Those last couple seconds of evolution sequence with Tomorou throwing the Sapotama up to Gekomon who eats it, the animation doesn't seem to match the ArmaLizamon sequence. In fact, it looks like Naotoshi Shida animated it, and he animated Cougarmon > Murasamemon, so I'm guessing it's a tease of Gekkomon's evolution to Perfect. I wonder if that means the evolution sequence will go from Child > Perfect like a Warp Evolution.

How was Beatbreak's first episode of 2026?
>>
>>23695071
I would have preferred a more bat-like evolution for Chiropmon. 1 stage is too quick to lose all of its organic features
>>
>>23696087
More like a big prelude to what's coming next with the rival team.
Also good thing that the plot is moving forward and I liked the new ending.
>>23696346
I for once like this. Went Batman Beyond.
>>
>>23696087
Mostly exposition and setup, but it was fine.
For gag characters, I liked the bomber and his BomberNanimon a lot. Shame he didn't realize the friendship he had before resorting to suicide bombing. I'm kind of hoping they pop up again, since it seemed like they were conscripted instead of the typical arrest and seizure.
Liking the Five Stars more now, especially Kaito, but I'm not really sold on Tactics yet. You'd think with a name like that, they'd have a better strategy than "Let the low levels do all the work, then swipe the bounty".

Not a fan of the new ending though. The animation is great, but the song itself is so generically poppy it kind of ruins the mood.

And this >>23695087 is why; I don't really like humanoid/anthromons that much and my favorites are big animals and plants or fucked up constructs, which are mostly found in the Adult stage.

>Entire first cour is called the Glowing Dawn arc
>Second arc is being called the Tactics arc
Is this implying that the entire second cour is going to be about Tactics and Clay? It's Digimon so it could be going for anywhere between 48 and 68 episodes (or whatever the hell tri. and Xros Wars count as). It makes me wonder how pacing is going to be, because it's definitely been different to other Digimon series.
>Protagonist's Digimon only evolves to Adult in episode 12, long after everyone else has evolved to Adult, and it's treated as a narrative climax
>All the main characters except the protagonist have been familiar with Digimon for a while
>One of the main characters already has a Digimon that can evolve to Perfect since the beginning and is far stronger and more experienced than everyone else
>Female lead can already evolve her Digimon to Adult by the beginning of the first episode
>First arc takes place in what is a futuristic version of our world, giving bits of exposition over time, but rarely commits to answering any of the big questions that are raised early on (ie. Asuka's connection with Kyou and Glowing Dawn), and its episodes are more self-contained or tied to mini-arcs, with about seven individual narratives

I'm just wondering how all the other Five Stars are going to be paced, and if any of them are endgame material beyond Genjou
>>
>>23700051
>2nd arc
>5 stars infighting later
>lab shenanigans
>chairman reveals big bad plan
>glowies also reveal big bad plan
>most stars defect or antiheroes
>GD gets big new evos
>into 3rd arc
Most likely like that
>>
>>23700068
I don't think they're going to make big moves with the Five Stars until at least the third cour. Tactics obviously ranks below them, and this is their arc, and by the rules of children's anime, each of the Five Stars is going to have to be an opponent before they become allies. Kaito clearly has a moral compass, he's just also hotblooded and disappointed that his rival's gone soft. Clay and Rose don't seem unsalvageable, Honoka is going to be the wildcard, and Genjou has been established as the most sinister (SeitenGokuwmon seems like the standard Ultimate for him, but Shakamon seems like the major antagonist Ultimate).

For evolution pacing, I'm wondering if ArmaLizamon will get a cour-ending Perfect before Wolvermon and NightChiropmon, or if they're going to go the entire cour without introducing any new evolutions until the end. Not counting potential mode changes, non-permanent dark evolutions, or a new Glowing Dawn member introduced halfway in, there are only nine "new evolution" episodes to work with (ArmaLizamon > Perfect > Ultimate, NightChiropmon > Perfect > Ultimate, Wolvermon's Perfect > Ultimate, Murasamemon's Ultimate), and two of them have been used.

I also wonder if it's going to be Kyou who gets the dark evolution, like maybe Genjou destroys his sanctuary with a twisted "It's for the World Union, these Digimon should have been handed over for deleting" logic. He wouldn't be an e-Pulse battery anymore, so more power for fighting, and maybe it would be something that removes him from Glowing Dawn (either from shame over regressing or some Yu-Gi-Oh GX Hell Kaiser arc), depowering them a bit and potentially making room for a new member. I'm just wondering if Asuka will come back before the end.

To be fair, Tailmon in Adventure resembles a standard Child-level Digimon, and Angewomon always seemed like the female equivalent to the Adult-level Angemon and the two often appeared together with little to distinguish them in strength. In Adventure, holy Digimon like Angemon and demon Digimon like Devimon are inherently powerful, especially against each other, they're kind of like what the Dragon-type was in Pokémon. Angemon appearing was like a deus ex machina, even in name, which is why they had to wait 20+ episodes to bring him back when all the enemies were higher level. And HolyAngemon was the deus ex machina version of the deus ex machina right at the end, and despite being the same level as Angewomon, he's probably stronger than WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon. Unfortunately he has an overflow when he becomes Seraphimon and goes back to being less effective than Patamon.

But all of this is to say that Plotmon could have been removed and Tailmon and Angewomon could be moved down to Child and Adult before being introduced and nobody would have thought that it should have been differently.

Cougarmon and Murasamemon are a little bit weird, because Cougarmon looks above the standard Child level, but not quite an Adult because of its stubby proportions. It looks like it could be a cousin of Siesamon, or an evolution of some grey virus Labramon recolor like how Meicoomon evolves from Nyaromon/Plotmon recolors. In that regard, we seem to have established a precedent of cat and dog Adult-stage Digimon appearing weaker in terms of design than their stage indicates.
>>
>>23702437
>Unfortunately he has an overflow when he becomes Seraphimon and goes back to being less effective than Patamon.
And then we have Angewomon randomly evolving into a dragon which likewise jobs.

