Of all the Hoko Kuwashima voiced characters, Flay and Natarle were both the most fixable. Hell Natarle was a good ship Captain outside of a minor blunder when she was focusing on resupplies instead of attacking GENESIS immediately in SEED. I love Flay and think she is the best character in seed and is one of the best Gundam characters in general. I also love the drama around her character, she totally makes the first half of seed way more enjoyable and it noticeably falls off a bit when she stops being in the focus, I really think it's a writing blunder that they didn't continue her storyline more closely. In an alternate timeline she should of been the Strike Rouge pilot(would have been funny to reveal after everything she is a decent pilot as well) and survived to be Kira's main girl. There is something about seed where Kira is the only one who can fight and keep everyone alive for a lot of it that makes sense that he'd come back to a hot redhead to make love to. I watched the remastered version so I'm not sure the original version had that, but most of the shipping between Kira and Lacus happens in the opening and endings. However, the desperation Kira feels to protect her is what allows him to progressively become a better pilot when the Archangel reaches Earth and even then, before the duel with Athrun he finally stops her advances, realizing that kind of relationship is not right

he then "dies" and Flay is confused because her feelings grew to actually love Kira even if she does not realize it yet

Her kidnapping in Alaska was a turn for the worse as the series stopped focusing on her but you know Kira truly loved her, in a way he would never care for Lacus (a pairing that was super forced).

Remember how desperate he was to recover the pod she was in when Raw sent her with the Freedom and Justice's specs to Azrael. The druggies kick Kira's ass, the Freedom is almost wrecked and even Athrun mentions he never saw Kira that sloppy and desperate (the fact the guy who almost killed him in a gruesome battle says that adds even more perspective).

Then they killed her off in Raw's murdering spree so yeah, I felt cheated. GSD may have been a bit better had she lived, probably being the one who would oppose the most to Kira returning to the battlefield, and him having to actually develop a personal conviction rather than being Lacus' attack dog

I doubt Kira would have gotten back with Flay even if she had survived. He has way better chemistry and rapport with Lacus from the start, while Flay and Kira's relationship was built entirely on a lie, and her desire to deliberately get him killed in action.
But, if Flay survived, she might have gone into politics though, and been a much-needed sympathetic Alliance character later on.

I liked her when she was a bitch but the way they shipped her off then killed her before really giving her any closure was really stupid. Her "ghost" acting like it had no baggage or issues really made it seem like it wasn't actually a ghost and was just Kira coping.

Idk anon, even when he was with Lacus he still thought about Flay and was trying to get back with her. He was comfortable to take advantage of Lacus' kindness but his end goal was always to circle back to Flay eventually, it just worked out that she got blown up before he ever could. The show itself seems to suggest that they wouldn't have ended up back together in the end as well with the Flay ghost iirc as well. Alas, she died though
