocs which use mixel joints i would love to see some.
>I prefer powersuits over mecha.
yea i definitely get what you mean anon they can be cooler sometimes
>>
>>23716850
NTA but mixel joints are extremely common nowadays, they're the towball joints that are now commonplace in sets across tons of current Lego sets and many many modern builds. Numerous examples ITT use them, even if they're mixed with other joint types. They're extremely ubiquitous and flexible, and it's a sweet bonus they're really an evolution of preexisting towball parts which'd been around with Lego for decades beforehand, even if those parts aren't usually as useful save for the little technic towball pins and axles.
>>
Humorously perhaps this specific example was, if I understand correctly, an entrant in a Japanese contest specifically meant to have its contestants use a premade inner frame which, of course, mostly uses mixel joints for articulation.
>>
I personally don't have a horse in the power suits vs. mecha race and think this falls under the VOTOM small mecha category, but eh.
>>
>>
>>
Aforementioned premade inner frame. If anyone is interested I can dump the instruction images to build this frame.

ninjago is basically a spiritual successor to exo force
>>
>>23718957
The nickname of sorts comes from the line they were first roughly introduced with en-masse, Mixels, at least if my memory serves me right. Their popularity and ubiquity is well earned and was, IIRC, pretty much immediate years back when they first appeared owing to their sheer flexibility. They're among the single most small but strong and reliable small joint parts one can get with modern Lego, and when used alongside the medley of other articulation and building methods and parts available they let you build a lot of cool stuff.

I saw a not-Rifleman and not-Flea on Temu. Wonder if these are "leading-brand compatible" or those weird 3/4-size bricks.
>>
>>23732461
Yeah, there is multiple designs, I'm phone posting but I did also see an urban mech and locust. The AliExpress ads state the bricks are compatible with lego, but some suppliers seem to have mediocre QC for sending all the parts. Never bought bricks on there but Aliexpress itself has great customer service so in case there is a complaint and the seller does not reply/cooperate you just get a refund. I don't have experience with temu and their policies/scam ads to watch out for.