I approve of how Colon handled it - Seraphimon and Ophanimon are their Ultimate forms as heavily-armored angels, but they also *both* get sacred dragon forms which have been upgraded to kaiju-sized Super-Ultimates.
>>
>>23702437
And then we had the awkwardness of the 02 Armor Evolutions, where they had to come up with an excuse for why Tailmon would need to evolve into something that's only Champion-level strong.
>>
https://twitter.com/digimonweb_net/status/2009452566321725947
>>
>>23702458
Narratively speaking, Armor Evolutions aren't even quite at the level of Adult. They're used for the following purposes
>Because traditional evolution is blocked off by a Dark Tower
>Because they have some very specific utility (Fladramon's fire, Digmon's drills and digging, etc.)
>Because they're transportation (Lighdramon, Holsmon, Submarimon, Pegasmon, Nefertimon)
If these purposes aren't present and the only reason evolution is needed is to fight, traditional evolution to Adult is always prioritized. Part of the reason is so the story can introduce Jogress Evolution which becomes necessary going forward, but Armor Evolutions fall off hard.

Golden Digimentals are also hard to classify. Magnamon's opponents have been Chimairamon, a particularly powerful Perfect that it only just barely wins against, and the evil Cherubimon, which it needs to team up with the equally powerful golden Rapidmon to defeat, and even then it's not defeated through power, they mostly just get lucky. They're probably comparable to stronger Perfects/weaker Ultimates.
>>
>>23702437
>>23702450

>But all of this is to say that Plotmon could have been removed and Tailmon and Angewomon could be moved down to Child and Adult before being introduced and nobody would have thought that it should have been differently.

That seems like it was a legacy of the Digimon Pendulum Tailmon, Angewomon and Holydramon originally appeared in. They replaced Tortamon, Jyagamon and Herakle Kabuterimon in the "1.5" version of Nature Spirits which released a few months before Adventure premiered.

The Pendulums were a mess. There might be 1 or maybe 2 sensible paths on a pendulum but the rest of the digimon on them were random.
>>
>>23702829
Tailmon, Angewomon, and Holydramon (then classified as Perfect, being a branch evolution from Tailmon along with Angewomon) debuted the previous year in Digital Monster Ver. S - Digimon Tamers as one of that game's 14 new Digimon. Every v-pet up to that point (the game was finished between Ver. 4 and Ver. 5 but released after Ver. 5) had 14 different Digimon, so with Ver. S which had all of them until then in one game plus 14 new ones, that was 70 Digimon.

Anyway, the game also introduced Evilmon, LadyDevimon, and Minotaurmon as their "evil" counterparts (same evolution path), with LadyDevimon being the final boss' Digimon.
>>
>>23702850
I stand corrected on that. Still doesn't change that it is likely the result of the messy legacy of the original keychain and pendulums.

I suspect the reason the Ver. 5 digimon were not included is likely because it started out as a licensed Ver. Godzilla when Ver. S was in development. When Ver. Godzilla ended up cancelled and it was quickly adapted into Ver. 5 to fill the product void.

The vast majority of work that went into these later model v-pets was cosmetic. The original five v-pets are functionally identical outside of cosmetics.

It sees itself as
>BABY I
>BABY II
>CHILD-A / CHILD-B
>ADULT-A / ADULT-B / ADULT-C / ADULT-D / ADULT-E / ADULT-F / ADULT-G
>PERFECT-A / PERFECT-B / PERFECT-C
And it has the rules in place, like ADULT-G is the Digimon with the worst matchups (ie. Numemon in the original), and it evolves into PERFECT-C (the Digimon with the best matchups) if you manage to get an 80% win rate across 15+ fights. All the logic is identical across them, apart from one slightly altered evolution condition in Ver. 5, allowing for compatibility between all of them since it never shows the other model's Digimon on the screen. It just thinks you're fighting someone with ADULT-C.

So when the Pendulum series started, it had the closest thing to a program overhaul since the original Digital Monster, but it was still compatible with the original ones, but it was programmed in such a way that it would always have good matchups so as to encourage kids with the originals to upgrade to the Pendulums. But like the originals, every Pendulum is interchangeable outside of cosmetics like dot art. So they would just keep reskinning these things, but they released 11 Pendulums (1.0-5.0, 1.5-5.5, ZERO) with the X.5 ones just having a few new Digimon swapped in. The fact that Tailmon, Angewomon, and Holydramon are the only changes to 1.5 while not even requiring new artwork since they were designed for Ver. S really emphasizes just how recycled it all was.
>>
>>23703847
>The vast majority of work that went into these later model v-pets was cosmetic. The original five v-pets are functionally identical outside of cosmetics.

I understand that and that they are pretty much modified Tamagachi. When I mean messiness I mean things like evolution lines in the v-pets and pendulums not really existing as we know them now. If you look at the original 70 digimon designs (Ver. 1-4 + Ver. S), you can get a sense that the original plan might not have been the hodgepodge of digimon we got in each version and that the original plan might have been for each version to be more themed.

Back for more blogposting .

Finished Tri and Kizuna.
I liked both.

Tri is flawed. the slow pace was the worst thing about it.
Agumon new personality being "i'm le hungry all the time rofl xD" was cringe too.

I appreciate the story of the heroes getting older and having a real life to worry about beside fighting with Digimon.
The moments of Digimon spending time with their partners knowing it won't last were great.
it had many sad moments that genuinely made me emotional.
the fight scenes were all great.
and I actually appreciate the fact the heroes realized that they can't save everyone just because they are heroes, and had to go for a kill to save the world. much better than the stupid 02 where they kept crying "waaah we can't kill Digimon even though they reborn as eggs because.. we can't wwaaah"

It's not perfect, but I found Tri a good emotional ride, much better than 02.

just wanted to see more of Alphamon, as they forgot to finish its story.

8/10.
-------
as for Kizuna.. oh boy as much I heard it was shit, I expected to watch some disaster flop, but it was actually quite entertaining.
they fixed the pacing, the art style and Agumon's personality.
it felt like it's a good ending for Adventure's cast.
They even tried to re-do the Tapirmon woman from Tri with Menoa here.

biggest issue here is that the everyone except Taichi and Yamato were treated like background characters. their digimon didn't even fully evolve, just to give the spotlight to Omegamon, again.
those two fursona anthroshit new forms were ugly as shit btw. wish they used Omegamon Mercy mode again like in Tri.

the ending could be better. the last moments of Agumon and Gabumon hurt, but I just hated how they didn't show us the parting of the other teams.
Sora can go fuck herself btw

the personal cons aside, the story, the "detective work" vibe, and the emotional moments were all great.

8/10
>>
>>23704424
01: 8/10
02: 4/10
Tamers: 9/10
Tri: 8/10

now going for 02 Beginning. I didn't hear any positives, so I'm not expecting much, but I didn't like OG 02 to begin with, and I'm not excited to see the annoying 02 cast again, but eh.

anyway, what do I watch after this?
Savers, Xros or colon?
I wanted to watch Beatbreak, but It didn't feel like a digimon show

But in tri. they did think twice because it was that badly written.
>>
>>23704482
now because of Mei's feeling but at the end they realized Meicoomon had to die and she needs to accept the fate.
in 02, those wild Digimons were partners of no one, they only came to kill humans but the cast made a big deal for no reason.

heck, Apocalymon had a much great reason for his evil, because he wanted to be accepted and be happy like other digimon, yet the cast didn't have any problem obliterate him few seconds later because he's trying to kill people and digimon.
>>
>>23704483
>but at the end they realized Meicoomon had to die
So literally the start of the first film where Alphamon comes to kill it.

It's complete shit and I'm genuinely confused how you found it enjoyable.
>>
>>23704484
Meicoomon didn't become evil until the end of the 2nd movie
>>
>>23704424
Only Miyako and Iori had major gripes about actually being forced to kill Digimon, and it's fairly reasonable why considering their interactions have almost entirely been about saving Digimon from slavery under the Kaiser in the Digital World. The Adventure cast already understands from experience that killing may be the only option, something both Takeru and Hikari affirm to each other in 02 while understanding how Miyako and Iori feel. They're naive that everything might go their way, that evil Digimon might just back down, and they're forced to realize that isn't the case when fighting MarinDevimon and LadyDevimon who nearly kill a bunch of people before Shakkoumon and Silphymon are forced to kill them. I'm actually wondering if the dub handles everything differently, because I remember the music in Japanese during those scenes, and it's really sad and heartbreaking with a bit of optimism, like Miyako and Iori had their innocence crushed, and they're both on the verge of tears, but they now understand. The dub could have just used whatever silly Saban music was available after a fight and changed the dialogue.

As for the killing a partner thing, Taichi already dealt with that in 02 when Agumon was being controlled by the Digimon Kaiser. He tells Daisuke not to hesitate, that he knows Agumon wouldn't want to hurt others, and that it's okay to take him down. Daisuke is more torn up about it, because it's killing the Digimon and friend of the guy he looks up to. In the movie which takes place just after this is all resolved, Wallace is revealed to have the same problem, where one of his partner Digimon has lost control and he's been put in a hard place on how to resolve it. Daisuke cries for Wallace and what he must be feeling, but he says he'll be there for him to help.

Meanwhile, Meicoomon is one of the most annoying Digimon I've seen. It's practically not even a character, and Mei is shown to have mixed feelings in general. Why hesitate?
>>
>>23704424
>but I just hated how they didn't show us the parting of the other teams.
Taichi, Yamato, and Sora are the only ones confirmed to ever go through it. The reason they specifically do is because they have unhealthy relationships with their past and future and are denying parts of themselves as a result. They're lost in what they want to be. For example, Taichi enjoys his work stopping Digimon, but he also recognizes that he's a grown adult and that he has responsibilities going forward, especially in his later years of university. He sees his Digimon duties as a form of escapism and avoidance, but he doesn't feel much passion for what he's been pursuing in school (political science). He's moved out on his own, has his own small apartment and friend group (the novelization also adds that he doesn't go home often or talk as much with his family), and he hadn't even invited Agumon to his place before the movie. He has a life, but he's not living it, and he has this disconnect to Agumon as a result. Near the end of the movie
>Agumon (looking up at Taichi): "Taichi... you've grown up."
>Taichi (looking into the distance): "...and you haven't changed at all..."
There's this sadness in his voice because Taichi recognizes the distance, but Agumon is so proud of him and holds great admiration. Chika Sakamoto said that she read the line like a parent recognizing their child's growth with great pride.

Anyway, these three characters all take steps towards healthier futures so they can meet their Digimon again, with Taichi writing his thesis on the coexistence of humanity and Digimon and his experience with Agumon, which he writes in his thesis was "a part of him". Menoa was in a similar boat to them, but at a younger age. But the 02 characters all have healthy relationships with their past and their futures and take their Digimon everywhere, while you can try to look at Joe, Koshiro, and Mimi and guess.
>>
>>23704546
>But the 02 characters all have healthy relationships with their past and their futures and take their Digimon everywhere, while you can try to look at Joe, Koshiro, and Mimi and guess.
I'll still never understand why Kizuna did that, especially for the latter two.
>>
>>23704561
Koshiro and Tentomon are often together, even if Tentomon is mostly playing a support role and keeping him healthy while he hyperfocuses on a job. They may not physically participate in battles too much anymore, and Koshiro may not have Tentomon actively with him while he's leading a team of people like in the credits, but he's doing what he's passionate about and has no hesitation. On a similar note, Joe is in medical school and is working in a hospital. The short OVAs for Kizuna show that he doesn't have much time for Gomamon, especially with a girlfriend taking up what little free time he has. But Joe is doing what's been important to him since he was a kid, he isn't lost either, and that OVA shows that when Gomamon gets hurt for real, Joe will put everything aside to be there for him.

Mimi is a more interesting case because she's always doing entirely different things in every medium we see her. That's just indicative of the kind of person she is, there's nothing saying she has to be one thing forever. Palmon is often with her, but like Koshiro, it might not be to the same extent as the 02 kids, like Takeru who will bring Patamon to class with him. The original Adventure kids are like that, where they're friends, but they're not each other's primary friend group outside of maybe Taichi and Koshiro, and even then Taichi has separate school friends. They weren't typically the ones trying to handle everything in 02, playing supporting roles when they could to the 02 kids while living their own lives. The 02 kids make each other and their Digimon part of their everyday lives, the Digital World was literally their hobby instead of a place they were stuck in.

It's likely due to the writer, Akatsuki Yamatoya. She mostly did Sentai and superhero stuff before Kizuna and seems to have forced her ideas hard enough and with enough backing that Adventure series director Hiroyuki Kakudo quit the project.
>>
>>23704773

>>
>>23704789
No-one here is going to pretend 02 is anything but straight trash as well. Aside from the one slavishly devoted 02fag, but he doesn't count for obvious reasons.
>>
>>23704789
I like 02 but acknowledge its flaws, I think it has a lot of good and interesting ideas but is marred by poor questionable to utterly awful execution because it overall plays out like a series of rough drafts stapled together. Angewomon is featured in the opening, ending, movie, and Konaka episode? Well actually it's episode 27 and it turns out Tailmon can't evolve to Perfect because, uh, reasons we're coming up with right now. But Jogress is a cool idea that pushes the themes of the series by incorporating a v-pet mechanic.

In short, I think completely disregarding 02 is lame and shortsighted because there's a lot to discuss about it. With tri., I think it's just outright not good, though I've been meaning to give it a rewatch, but I still think it's worth talking about even if not for reasons I consider to be positive. I don't like how the Digimon are treated like an actual group of children that sit amongst themselves and chatter about trivial things while the kids are speaking about. It's not like they were deep characters in the original, but they brought out great character moments from their partners, and being able to contrast them like Daisuke compared to V-mon helps you understand them both better. I especially don't think Meiko or Meicoomon do anything to earn the amount of sympathy the narrative expects of us, especially after characters like Wallace. Meicoomon is an Adult level like Tailmon but acts the most childish and uncontrollable of everything. And when she kills Leomon, everyone focuses on it being Meicoomon being the one to do it, not the fact that Leomon was killed in the real world (ie. permanently), just to reference the meme. Meiko and Meicoomon feel like Poochie to me.

Kakudou went into detail on why he quit either in 2024 or 2025. Apparently it's solely because the characters weren't in the positions he imagined them to be in for 2010, he came up with a ton of background material detailing the years from 2003-2028 and how each character got to where they got (it's closer to what you see in Beyond). Kizuna is still going for the 02 epilogue, but it doesn't use the background setting stuff to fill the years in-between, so Kakudou left. It does, however, follow the background mechanics of how Digimon work and what they are in relation to people.
>>
>>23704864
>Apparently it's solely because the characters weren't in the positions he imagined them to be in for 2010
All this time I thought it was because of the senior partners losing their Digimon. That sounds petty as fuck.
>>
>>23704864
>It does, however, follow the background mechanics of how Digimon work and what they are in relation to people.

No, it doesn't. Loosing a partner by becoming an adult was a complete retcon that had nothing to do with the existing stories.

>>23704874
Considering that the incoming writer pretty much ignored the setting bible to tell the story she wanted to, I can't really see being upset by that as petty.
>>
>>23704874
Kakudou has always gone on about how much trouble he went to to incorporate media he wasn't involved with into Adventure. The first movie wasn't necessarily meant to be a pilot to the series, Bandai was considering having a Taichi for each medium (manga, TV anime, movies) around 1998. Kakudou decided to incorporate it into the series with the introduction of Hikari, though the Piccolomon episode with Taichi's vision of his younger self on the bike uses Bolero like the movie, the first overt reference.

But he's mentioned how Our War Game is responsible for all the people shipping Taichi and Sora when he wanted Sora to end up with Yamato from the beginning, so he had to add that scene in 02 where Taichi gives Sora the go-ahead to give her present to Yamato. Even though OWG has Miyako in a cameo with her friend watching the events, it takes until episode 14 for the series to acknowledge OWG happened, even though Miyako didn't know what a Digimon even was at the beginning of 02. Episode 14 of 02 is written to be cross promotion for the third movie, introducing the idea that there are more Chosen Children internationally by introducing the American Chosen Child Michael.

Kakudou also made the utterly insane decision to incorporate a couple scenes from the WonderSwan game Tag Tamers for Ken's backstory, and this gets really messy if you consider Anode/Cathode Tamer, Tag Tamers, D1 Tamers, and Brave Tamer as all in continuity with the anime (or rather the other way around). But Kakudou said he made no effort to try and incorporate material from the third movie into the series, it was just too much, and the fourth movie was practically impossible.

However, he has gone on record stating that just because an Adventure work doesn't have him working on it, it doesn't mean it's bad. After all, Mamoru Hosoda was essentially a guest director compared to Kakudou, and he made some of Adventure's greatest material (the first two movies and episode 21).
>>
>>23704903
They introduced a new mechanic to be the crux of the drama for the movie, but it's based upon the mechanics that existed beforehand where a Digimon is an extension of somebody's soul. The movie posits that if somebody is denying a fundamental part of themselves, that can manifest as their Digimon partner physically disappearing.
>>
>>23704903
>Considering that the incoming writer pretty much ignored the setting bible to tell the story she wanted to, I can't really see being upset by that as petty.

That is still a retcon inserted to force drama because the writer wanted to do a story about losing your powers by becoming an adult when 02 ended in a timeskip where that didn't happen. It reads like she had some leftover ideas from ToQger and decided to use them for digimon when she couldn't get permission for a ToQger sequel.
>>
>>23704979
>Losing your powers
But that's not what happened. The drama wasn't at all about Taichi and Yamato losing their ability to fight, it was about losing their friends as they got older because they were going down paths that didn't make them happy out of a misguided sense of it being the proper thing to do. Taichi is living day to day, each hardship (living meagerly, working at pachinko parlor) all for something he doesn't particularly care about. By the end, he's eagerly course-corrected into making his thesis about coexistence with Digimon and his relationship with Agumon because it's a path that combines his interests with being an adult.

To put it simply, it's not that growing up means you have to stop playing video games and become a wage slave and be miserable because that's what being an adult is, but you should focus your career path on making the games you love because that's what being a happy adult true to yourself is.

It is still a "losing your powers from going down the socially correct adult path" plot. The powers just happen to be in the form of a friend creature. The plot makes a lot more sense if it was originally intended to be used for a ToQger movie sequel as if it was an attempt by the writer to show up the writer who did the ToQger sequel film.

Also it turns out I misgendered Akatsuki Yamatoya for some reason.

>and I actually appreciate the fact the heroes realized that they can't save everyone just because they are heroes, and had to go for a kill to save the world.

This isn't necessarily directed at you, but I've seen this sentiment brought up multiple times, even by the director himself, and it always comes off as painfully tone deaf. It's a fact that gets hammered in time and again in the main series itself and didn't need reiteration. Is it somehow invalid simply because the Digimon had a chance to be revived after Apocalymon's defeat, or because it wasn't considered maudlin enough for adult sensibilities?

>>23705028
As much as I understand what the intention was, ultimately it's still comes off as the polar opposite since there's so much time spent on the tragedy of the situation, while the epiphany the leads to its resolution is mostly teased and handled off screen.
Not saying they needed to spell it out more clearly, just that it's a consequence of this kind of narrative.

It seems the harder one tries to analyze Kizuna, the more the positive aspects of the underlying message gets drowned out, and the cheap excuse to have a bittersweet ending while keeping 02's epilogue intact become unavoidable.
>>
Did people forget how Tamers also pulled an ending where all the protagonists parted with their digimon, then the sequel movie showed them fighting with the digimon normal as if the show's ending didn't happen? I know it's a sequel since Takatu evolved to Dukemon Crimson Mode.
>>
>>23705702
The movie didn't have Konaka's involvement unlike the first Tamers movie, and it was released in theaters before the TV anime had finished airing, between episode 46 and 47. Tamers is 51 episodes long and Dukemon: Crimson Mode only appeared for the first time in the TV anime in episode 50, so its anime debut in general was the movie. But even then, it had appeared in other merchandise about 3-4 months earlier like when they released the D-Ark Ultimate and included a Dukemon: Crimson Mode card with it.

Anyway, Adventure also ended with everyone being forced to say goodbye to their Digimon, and similarly, Our War Game was released several episodes before the series ended and depicted a hypothetical post-series future where the kids are able to meet their Digimon, though it doesn't treat it like some emotional reunion like the last episode of Adventure would have you believe. But for Tamers, Konaka has made material since that outright contradicts that the second movie happened with the sequel drama CDs Message in the Packet and Digimon Tamers 2018.
>>
>>23705943
>>23705702
That too, but the series also ends with Takato discovering the portal to the digital world still there at Guilmon's safehouse, so it's also kind of just implied they went to the digital world after and all reunited leading to the second movie. There's also a drama CD to bridge the gap.
>>
>>23706314
Message in the Packet takes place 1 year after the end of Tamers (which took place from 2001-2002), and they've sealed off the portal with concrete to prevent the digital field from expanding and causing more chaos since they wouldn't be able to stop rogue Digimon without Digimon of their own. They haven't seen their Digimon since the end of Tamers and want to send them audio recordings that they hope they'll find in the Digital World.

Digimon Tamers 2018 takes place a year after that in 2004, and then jumps forward 15 years when 13 year old Takato gets sent to the year 2018 because the world needs his help but his 28 year old self is missing after leaving to travel the world instead of waiting to see Guilmon again.

Digimon Tamers 2021 is a script reading and takes place 3 years after that, and while it has a bunch of plot updates, it's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek shitpost as they battle the manifestation of Political Correctness.

The second Tamers movie is just one of those Toei movies like for Dragon Ball Z where you're not supposed to think about where it fits in too hard, and even if it isn't canon, you can still enjoy it. The kids who were seeing it at the time wouldn't know how the series was going to end for another month, and probably wouldn't think too hard about it a month later. Konaka even praised the movie and what the writer was able to extrapolate from Ruki's character.
>>
>muh canon
Huge faggots, the lot of you
>>
>>23706402
You know it's been a loooooong time since I listened to Message in the Packet, but eh? Just because they sealed it with concrete doesn't mean they couldn't break it in the future, or that the Digimon couldn't find some way back on their own. Everything after has always felt kind of unnecessary. Movie 2 might be one of those "pseudo canon" movies, sure, but it can work as a post series story just fine ignoring the anniversary dramas (which again, largely feel unnecessary). It's just nicer to think they do reunite in the future, and Runaway Locomon is just one of their adventures that come after that.
>>
>>23706406
Why would it even matter what's canon or not canon unless you're making a timeline
Runaway Locomon didn't happen in the actual events of Tamers, but Digimon Tamers didn't actually happen in real life, it's fiction. It's still an official movie using the characters. Locomon, GrandLocomon, and Parasimon are still Digimon that exist and have since been used.
Tamers used Ryo and even gave him a father and brief backstory tied to Ruki, and Tamers is supposed to be "our world" where virtual pets, the card game, video games, anime, manga, merchandise, and all that exist for Digimon, so wouldn't Ryo be seen as a fictional character in-universe since he's from all the WonderSwan games? Does it really matter that much?

>>23706411
And you can watch Digimon Tamers just as a TV series. The only extended media I ever felt was truly necessary to complete its story was the first movie since the anime brings back Takato's cousin Kai near the end (probably as a reminder to watch the new movie). But even then, that movie played a bit fast and loose near the end with when it takes place and all the kids being able to evolve their Digimon to Perfect.
>>
>>23705702
The main difference, at least in my opinion, is with Tamers you have the option for two different endings depending on whether you stick to the animated continuity, or only the works Konaka was directly involved in (2018 notwithstanding).

With Adventure, you've got a series that already had a definitive ending being unearthed for the sake of midquels that while not invalidating said ending, throw in events that are reductive instead of adding anything to the story and ultimately muddy the characters and setting. You can take it or leave it, but it leaves its mark either way.
>>
>>23706418
To be fair with Adventure
>The original ending planned for Adventure got moved to become 02's epilogue, and it got a new ending
>02 wasn't planned in the plans until more than halfway into Adventure when it got greenlit, and there were a number of different story ideas for it, though a lonely genius Chosen Child being an antagonist was the core idea and springboard from which the rest grew
>Details related to 02's epilogue (ie. Yamato being an astronaut) were vestigial remnants of an early premise for a hypothetical Digimon Adventure 3, so even 02 wasn't designed around being a definitive end
>Kakudou wrote out a bunch of events that cover the 25 year timeskip to the epilogue as a way of explaining how things got to the way they are (ie. Taichi served as a "diplomatic ambassador" to the Digital World, or rather he was someone who helped resolved issues between the two worlds, and this kept him very busy, thus leading to him starting a family years after everyone else and having the youngest firstborn child, and 25 years was the first point where everyone could align their schedules and get together, and it was also the point at which everyone on earth would have a Digimon partner going by the exponential growth)
>Kakudou worked on Digimon Adventure Beyond, which is a glimpse of just a few of the countless events that occur during that 25 year timeskip

So I think that Digimon Adventure has always been in a state of being ready to accommodate additional adventures and stories. You could stop at Adventure episode 54 and be satisfied, or you could watch Our War Game, or 02, or Diablomon Strikes Back, or tri., or Kizuna, or The Beginning, or you could be a Kakudou purist and only up to the last episode of 02 and skip all the movies and watch Beyond. Maybe you want to listen to the drama CDs or play the PSP game or read his novelizations with the additional information.

Last blog post
Finished 02 Beginning.

Man this was actually terrible.
Did they really need to make a movie similar to Pokémon's Jirachi with even worse story?
The story is stupid and doesn't make any sense.
Every Degidestined happened because some random kid wanted friends who never saw or knew him?
Even though it was told in 01 and 02 that they were chosen because the digital world needed their help. This would also make the entire Gennai's backstory doesn't fit anywhere.
Also what is that stupid battle at the end? Just buzz around tentacles to "dude let's talk UwU.. The end!"

Man 02 and its media are all cursed, nothing but garbage.

Only good things I can think off are the animation, art style, and the fucked up memory segments. Could have been a good horror-themed episode, instead of a movie.

Now I finished Adventures saga and Tamers.
What do I watch? Savors, Xros or colon?

I last saw it in Japanese theaters when it came out so I don't have the best recollection, but I remember thinking it was absurdly funny that they got Megumi Ogata (the voice actress for Shinji Ikari from Evangelion) probably for the sole reason they can have a Shinji level breakdown for Lui. I don't think I had any issues with the movie on principle, Lui looks exactly like the type of character who would have this edgy story of child abuse. It's definitely a 02 movie, warts and all, but I enjoyed it, and I liked how CONFLICT RESOLUTION wasn't the standard "beat enemy until they're no longer a problem", having an actual talk over things reminded me of how BlackWarGreymon sincerely spoke with and listened to Agumon, V-mon, and Wormmon, and that was how he stopped being an antagonist, or how Iori's grandfather made an effort to try and befriend Oikawa over their mutual loss, and it would have worked if it wasn't for Vamdemon.

>>23707992
It's a weird movie with the music, dunno what they were going for, but I respect it a hell of a lot more than the follow-up of "REMEMBER OUR WAR GAME? REMEMBER OMEGAMON? IT'S OUR WAR GAME AGAIN, PLEASE LIKE US" without Mamoru Hosoda. The third movie had a ton of effort and talent put into it, Bandai and Toei were clearly trying their best, it was the length of the first two movies combined and it had so many animation directors. I respect the plot, about how you can't be stuck in the past forever, memories are just that and you have to move forward. I think about Kizuna and how it manages to incorporate all these ideas from both Adventure and 02, but go in different directions.

>>
>>23706553
I definitely misspoke in that regard. The major issue comes down to how deeply unbalanced the storytelling became. Adventure towards the end and 02 had those same problems, but there was a heart there that's clearly lacking with the later sequels.

Adventure isn't perfect, but there was a balance between the writing's emotional intelligence, the action-adventure aspects and esoteric elements that made even the messier parts work. With the sequels, especially tri, the intentions of the production are completely at odds with the final product's execution.
It's not just disregarding continuity or downplaying the toyetic elements, but the focus on emotional storytelling at the expense of the characterization and framework that made the series work and give the emotions proper weight. It's frankly insulting.

>>23707992
IIRC, the producer talked about wanting to give the movie a dream-like quality, so that probably has something to do with it.

>What was the point of the OG crew getting kidnapped?
Probably to give an even bigger excuse to keep them out of the action and tie into the aforementioned theme of nostalgia.

In the 2003 Digimon Chronicles story, Yggdrasil decides to wipe out 98% digimon due to overpopulation using the X-Program. A chosen 2% were moved to a new digital world before the program was activated. Of the 98% that were to be wiped out some were strong enough to resist the X-Program developing a counter X-Antibody program that granted immunity to the X-Program. This X-Antibody program would also beneficially mutate those who activated it to make them stronger.

Agumon X is a Agumon carrying the X-Antibody and mutated to be stronger.

>X-death virus was made to kill off weak mon by Yggy

Nah, it was designed to kill off all digimon infected with the X-program no matter how strong but some ended up surviving due to developing X-Antibodies. Project Arc was meant to be a variation on the flood story where god (Yggdrasil in this case) wipes out all mortals save a few due to overpopulation.

Personally I think Kizuna would have been vastly improved if it wasn't constrained by Taichi having to be a main character in the movie because he's the main character of the show, and had been a movie about Yamato and Sora instead where they're the two having this problem. I can buy the premise of Kizuna for the two of them, even if I still don't really like it, because they've always been miserable people and it's easy to see them as growing up into miserable adults. I don't buy it for Taichi, not even for Tri Taichi who has the worst case of character assassination out of anyone in Tri.

The other advantage of it being about Yamato and Sora would have been that it could have tried to sell me on them as a couple who like each other or would in any way make each other happy. Somehow in six movies of which two were devoted purely to shipping, Tri doesn't have any scenes where Yamato and Sora interact with one another.

>When Takahiro Kojima, Digimon Beatbreaker's character design, was asked about an order from Series Director Miyamoto that left a lasting impression on him, it was a request for Kyo to be "sexy". He had to ask "What even is sexy?".

>Originally, Kyo didn't have wavy hair, and his eyes were more slitted, giving a clear feelings about there being something more about him. But, that design didn't have the "sexiness" the director spoke about. Parts of this design ended as the base for a member from the 5 Stars [assumed to be Genjo]

>Kyo now has has hair that waves during battle scenes, allowing the viewers to see a glimpse of his neck. This is one of Kyo's Sexy Points. An older man that seems to have a hidden side, but is also sexy and you can't help but chase after him with your eyes. This is Kyo.

>And yet, Kyo has a very kind side we can see when he is petting Digimon, cooking for his family, and more. Incorporating this duality was a big challenge with Kyo's design. About his smile, it had to give the impression "something happened for him to smile like that".

>Also, originally Murasamemon had a more traditional Japanese design and Kyo initially was given a more traditional Japanese feel to match. But Murasamemon's design changed removing the traditional Japanese elements, and so Kyo's design also changed due to this.

He didn't appear in the 02 series itself because Kakudou had just given up by that point. However, he appears in quite a bit of later media. There's a drama CD that takes place 1 year later in the summer of 2003 where he meets up with Daisuke and Mimi in New York, and he says that Chocomon never came back (which seems to contradict the end of the movie when its egg is found)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWpJSimi25w

He also appears in Kizuna both as a name on Koushirou's screen of international Chosen Children, and at the end on a beach with Terriermon and Lopmon. I seem to remember him briefly appearing in The Beginning as well. He also appears in some of the WonderSwan games.

Speaking of WonderSwan games, I'm finally going to try them so I can speak from experience.

>First appears in Anode Tamer and Cathode Tamer, which takes place December 31st, 1999
>Next appears in some random country in Our War Game which takes place in March 2000
>But this contradicts the sequel game, Tag Tamers, which states that he was with Ken, watching the events of Our War Game
>He next cameos in episode 23 and 43 in Adventure in Ken's flashbacks that reference Tag Tamers
>But narratively speaking, his next appearance is in D-1 Tamer, and it ends with him time traveling
>Then comes Brave Tamer, where he ends up in the Digimon Tamers universe, and all these games featuring him interacting with anime characters like Taichi, Ken, Wallace, and Takato, while using their Digimon
>But he also starts appearing in the Digimon Tamers anime where he has a completely unrelated backstory
>But he ALSO appears in V-Tamer and meets V-Tamer Taichi
>Who himself has met anime Daisuke (who confuses him with anime Adventure Taichi), the Taichi from the 2020 Adventure: series, and Takuya from Frontier

For a character that was so prevalent from 1999-2002, he has almost NOTHING after apart from some mobile games.

>Have they been heavier on the "two opposite concept Ultimates Jogress to a super powerful Ultimate" thing lately?

They have seemed to be on a huge "union of opposites" kick since the 20th anniversary when they introduced GraveNovamon and RagnaLordmon.
>>
>>23710088
I guess it's a popular concept, because most of the time, people see them as Super Ultimates. Omegamon was seen by a lot of kids as one for the same reason, and Digimon like Chaosmon and its variants, or even Rafflesimon are essentially the same concept. Mastemon and Voltobautamon at least have the traditional Jogress idea where at least one Digimon is at a lower level and gets stronger, but when they do this "two Ultimates" thing, it automatically makes you think the result must be higher.

I think I still prefer it to "Whatever-mon: Whatever Mode". though, and I think I like it more conceptually than an Ultimate evolving into another Ultimate all on its own outside of maybe angels being corrupted, not that I mind having multiple Ultimates, I just think it's more interesting when they evolve into one through a lower evolution stage to emphasize that the evolution conditions changed.

Might as well get my thoughts in before the next ep:
- Gekkomon likes samurai movies? As if I could like him any more than I do. Wonder if this isn't just foreshadowing for later in the ep, but also his later evos too.
- Saw the talk about Tactics being named after minerals before, but it became really obvious when Raito introduced himself by his full name.
- Not too keen on Raito immediately resorting to villain tactics. I'm guessing specifically targeting brothers is a way to foreshadow his own issues, given he's meant to parallel Tomoro.
- Good to see Tomoro growing into that protective role, but it's disappointing the brother button had to be punched to bring it out.
- Surprised to see Ludomon not evolve. I guess he doesn't need to given the strength of his armor, but I wonder if it also means his and Granit's bond isn't that strong.
- Wasn't expecting Shakomon to evolve into Tylomon. New Digimon are great, but it's always fun to see older overlooked mon get attention.
- I know they needed to show the gap in power, but Pristimon and Chiropmon getting devolved from a love tap was awful.
- Gekko pulling off dual wielding and learning new moves on the fly is great.
- Happy to see that while the main cast still have a long way to go, Tactics isn't totally invincible at this point. Nice that Glowing Dawn got a decisive, hard fought win.
- Gigasmon getting his arms cut off? DAMN. Love Kyo/Murasamemon casually being hardcore again.
-Raito getting punched was really satisfying. Perfect cap to the episode, along with the brotther getting his e-Pulse back.
- Next episode: No, not the ex-con babies! The first Nirinso episode seemed like a comedy episode from the preview but was anything but, so I can only imagine with this preview's banter is hiding.

- I thought I was going to hate seeing the Kinoko Gang again, and I did. But you can't help but feel for them as well due to their circumstances.
-Seeing Reina and Pristimon's first big job was nice. Interesting to see how their roles were reversed at the start, or rather switched over time.
-Isn't Akatorimon flightless? Nice to see either way.
- Interesting to see an Owner can keep generating Digimon from a Sapotama as long as the right conditions are met.
- I really don't think the gang should have been able to hear Reina so clearly from that distance, but okay.
- RedVegimon once again proving that taking advice from talking plants is a terrible idea.
- It's easy to forget these Babies are basically ex-cons until they team up to shank RedVegimon.
- This whole incident feels like a very roundabout way to fix the shelter's staffing shortage, but I can't hate it. Lucky bastards.

Fun episode. Ironically the tone was a lot like I figured the first Nirinso episode was going to be. Good mix of comedy, tension and heartfelt moments. I can't even get mad at the slideshow portion of the fight.

>Is the mushroom a reference to the punching season, or combiners season?
I mean, Ludomon wasn't in either of those or even debuted during that time period. But his group, the Legend-Arms, was introduced during Xros Wars, so if you squint a little he could be a stand-in for that. Or the franchise as a whole since he was introduced for the 20th anniversary.

Well now I feel dumb. I keep forgetting the site has an English version now.

Funny, I noticed how unbalanced the amount of Mode Changes in the latest Pendulum Colors were, with a 3:1 ratio in favor of Saiyu Warriors. Amaterasumon having one wouldn't have balanced things out, but it would've been a little more equal. Though it clearly didn't make it in for some reason since it wasn't even teased before.

Pretty good. The show's really been on a great streak so far. I thought Granit's profile quote of "seeking a place to die" was comically dark when it was first released, but needless to say it's put into depressing context here. It wasn't a contest, but he definitely wins the depressing backstory award among Digimon users. Though watching the contrast between him and Reina and bonding rather quickly was nice too. Also wins the new award category of "doomed big sister relationship". The ending was a real subtle gutpunch in that regard, only slightly lessened by the mention of Tactics commandeering Moosemon's Owner's stash.

As an aside, it was nice seeing Tomoro so worried that he synced up with Gekkomon's complaints.

Two oneeshota episodes in a row, huh? I know some people are eating good now.
>>
>>23725283
>spoiler

>>
>>23725004
It makes perfect sense in context. Luka's survivor's guilt and suicidal tendencies are directly at odds with the intense protective desire that gave birth to Ludomon. Much like Tomoro and Gekkomon, Ludomon won't be able to evolve unless Luka can resolve those issues. It's fortunate that Ludomon's natural strength and Luka's Tactics training offsets that barrier in their relationship.
>>
>>23725283
Raito's insistence that he doesn't personally care about Granit and that he's only looking for him because he was ordered to conflicts with how unseriously he regards his orders from what I've seen. Signs he actually cares about Granit notwithstanding, the effect is to make him look like a tryhard.

Also, I saw someone point out that Granit's childhood friend was named Stella, and Reina's motif is stars on all of her and Pristimon's stuff.
Tactics team's debut implied that Granit would be Tomoro's counterpart and Raito Reina's, funny if they did that as a fake out.

What’s appmon’s omnimon? Never seen it
>>
>>23728948
In 02, Omegamon is used to explain the concept of Jogress (incorrectly, mind you, as Jogress requires at least one of the utilized Digimon to evolve to a higher stage, and Omegamon is at the same stage as its components) when it happens between XV-mon and Stingmon to create Paildramon. Paildramon evolves into Imperialdramon: Dragon Mode, and then into the more humanoid Fighter Mode, before the second 02 movie (heavily featuring Omegamon) gives it an Omegamon power-up with Paladin Mode.

In Tamers, Guilmon is the way it is because Takato wanted it to be stronger than Agumon, it's literally "My Agumon OC donut steel". The evolution stages roughly correspond to (in concept) to Agumon's from Adventure, with MegaloGrowmon = MetalGreymon being the most obvious, but Dukemon's design is very clearly based on Omegamon with a medieval knight motif.

In Frontier, Takuya's and Kouji's respective spirit lines take inspiration from the Greymon and Garurumon lines without being too overt visually. Susanoomon is the Omegamon idea of the last, strongest form being created through combining (Omegamon, Imperialdramon, Dukemon: Crimson Mode). Other than that, Frontier goes a bit farther with the Royal Knights lore before it's actual lore for Dynasmon and LordKnightmon, at the most they're enemies that the viewer is supposed to compare to Omegamon and other protagonist Digimon in strength.
>>
>>23729572
Yeah man, you didnt have to sperg out an explanation when its plainly obvious.

Punching digimon season has shinegreymon, xros has omnishoutmon with all digimen, dunno what appmon has and we’ll see for the current season
>>
>>23729769
Savers has an Agumon/Greymon line and the "rival" lead has a wolf line that fills the Gabumon/Garurumon role, but I wouldn't say that ShineGreymon feels particularly like WarGreymon outside of being a Greymon-species, though Agumon/GeoGreymon/RizeGreymon all feel like updated versions of their respective stages. Similarly, I don't think KaiserGreymon feels anything like WarGreymon outside of being a Greymon-species and following similar narrative/pacing beats.

Burst Mode never felt like an Omegamon equivalent either. And the Gammamon line was its own thing too. The Adult stages reminded me more of V-mon's Armor stages, while the overall design was a dragon/dinosaur/reptile like the vast majority of protagonist Digimon. It's (usually) white because that's a color they hadn't gone with, like how Agumon is yellow/orange, V-mon is blue, Guilmon is red, and now Gekkomon is green (with some purple).
>>
>>23729302
looks like a yugioh monster
>>
>>23729820
>Burst Mode never felt like an Omegamon equivalent either. And the Gammamon line was its own thing too.
Siriusmon wore a cape and kind of did the "sword arm and gun arm" thing, but letting it transform each arm between the two

Also if you told me it was originally designed as a CanoWeissmon/GulusGammamon Jogress then I'd believe you.
>>
>>23729990
The thing is that Gammamon line's primary trait is having a light path and a dark path that eventually converge. While the popularity of two Ultimates fusing together to become a so-called Super Ultimate was popular all the way back to Omegamon, the way Bandai has been doing it feels like a divergence from Omegamon. With Omegamon, you have direct inspirations like each version of Chaosmon, all the Omegamon alts, Abbadomon Core, etc. Meanwhile something like Proximamon feels closer to GraceNovamon, ExMaquinamon, and other modern "super hyper we made this truly ultimate form" Digimon.

Depressing. I kind of figured how it was going to end even before Makoto fucked up and gave his full name, but the comedy and character development were good misdirection. Really great gags too. I wasn't expecting Burgamon to show up and be a total gremlin. And holy shit, Burpmon being a serious threat despite being joke character. Shame how things took a turn, but it was nice to see they were spared at least.

Another sad reminder of the contrast between those who try to overcome their circumstances, and those who let their circumstances consume them despite working hard to rise above them.

Also that "mysterious Owner" in the preview is a total fed, right? I mean, despite elaborating on Owners who choose to go on the run rather than become a Cleaner or give up their partners, it can't be that straight forward. Also Commandramon may have camouflage, but he glows.
>>
>>23734493
>Another sad reminder of the contrast between those who try to overcome their circumstances, and those who let their circumstances consume them despite working hard to rise above them.
Good comparison. Not to mention Hotaruko's accusation of Makoto's post Shangri-La life being a complete fabrication, while she's outright lying to her family about her circumstances and refusing to tell them the truth.

Makoto going back to clean up the mess Burgamon left while Hotaruko has swanned off to Shangri-La to meet up with the rest of Tactics Team Seven, only to be told by her mother to look after a girl who now despises him is an absolute fucking gut punch of an ending and I am really looking forward to how it gets resolved.

Why not include V-mon and XV-mon if the Gammamon line is going to be included? They also have sharp pointy noses. But that's because they're designed after V-dramon/AeroV-dramon, who you could say are conceptually something like a super secret Agumon evolution in a different way to Greymon.

The point is that in the original v-pet, Tyranomon was the standard evolution to Agumon, it's just a big red Agumon, but Greymon was the better alternative evolution. It had the hardened head with horns which could be used offensively. This three horn motif is even used on Omegamon, it's visually striking and more of an indicator of a powerful heroic Digimon. The vast majority of main character Digimon are reptilian like dinosaurs. Gammamon is basically a triceratops, and I think of one way before I think "This is WarGreymon".
